The Occidental Caribe hotel has garnered mixed reviews, with the property's prime location being a highlight for its easy beach access. However, guests have called out the value proposition as lacking, particularly when it comes to premium upgrades. While the cleanliness of the common areas often receives praise, service delays and room maintenance issues are a concern. Service quality has been frequently criticized, and noise levels from parties and music have affected the peacefulness of some guests' stays. Amenities like pools and beaches are appreciated, but room amenities fall short for many.

It’s a good property on a great location with an amazing beach. There’s something for everyone, from kids to grandmas :)

Pros:
Great amenities with lots of opportunities for fun ✅
Good food with lots of abundance. You can snack on stuff until late. We got food one night at like 2am ✅
Tons of activities and entertainment including nightly shows ✅
Friendly staff ✅
AMAZING beach ✅
Super fun pool ✅

Cons:
Internet - this is an ALL inclusive resort that doesn’t include unlimited internet. They don’t even offer it in lobby or common areas. It’s an especially big deal for us because we work remotely and we weren’t exclusively on vacation. We had to pay $45 for a week’s worth of service - expensive!! I pay that a month back home AND it only works on one device. Have a laptop or laptop? Sorry! Either pay another fee or disconnect, wait 15 min and try on new device. Device dropped all the time too. That sucked. 🚫
Outdated, MOLDY rooms. I get this is an older property but an entire side of the hotel has an intense mold issue. They’ll switch you and maybe you’ll get an ok room on the other side (I went to a couple and they were musty but I have a severe mold sensitivity and can’t risk it). Our final room was fine but we heard from several people about the mold and musty smell 🚫
Dingy gym with broken, rusty
machines and really dirty - functional but could improve 🚫
Cockroach. Not in the room but outside right by our neighbors door. Enie Minnie miney mo which room it went into. I put a towel snugly on the floor by the door gap every night 🚫
Toilet was a 2 or 3 flusher, even after they came to fix it 🚫

This is an older resort owned by the Spanish chain that probably was very good at the time it was built. It needs a lot of improvements, but it would significantly improve its image if the staff would greet guests & each other with a SMILE. TThe food is sub-par at best, the buffet served the same thing every night, chicken, pork, beef, & pasta. And if you are a vegetarian/vegan, then good luck or I should say out of luck. I saw whole wheat bread on two days of our one week stay. Their specialty restaurants serve the same type of food, Beef, Chicken, & pasta & one choice of appetizer & desert. The rooms are tiny, more like European hotel sizes. There were no hand/body creams & the shower amenities were in the dispensers similar to a gym shower. And the gym equipment was easily over 50, yes fifty years old. It is even clearly visible the hotel pictures. It would cost them less than 30K to update their entire gym, very sad. The best thing about this resort is their beach, and they are luckily situated in an area that does not get any seaweeds. All the neighboring resorts beaches had a lot of seaweeds. As a whole, I WOULD NOT recommend this resort to anyone I care about, and it was superbly disappointing. You can get a much better resort for the same price. Enjoy.

My wife and I just spent 5 days here and had a great time. The grounds and the pools are beautiful and the beach is sublime. The staff was attentive and if you tip a few $$ for housekeeping and the bartenders your experience will be even better. Yes it's true the rooms are a little tired and could use some TLC in the areas such as fit and finish but it didn't distract us from have a great time. For some reason the tequila is pretty much useless as a drink but order rum and I guarantee you will feel that. There are plenty of food options and the main buffet changes daily however I will readily admit that aside from the Ala carte Japanese and Italian restaurants we found most of the food offerings to be a bit on the bland side. The sea bass in the buffet was an exception and it was excellent. Read up on Dominican cooking and you will discover they aren't like typical Caribbean islands and don't use much spice and even shy away from pepper so perhaps that's the reason. Either was we still had a great time. Taxi's into town will run you $40 roundtrip and honestly there is nothing there worth going to. Just hang out at the resort, eat, drink and work on your tan.
PS, the swim up bar is a great place to hang out, meet people and just enjoy life.

I think that this is possibly the worst hotel that I have ever been at. Every single day of our four nights that we stayed, we had to call for extra towels and call multiple times in that regard. One day our room was not made, and I called the desk 5 times over 5 hours, and ultimately was told that it could not be made. The staff member said that even though the cleaning staff would be unable to clean due to the time, he would send new towels and sheets. Even that request was ignored. Even when the room was cleaned there was still sand left on the tile floor.

Bar staff were rude, and repeatedly spoke insults in spanish to customers who they believed could not understand them.

Food had no labels as to what it included, making the resort very unfriendly to vegetarians.

Their ‘open room mini-bar’ consisted of a not very cold fridge filled with 2 sodas, a juice, and 2 beers that we asked to be filled because it was not ready when we came in.

Hot tub was not hot whatsoever and the water was plain unsanitary.

Restaurants were not open as advertised. Two days in a row we went to the pizza place for lunch and were informed that it was closed and given no reason to the contrary.

The water sports place, did not loan out the free boogie boards to 'water conditions' however both the neighboring resorts were renting out the boogie boards. Despite the perceived 'bad water conditions' paid attractions were still available.

I would not recommend. I am usually not an unkind person and am empathetic of mistakes. However Occidental Caribe repeatedly made mistakes and showed little kindness or effort to correct them.

Pros: Great Resort location, beach was breath taking!! food was decent, drinks were good. Resort is old but they keep it clean. fresh fruit and deserts were amazing. we stayed in building 6 and cleaning lady Carolina was amazing, she always went out of her way to help us cleaning/desinfecting our room since my husband and son fell ill. Also her supervisor Nancy was really helpful too. When my family got sick, the night time costumer service Pablo Salas went over and beyond to get a 24hr pharmacy to bring us the necessary meds we needed it ( Thank you) Daily soups were great.

Cons: Daytime front desk personal lacked on costumer service, they were a bit rude and insensitive when asked for help or changing wifi password due to continuously being down or not working properly. Buffet cooks are a bit slow making the meat, no waitress to bring drinks to the table. Food was salty at times.

Sarah B wrote a review Mar 2022
We had an interesting experience at this resort to say the least. The moment we arrived, they told us our room wasn’t ready and we could only get it if we paid an additional $20. Then, we tried to make reservations at the restaurants with guest services but were told that every single restaurant was booked for the next few days, and we couldn’t make these reservations in advance! My friend has severe allergies which limits her food options and guest services actually made fun of her and laughed at her instead of trying to be accommodating. So, we made our way to the buffet to find chicken that was undercooked and pasta that was made in a very unsanitary fashion (they were mixing meat sauces with other sauces which is not conducive for people with allergies or who are vegetarian). Because the hotel was so hot, I then wanted bottled water but didn’t expect for it to be so difficult to find it. It is not easily accessible, and you have to hunt down someone at the resort to give you water. Then, my room’s toilet did not flush and was constantly clogged and no one fixed it the entire duration of my stay. Also, our shower had very little pressure and was mostly cold water. My friend’s toilet and shower didn’t work and they had a leak in the bedroom. Their locks were also broken which is a huge safety concern.

Now, onto a specific anecdote about the food. Because the buffet was unsanitary, we would go to the pizzeria for lunch. My friend and I showed up at 4:30 pm with no line, yet we waited over an hour for our pizza to come out. The pizza maker was not wearing gloves while touching all the toppings and licking a lollipop which I find incredibly unsanitary while you are making food for other people. Then, we asked the staff (specifically the head of the pizzeria) if our food was almost ready after we had waited over a half of an hour, and he said “Don’t worry, your pizza is in the oven.” However, there were no pizzas cooking in the oven at this time, and we felt lied to.

Lastly, when we were checking out, the front desk told us if I didn’t give back my towel card, I would have to pay an additional $20 fee. First off, this seems excessive for a towel card. Secondly, upon checking in, they didn’t give me and my 3 other roommates 4 total towel cards, so I would essentially be paying for nothing. The towel card system within itself is flawed. It’s ridiculous that I would be expected to only have one towel at a time when I am going to the beach and then taking a shower after.

All in all, I do not recommend staying here. Right down the beach is the Hard Rock which looks a lot more pleasant.

My family and I visited this resort and we were very excited. Upon arrival, the front desk gave us a very warm welcome with some drinks, luggage service, and information about the hotel. Our rooms were okay; a beautiful view but minimal towels, horrible shower, and room service was not free. My bed was made everyday and very comfortable but my pillow cases and sheets were never changed (makeup stains, stayed 5 nights). The beach and pool were beautiful. At the pool they had minimal entertainment and no one to come around and collect empty plates and cups. You have to get up every time you want a drink and leave your belongings unattended. The bars only have one or two people working and that caused a long wait for even a water. All of the mixed drinks were extremely watered down and the beer cups are very small. I couldn't even get a buzz going after drinking alcohol all day. The beach chairs every morning were covered in sand and the life guard paid no attention to anyone in the ocean. Our food experience was absolutely horrible, small portions and not many choices. Buffet was not good at all, and we had breakfast there everyday and dinner there one night, not good any day. The restaurants had the tiniest plates with the same buffet food, horrible. Although, i will say the hibachi restaurant was very good, we enjoyed that. We did an excursion at la hacienda, which was okay. The staff at the hotel told us it was a half hour away and it was really over an hour. The staff overall were very nice, always smiling and saying hello, not very good with service though. Everyone who works here is veryy pushy for money, it was extremely uncomfortable to be hounded everyday to buy this and that. Make sure you bring cash because the ATM gives pesos and charges a 10$ fee to use. The nightly shows and casino were alright, not the best. Overall, I am a frequent traveler and I am not picky or high maintenance. The Dominican Republic has many gorgeous views but I will not be returning as the people here made me very uncomfortable. Thanks for reading, i hope this helps future travelers.

The resort itself is beautiful, with amazing pools and the beach was the most gorgeous I’ve ever been on. The staff was very friendly and accommodating for the most part. Upon arrival our room had a leaking ceiling in the bathroom and a shower that wouldn’t drain, so the front desk gave us a new oceanfront room within 5 minutes and were very helpful with the switch. The resort is very loud, which being there for spring break wasn’t too much of a problem for us but the doors are very thin and you can hear every conversation word for word throughout the whole night which frequently woke us up. Even in the early mornings the maids would be outside our door speaking very loudly to each other and waking us up. The food was honestly not good at all, especially at the buffet, and it is very hard to get reservations at the restaurants. My whole friend group was struggling to eat all week and definitely would have lost some weight if it wasn’t for the drinks, which were very good and easily accessible to get frequently being that there are so many bars. It is hard to come across bath towels, toilet paper, and bottled water so we would have to find a maid in the hallway and ask her for some off her cart, which was a bit inconvenient. Overall it was a good trip at a beautiful resort which was perfect for a spring break trip and if it wasn’t for the food, I would probably stay there again in the future.

reservation made for 5 (2 adults,3 Kids) room requested "Family Room".

when we arrived at the hotel non of the staff speak English and we had to wait over 40 min just to get to the counter when we were informed that the room is not ready (so far OK) at around 5 PM (arrived at 2 PM) i went to the front desk to get my room and they said the Family Room is not available that night they will give us another room (sleeps 4) and move us to the Family Room Tomorrow.

The next day we have been asked to wait till after 3PM for others to check out and rooms to be cleaned ..... 6PM we are shown to another room that sleeps 4.

i asked to talk to a manager at this point and was waited for 1h for one to show up. the "manager " informed me that the ROOM manager is not available that day and will be back in the AM. once again 5 ppl in a 3 ppl room. the next morning the "room manage" asked that we wait till after 3Pm for a room. at this point, lost faith in the hotel and its management checked out and moved to a different hotel.

Keynotes:
1) no matter what time of day always a line to talk to staff.
2) staff do NO speak English and keep saying Yes yes and send you all offer the place with.
3) 90% of the hotel has NO A/C (only the rooms).
4) rooms are dated and beds are extremely soft and worn out.
5) they charge for beach towels if not returned.
6) "upgradeded from" is smaller than the "Family Room"

bottom line if you plan trip and you don't speak the nativ language this hotel should be avoided !

the good: several other hotels in the area and the beaches are amazing.

the bad: we let the staff know on several occasions that the bathroom did not flush (they fixed twice and then the bathroom leaked all over the floor {this point we checked out})
The safe in the rooms are broken
the doors to the porch don't lock (the first floor- anyone can walk in from the outside)

minimal umbrellas to protect from the sun at the pools and beach.

indoor play areas (for kids) always closed {COVID-19 is the reason we got.

we checked out early and the hotel management refused to refund us, the only option they gave us future credit for another stay ?!?! as if
