WOW! My husband and I snuck away to the Riu Jaliso for a 5 night getaway. We had a great week. We feel relaxed and refreshed.

Service / Staff: The staff here is super friendly and accommodating. Every staff member greats you when they walk by. They are very professional and speak very good English. The bar tenders were very friendly everywhere. The restaurant staff was great. Excellent service all around!!!

Room: We splurged and got a Jacuzzi suite. We had room 6198. Top floor and a great view. It is a far walk from the elevator which didn't bother us. Often we took the stairs which were near by when heading to the pool and beach. We were on the 6th floor, so if you have a hard time walking distances or using stairs then this might not be the best choice for you. The room was clean, and spacious. The view was beautiful. Great to watch the sunset! There is a general mildew smell in the room. I have noticed this other places we have stayed that are humid and tropical. I brought a diffuser and freshened up the room when we arrived. It was not terrible, but not ideal. There is a private 2 person spa tub on the large balcony. Very relaxing! The room was big with a king bed, tv, sitting area with couch and chair. There was a large bathroom with dual sinks, a shower and a small toilet room. I recommend this room, as it is a corner room with lots of light. The 6th floor balcony has clear glass instead of stucco so you can relax seated on the patio or in the jacuzzi and still enjoy the view without standing. Note the ice maker on the 6th floor was broken.

Property: Overall the property is nice. There is a fountain in the main courtyard which is pretty. Not super useful other than for photos; I imagine on a busy day guests would wish it was a pool. Very lush and green. Immaculate gardening. Tropical Spanish vibe. The 2 pools were both clean and not over crowded most of week we were there. By Friday things started picking up and the pool bar was a little crowded. The property is laid out well with 3 restaurants and the 24 cantina in back near the lobby. The lunch restaurant and steak house are beyond the pools, on the beach. This makes it great for lunch near the beach with a view. There are bars all over the property so you can grab a drink almost anywhere you are.

Cleanliness: Extremely clean! Everywhere you go someone is cleaning. The first night there, I noticed a girl cleaning a trash can outside. They really seem to take pride in the appearance of the property. It was "Disneyland" clean. People walking around cleaning up trash even on the beach. Our room was cleaned well each day.

Food: Food service is available much of the day and is all inclusive. There is not poolside or beach food service. You have to go to the lunch restaurant or hamburger stand near the beach and pools. I like this better, there isn't food and trash everywhere. It seems more sanitary.

Breakfast:
The breakfast buffet is great. They have something for everyone. The full buffet stops service at 10:30 but they leave the continental breakfast up til 12:00. Made to order omelettes are always my "go to" item at a breakfast buffet. Lots of fresh fruit, and usual breakfast food. The chilequiles were awesome! Erika was our server most of the week. She was very friendly and helpful. The coffee isn't very good. You may want to bring your own Starbucks via packets.

Lunch:
Lunch is served at Botanas which is down near the sand. The view is great. Lunch is "average" buffet food. Tacos, hamburgers, salads. What you typically expect at a lunch buffet. They have pallella, fish and salads. Nothing very impressive about lunch except for the view of the beach. Don't leave your food unattended the birds will dive in and take it.

Dinner :
Main buffet- The main buffet is really good! No reservation required. Great variety of fresh food. Make sure you get a Spanish coffee from Caleb it is great! They serve a good variety of food but the Mexican was the best. A different type of ceviche each night we were here.

The other 4 restaurants require reservations to be made 2 days in advance. They offer Mexican, Italian, Asian and Steakhouse. We only tried the steakhouse and the Mexican.

Steakhouse - The steakhouse is average. The best part was the view. Book the first seating if possible so you can watch the sunset.

Mexican - The Mexican place was very yummy. Buffet appetizers and dessert. The main course is served at the table. We love Mexican food so this was a must try for us.

Activities:
There is a cabana down near the beach that offers a 50 minutes Swedish massage for $100 usd a couple. That's a great deal for a breezy ocean massage. Mary and Angeles did a great job on our massages. Perfect amount of pressure. Very relaxing! We went 2 days because it was so awesome! The cabana is near the pool, so you can hear some of the pool activities over the loudspeaker, we still enjoyed the massage even with the noise.

There are Hobie Cats, boogie boards and kayaks down beyond the pool on the north side of the beach. They are free to check out. Scuba Caribe can give you lessons on the Hobie Cat for $40 usd, or we chose just a 30 min ride with a staff member for $20 usd for a couple. We went out with Andres twice, he was very friendly and we had a great ride.

You can rent a Sea Doo for $50 usd for a 30 min ride. Very quick and easy, but you need cash. There is a ATM at the lobby that gives you pesos, there is a fee so bring cash with you if you can. If you rent the Sea Doo go out earlier in the day. We saw dolphins, literally 2 feet from our Sea Doo the first day we went out.

You can go parasailing right off the beach for $60 usd. They take off right from the sand, and land you right back where you take off. It was a very smooth ride. This is only going when the wind is just right. Usually from 1:00 - 3:00 in the afternoon.

There is typical cruise like entertainment each night. Not really my thing, but it seemed to be very popular. I think my kids would love it. Sort of telemundo game show humor. Lots of games and activities at the pool area.

Beverages: No Coca Cola! It's an only Pepsi property! Mini bar and liquor bar is stocked in the room. Bars everywhere. The swim up bar is great.

Smoking: We are from California where hardly anyone smokes. So we are very sensitive to cigarette smoke. There is smoking everywhere on the property. Not just designated areas.

Checkout: We had an evening flight, so we chose to pay for a late check out so we could hang at the property then have a shower before we leave. It was $900 pesos for a late check out.

Overall we had a blast. It was nice to get away as a couple. We would like to bring our kids back next

I was surprized when I read some of the reviews and we almost didn't book because of their negativity, but I am so glad we didn't listen to them. The bus was right there waiting for us when we got off the flight, no stopping at other resorts either! bonus. We arrived and they had a hosted with rum punch poured and ready to serve to us. bonus. On the bus, they had us fill out the forms to speed up the check in process. Check in was literally 2 min! We went to our room and had a little problem with resetting the safe, but no big deal, they came within a few minutes to reset. Love having the bottles of water and liquor dispenser in the room. Lovely animals made from towels on the bed greeted us. It was noisy! We were on the 3rd floor facing the lovely fountain but the guests were hooting and hollering and slamming doors, but not much staff can do about that. I can't imagine a nicer buffet. It had everything one could want. We have been to other resorts and you don't find the selection of fish, Mexican food or ice cream bar (complete with chocolate fondue) anywhere else. I loved the Spanish coffee cart that came around at night. The shows (especially the Michael Jackson tribute) were amazing. I loved watching movies on the beach. We loved the $20 full body massages on the beach! Heaven. The spa offered massages for $100. If you go to the beach and go left, they charged $40 but go towards Bucharius and they have several lovely tents set up and offer $20 or 200 pesos for a treat you soon won't forget. We loved the walk to Bucharius. We felt safe and it was nice to see the town. We ate lunch sometimes at the Rui Palace (the sales people didn't mention this but its true. You can eat there for lunch and use their pool or work out room), so that gave us a little change. All in all, I can't imagine anything better and will definitely be back to the Rui Jailisco.

Our family (2 adults and 3 teens) stayed at the Riu Jalisco from August 1st-10th.

Some of the concerns posted by other travelers have merit, but he majority do not. Overall, I was very satisfied and recommend this hotel as very good for the price.

CLIENTELE: I estimate that guests were 50% American, 30% Mexican, 10% UK and 10% Canadian with a sprinkling from Asia or non-UK Europe. Contrary to what we read before going, we found the Mexican guests to be exceptionally respectful to others. There was, however, a small but exceedingly obnoxious group of American 20-somethings that caused extreme trouble in the adult pool. In the US, some of them would surely have been arrested for disorderly conduct for attempting to start fights with other guests (not associated with them) by pouring beer on them, insulting them, splashing them deliberately, and even dunking one of them from behind. Security at the hotel was apparently unwilling to address this behavior unless full-scale combat broke out.

ROOMS: Were were intitially given rooms on the first floor on the outside of the hotel. The rooms were dark and right along the most heavily traveled service path. We balked and went to the front desk to ask for a switch. The woman who handled our request seemed put out and wanted to know the reason. I firmly cited the issues of security and noise. There were 10 minutes of whispered discussions among various staff members accompanied by headshaking and scowls. We were then informed that they had two adjoining rooms on the fourth floor, but that we would have to wait an hour for them to be readied. An hour and a half later, we had two very nice rooms with a great view! Yes, the beds are very firm, and the pillows are thin. There was some mustiness, but it was mild. The source appeared to be faint mildew in some areas of the tile floor grout. This is inevitable in an older hotel in an area of very high humidity with guests constantly spilling various drinks (mildew food!) in their rooms. We have seen the same problem in several other highly-rated beachfront hotels in other Mexican resort towns. If you can't handle it, book a brand new (and more expensive) hotel.

SERVICE: Overall, the service at this hotel is quite good. We tipped occasionally, but literally never saw another guest do so even once during our stay. The employees generally worked extremely hard nonetheless!

However, forget calling the front desk, as they simply do not answer. When you actually go to the desk, do not wait for them to ask what you need if they seem busy, as you will be ignored. If you are assertive (but not disrespectful) the staff there is actually pretty helpful! The hotel should definitely fire the few who are not.

Housekeeping was excellent. They did a superb job on both of our rooms, and we even had a different towel-animal on the bed every day. We tipped one dollar per day for each room, so that may have been a factor. As a test, we left five dollars in the nightstand drawer for our entire stay, and it was never touched.

Food service was very good. At most meals plates were whisked away as soon as they were emptied and drinks were enthusiastically refilled. We did not tip any servers until near the end of our stay. We then tipped the ones who were best. We ate at each of the five restaurants multiple times (and reservations were easy to come by for the two that required them). I am baffled as to how anyone could fault the variety and huge amount of food available! The food quality is generally very good. The only restaurant that is not buffet-style is the Nayarit (Brazilian). Our family liked the Dona Adelita and Don Emiliano the best, as they had the most variety.

Bartenders without exception were among the hardest workers we saw. I never waited more than a minute for a drink! The mixed drinks were usually weak, though their strength did increase with tipping. If getting drunk quickly is your main goal, you could simply guzzle the free booze (vodka, rum, gin and tequila) provided in your four in-room dispenser bottles, with or the free sodas, tonic and Coronas in your fridge! Otherwise, the bar service is more than adequate. Given the drunken behavior of some of my fellow Americans, I can see why the bartenders keep the drinks on the light side.

The staff worked ceaselessly to pick up after guests who took their drinks and food everywhere and left empty plates and cups in every conceivable location. Sometimes they were unable to keep up completely. The hotel should really establish a few clearly marked areas where guests are encouraged to place their empties!

FACILITIES: This hotel shows some signs of age, but he grounds overall are beautiful and meticulously maintained. Small areas of the tile in the huge pools are missing, and there is blackening of the grout. Short of closing the pool for several weeks there is no way to remedy this. There are innumerable lounge chairs available, though some guests try to monopolize these by placing one article on each of ten chairs and then disappearing for hours. The pools were closed at 8:00 (much too early!) and this was our biggest disappontment.

Boogie boards, kayaks and snorkeling gear were easily available at most times of the day. We did not do any parasailing or jet skiing (extra cost) but lots of other guests did. Shuffle board, ping-pong, volleyball, air-riflery, soccer (futbol), aerobics and numerous contsts/competitions at the pool were all clearly announced and there was always something to do. We did not use the Gym, Spa or fee-only internet service.

Our family is active and not easily bored: we spent a lot of our time in the ocean. The water is murky simply because of the sediment from the four nearby river outlets. There are a lot of fish in the water, and they occasionally bumped us due to low visibility. Fishermen were seen hauling nets bursting with fish out of the surf both morning and evening.

ENTERTAINMENT: We went to only one show at night. It was good considering the fact that players were not professionals, but rather hotel staff. We saw them practicing their shows every afternoon, so they were obviously trying hard. If you want shows, go to Vegas!

The Animation Team put out a lot of energy in the pool area firing up the guests for various activities. This especially appealed to guests from the older teens to the thirites in age.

We did go to the disco once. It had lots of smoke, annoying music and seemed to draw mostly from the minority of guests who could not hold their alcohol. Not pretty.

EXCURSIONS: We did the canopy tour and the horseback riding tour. We loved both, and strongly recommend them! Had we known that these were actually worth their cost we would have tried other exursions earlier in our trip!

we went with two other families, the service was great, the beds were hard. The hallways carry every sound, especially the party go-ers going back to their room late at night. Our room was facing the courtyard, so we had the sounds of the entertainment until at least 11 each night. The beach was nice however there was no shade unless you rented an umbrella. there were a few vendors but none were too pushy. They had a nice hut off to the side that sold trinkets and offered hair braiding for much less then the spa, which was nice. The kids were able to borrow boogie boards as well. The a la cartes were wonderful, the lunch buffets were not very good. The one by the beach had birds eating off the buffet, kinda disturbing. I would go back, but ask for a different room, perhaps floor level away from the stage. Free wi-fi in the lobby was nice, but only works for lap tops and iPads, not phones. No NHL!!! That was a tough one, but we made do.
The sports bar is inside the building, my previous experience was with one as a stand alone which was nice, you could see the people walking past.
