I'm giving this a resort a wicked rating for many reasons.

Check in was smooth - We were only in line for about 15 minutes, checked in and headed up to our room. Bell boy was there with our luggage within 10 minutes.
Room was spacious and comfortable - & Thank god for the AC! Beds were quite firm(Not a huge deal, we barely spent time in the room anyways!) The in-room liquor dispensers were absolutely awesome! And the fridge always had a couple beers, pops, and waters - They were replenished daily by maid service.
The grounds are absolutely immaculate and their staff are constantly cleaning, sweeping and making sure they stay immaculate.
The food is great and a ton of variety. We ate at the buffet most of the time and we also had a couple a-la-carte dinners. One thing that absolutely stood out with this resort is that the a-la-carte restaurants are unlimited dining and no reservation needed. Obviously show up 5 minutes early so your not stuck in line, but we never had an issue getting a table. We dined at the steakhouse multiple times, and food was great. Can't really complain when your getting unlimited a-la-carte meals.... I haven't been to a resort that offered this yet.
Pool was good, spacious and clean. One thing that could definitely be improved is making it an adult pool(As there is a pool bar) and a children's pool not far from it - And keeping it open a little later than 8PM. We went in June and it's still suuuuuper hot at 8PM.
Beach was superb - Super clean and nice sand. Water is not crystal clear so if your expecting Caribbean water, you are mistaken - It is Puerto Vallarta, not Cancun.
But still clean and most definitely swimmable.
Another elevator on the other side of the building would be a huge improvement as well, Wasn't fun walking all the way back to the lobby wasted going up to the 6th floor :P !!! Though I will say the resort is small enough that everywhere is quite accessible. Nice short walk to the beach.
Huge shout out to LEO!!!! Kind gentlemen that runs the nightclub, he took care of me and my hubby the whole week we were there, no questions asked!!
Met so many wicked people and had an absolute blast!
Don't listen to the bad reviews because people are honestly just nit picking. This resort is a ridiculously good value for your money, and if you don't have a great vacation, then you must have a stick up your butt!
We can't wait to come back!!

My boyfriend (37) and me (28) stayed at the Riu Jalisco from 14th – 28th August. This was our first long-haul holiday and our first time all inclusive.

Our room was on the 6th floor and had views of the ocean, fountain and gardens. I was expecting a bit more of a luxurious room to be honest but it was fine – 2 queen sized beds pushed together, air-con, TV, mini bar. Great housekeeping service – rooms cleaned daily and new towels every day.

Food – we thought the food was very good. We tried everything including seafood and didn’t suffer with tummy upsets at all. We went to the Oriental restaurant 2 nights, first night was good, other visit was not so good – they were running out of some of the dishes so we had a limited choice. (The fried ice cream at the Oriental was lovely!). The food at the Brazilian was good as well (we went to this one once) although we felt very rushed, the courses came out really quickly and there was no choice whatsoever on the menu – everyone got the same. We only went to the steak restaurant once – on our last night, I was gutted that we hadn’t been before as the food was fab and it was lovely to eat overlooking the beach & ocean. Had I known how nice this restaurant was, I’m sure we would have eaten there loads more. Breakfast & lunch at the hotel were good, loads of choice. Alcoholic drinks were quite weak but as other reviews mention, if you ask for more alcohol you always get it. Leo the bartender at the pool was brill!

Beach/sea – nothing special in my opinion, the sand isn’t white and water isn’t clear and blue. This was the biggest disappointment of the holiday for me but to be honest it’s our fault in a way because we didn’t research the pacific coast enough and rushed into the booking. There were always loads of sun loungers at the pool & beach. Watersports – my boyfriend used the catamarans but he had to have a lesson costing US$25 before they’d let him on the water, although this was probably a good thing, this charge isn’t mentioned in the brochure. Another thing that isn’t mentioned is the fact that you can only have the boats and kayaks for an hour (per room) per day. We paid US$50 for half an hour on a jet ski one day and I would recommend this.

Location - US$18 taxi ride (each way) to/from Puerto Vallarta. Trashy touristy part with American-diner type places & souvenir shops and then a nicer Mexican part with lovely Mexican restaurants on the beach. Why you would go all that way to sit in somewhere not Mexican is beyond me but I suppose that’s what some people like. I felt a bit isolated an the hotel so I enjoyed our 2 trips into Puerto Vallarta and would recommend going at least once.

Evening entertainment at the hotel in my opinion was TERRIBLE!!! It was cringe-worthy miming and dancing, you would have seen better in Butlins. We went to the ‘nightclub’ once, fab Spanish and Mexican music but a bit of a dump to be honest! You had to be very drunk and/or desperate for a dance to enjoy it in there.

We hardly tipped at all (some people did though) we didn’t feel under pressure to tip and still received excellent service.

Overall, we had a nice time but I wouldn’t go back to this hotel or to this area, if you have booked a holiday here don’t panic, you will have a good time. If you haven’t yet booked, I personally feel that there are probably nicer places to go when spending that kind of money. If we go long-haul again we will be heading to somewhere with blue water, white sands and closer to or in a resort. We would also consider choosing somewhere that is adults only to avoid the hoards of kids (we have to go during school hols as we’re teachers).

My girlfriend and I stayed at Riu Jalisco for a week. Overall we'd probably go again, but we found ourselves watching movies in our room instead of watching the entertainment they showed at night. The food was good, plenty of variety and all decently fresh, the food areas were kept decently clean. I'd suggest going to the smaller buffet across from the main one when it's open. Cleaner, colder AC, less busy. There was only one night, Thursday, where the buffet was super busy to the point of walking around waiting for a table to clear - probably all the new arrivals.

The pool is nice, not very deep, but pretty clean when we were there. Zero shade until the late evening - they close the pool at 8PM. I would have preferred later. The ocean was rough at times, but the beach was clean, plenty of chairs, and the vendors were a very minor annoyance at worst - they don't push at all, just say "no thanks" and they'll move along.

As for the entertainment, they played movies on two nights. One had no signage and we just happened to stumble on it, the second had signs advertising it. They played Lucy and American Sniper. The shows were loud and obnoxious, but not that exciting from what we saw. The nightclub was uncomfortably loud, louder that you would expect from a club.

Things must get pretty crazy past 2AM when we'd sleep though, as a couple nights we would get a random phonecall at 4-5AM. I answered once, and heard blaring music and someone asking for somebody. We also had someone knock on our door around 4AM once. Unplugged the phone, and had no issues after that.

Overall, yeah, I'd go again, it was relaxing, everything was near our suite and we had no outstanding issues.

The free wifi is mediocre, it might reach your room, but it will drop often. We paid for 7 days of wifi, which was useful but dropped extremely frequently. We had better reception on the beach than we had in our room.

Taxi to Bucerias is about 85 pesos. The Plaza Lago Real about 100 pesos. The Malecon about 230 pesos.

My caveat is that I've travel throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. I've stayed in some real dives - but I knew they were dives going in and those dives did not pretend to be anything other than a dive.

This resort is barely a 3 star - probably a 2 star depending of the day. I''ll start with the bad.

1. Cleanliness. I honestly felt like I needed to be disinfected when I checked out. The cleaning staff did the bare minimum for this place not to be condemned. The public washrooms were disgusting and more than once I had to walk out and go back to my room to use the washroom. The toilets were NEVER flushed and you often found human solid waste ALL OVER the stall. Your room was cleaned with a wet rag and no actual cleaning supplies. Our linen was stained when we checked in and never changed - despite tipping our maid. Our shower didn't drain at first until we complained. The linen in the buffets and "a la cartes" were dirty all the time. And the walls in high traffic areas were dark and black from grubby hand prints. I'm very glad I had all my shots because the pool water was always cloudy because local kids would spill their drinks in the water and generally use the pool areas as their personal living room and washroom. Cups and straws littered the water and the area around the pools.

2. The new "renos". What new renos? The place already looked like it needed new paint and new furniture. The walls hadn't been washed in years (so it looked like) and the furniture was chipped or broken even in the reno'd areas. The plastic cushioned seats were stained black. And the colours? Purple? It looked hideous. On our last day - the glass ceiling in the lobby started to leak.

3. The locals. The resort was at least 75% Mexicans. Had I know I could have demanded to be moved to another resort, I would have done so on day 1. The Mexicans own the place. Their grubby kids are running everywhere - butting in front of you in line, spilling drinks in the pool. The locals went swimming in the pools in their full day clothing. No bathing suits - jeans and shirts. And the men walked around with their shirts lifted and their guts hanging out. The women wore too tight shorts. It was disgusting to look at. They didn't care how many people were in the elevator - they always found room for one more. They were loud the entire trip - yelling and screaming like hillbilly trash at a chicken fight.

4. Hotel staff. The bartenders really try their best (Leo was great) - but when its super busy (which is any time outside of 4pm - 8pm because the locals are on siesta), the bartenders serve them first. This is confusing to me because we are paying the regular price and we are the ones who will tip (btw, tipping does not get you any better service). The Customer Service rep was obnoxious and rude. The entertainment staff spoke almost exclusively in Spanish when on the stage - which meant the tourists really didn't understand what was going on (I still don't know how I was suppose to vote during the Karaoke).

5. Food. The food was bland and the same every single day. The buffet was a nightmare because the locals were running around grabbing food like it was their last meal. The locals didn't really attend the "a la cartes" - but the "a la cartes" aren't "a la cartes". More like hybrid "a la carte" - buffets. While I didn't get sick (I had taken Dukoral before I left), many in our wedding group did get sick after the Asian restaurant.

6. The sports bar. It only has dedicated sport channels - which meant it didn't have any NHL playoffs. That was sort of sad for us, but I guess not really the resorts fault. They don't have food 24 hours a day - just nachos and cold hotdogs (you grab it from the fridge and put it in the microwave). It is air conditioned tho - which is nice cause no where else is.

7. The nightclub. Its tiny. It smells. And no one goes. Except sleazy Mexican men.

8. Room amenities. The beds are hard and covered with a plastic mattress pad. I've never seen this in a 5 star resort before. It must be because they are use to their patrons doing things on the bed that will stain it. Linens never changed. No clock in the room. The hairdryer was from 1985. It was dirty and if you tried to put it on high, it started to smoke. Bring your own. No moisturizer. There was a hybrid shampoo/conditioner/bodywash in the shower, but thats it. Whatever it was, it left an awful film on your hair and if you had long hair, you spent the next hour trying to get the knots out.

Now for the very little good.

1. The ocean and beach. Sure, its not the Caribbean. But when I'm grasping to find the good in the place, the ocean stands out. Its so warm. It rivals the waters off the coast of Africa and Indonesia. We spent some time almost every day in the ocean. The beach is fine. Sandy beach with plenty of chairs.

2. The pool chairs. First AI I've been to where you could get a seat at any time during the day.

3. The area. The PV area is beautiful. The Bay is pretty and I will go back to the area, for sure.

Otherwise, the airline was fine (Sunwing) and the rep was ok. Our excursion with Vallarta Adventures (Outdoor Excursion) was a lot of run and good value for the money.

Couldn't wait to check out. Hated the resort and would never, ever go back. Unfortunately, this resort has ruined the Riu name for me. Anyone who thinks this is anything better than a 3 star is clearly use to crap vacation experiences.
