Riu Jaslico during October has an excellent promotion for locals, and they take advance of the promotions. Would not book in October for Jaslico. That should be noted on Riu and in our case Sunwing’s website as we were trying to decide between Jaslico and Vallarta

Riu Jalisco food was ok, lots of variety buffet, three restaurants Mexican, Italian, and Steakhouse. We ate the buffet most night or picked up burgers and hot dogs from the sports bar. Typical vacation drinks were meaning frozen drinks, beer and wine, and rum, vodka, tequila, etc. No pool service this time but have had it in April. Maybe due to all the locals.

We were upgraded to the family suite which was convenient, but I would not pay extra for it. It had two separate rooms. ( not as clean as other family or regular rooms) One room had two signal beds, and the other had an older pullout couch. The king bed was in the middle of the room. It did have two bathrooms with showers which are nice for larger families. The towel was scratchy, older, not the ones I am used to and have received in past trips.

Entertainment was ok. We only made it a couple of shows. Again some were good, and some were very noisy and hard to understand what they are saying as the spoke Spanish most of the time due to the number of locals vs. non locals

Visited Riu Vallarta. Slightly small resort than Riu Jaslico. Riu Vallarta had more British and Canadians. Typical vacation drinks are meaning frozen drinks, beer, and wine, Rum, vodka, tequila, etc. Vallarta had poolside service which was nice instead of waiting in bar lineups

. What was supposed to be a relaxing and peaceful time for us was nothing but stress and frustration! The only thing that was nice about our stay was the beach and the flight home!. I am disappointed to the point of tears First,( of a long list!), our original room smelled horrible. I know that it is humid down there but the musty smell was overwhelming. They agreed to move us to a room they knew wasn't as smelly..their words not mine. Actually they moved us to a family suite which was probably a huge mistake on our part! When we got to that room which we were told was ready for us, there were no bedspreads on the beds and there wasn't any for 3 days of being in that room. We fortunately found a blanket in the closet we could use. No wash cloths for the same amount of days. We were surprised when we finally got them, we had assumed this hotel didn't have any. No water or alcohol in the dispenser or the mini bar. The air conditioning didn't work so they sent up maintenance to check it out and the men made me very uncomfortable with their conversations, say something in spanish then look my way! . The snacks in the snack bar were disgusting. I had a sandwich the day we left and the bread was hard, the chips stale and the fruit tasted "funny"

The food was repetitive but ok at the buffets. It was ridiculous that I had to get up at 8 am and stand in line to get a reservation for dinner at either restaurant! ..sorry I am there to get some sleep, which didn't happen! If children weren't screaming down the halls with their unresponsive parents to go stand in line for reservations or breakfast it was the drunks coming out of the night club screaming and carrying on in the hallways! I could always tell what time it was by the noise in the hallways. The only time it seemed our room was quiet was from about 12-1:30am and from about 3-8am. We complained to our Apple representative and he assured us it would quiet down by mid week, again not the case. Our beds smelled of urine and pillows/beds were hard as rocks..at one point the back of my head WENT NUMB while watching a movie in bed!

When I saw the pics of this resort I did notice they had a childs pool, 2 of them as I saw on the grounds, and an adult pool with swim up bar, so my relaxing time by the pool would still be intact. I had all I wanted on a vacation a nice beach and a swim up bar. It is a shame that I never got to sit at that swim up bar because of all the CHILDREN 10 AND UNDER SITTING at the bar. The adult pool was OVERRUN WITH KIDS and their floats!!!!!!!! The straw that broke my back was when 2 boys sat down on the stools in front of us,where we were just going to sit, and the bartender coming over and SERVING this child before us!!!!! I had been told by a couple we had met our first night in that the bartenders tended to serve the locals over the tourists but this was ridiculous! They had a beautiful pool just for them I don't uderstand why they didnt use it! So when I complained again to the Apple rep he assured me we weren't the only ones complaining about the situation but then followed with "I talked to the manager and he is going to send the security guard over to the pool to get them out", but then he added " that will never happen" and he was right. I am sorry but that is completely unacceptable in my book! You have many guests complaining about a situation and nothing is done about it because it is the LOCALS who are guilty of this! This resort did just that it catered to the locals with their entertainment and actions in restaurants and bars. If I heard "I don't know" or "no" one more time I was going to scream. I asked for bottled water at nearly every bar in the resort and it wasn't until my LAST day I was told I could get one at the front desk. I could go on and on about paying for lessons to windsurf which was marketed on their website as free, the venders on the beach coming up to you every 15 mins even if your eyes were closed and calling senorita senorita silver, hat, tattoo? This just wasn't what we expected from a vacation and a "luxury" resort. The grounds were beautiful and the main areas were very clean but their customer service was not worthy of their 5 apple status in my book. I also wanted to inform everyone that this resort has day pass rates available along with their room rates which would explain the high rate of children at this resort. I probably would of had more peace and quiet at Disney, and I am not kidding at one point I swear there was about 50 kids in the pool. I have to say it is awesome to swim in a pool with straws, fruit, and God knows what else floating in the pool. There was even a pile of FECES on the sidewalk by the Adult pool, I am going to assume it "fell out" of the swimsuit! I work too hard for my money and free time to have it just wasted like it was. I was sad to leave not because of the usual my vacation in over blues but was mourning the vacation that never was. I don't complain often, not a fan of it, but if I can spare someone the waste of time and money we had my complaining is worth it!

Based on previous reviews, we weren’t sure what to expect based on the wide array of reviews. Here is our take

There is free wifi in the rooms, it worked well with our four devices and there was no extra costs, even got wifi at the beach which was nice

Family of four, we got the family suite, the one with a king bed and two bunk beds. Pay attention to booking your room style as there are three types of family rooms, the one we got, another that is two double beds pushed together with a double pull out, and we did not see the third family room.

Our family room was good, lots of space for our family. Rooms were clean and the west and tear wasn’t too bad. Only thing was the drapes that had some burn holes, but otherwise about par for a 4 star resort for room amenities and cleanliness. Mini fridge stocked well and when requested. In room bar with four liqour bottles. Not much issue with the rooms at all

The Resort

The resort is nice and not too big. It has a bunch of different bars and aside from the two main pool bars sometimes having a decent line, the bartenders were quick and friendly.

There are only three pool areas which are on the smallish side. One main pool with the bars, one kids themed smaller pool and then a dedicated kids pool area. Pools were a bit busy but we usually had room to relax.

The beach was amazing! Lots and lots of chairs, never an issue finding chairs at the beach, even shaded when wanted. There was a small beach buffet which was nice for snacks. Vendors respect the line and don’t really come up into the chairs and do not push when you say no. Beach also had some
Neat vendors selling mangos, shrimps and coconuts drinks.

Hacienda on the beach was basic, but had some trinkets.

Beach was clean and lots of swimmable and walkable areas. ZERO SEAWEED which is a nice change from the east coast.

Entertainment was great! Always something going on, white party and karaoke were really good! Kids had fun at all the entertainment we saw.

Now… the food…

Don’t know where to start, if you are a foody, this resort is not for you.

The highlights were the Asian and Italian restaurants where the food was pretty good, but not great. Had a better selection and some good flavours.

The other restaurants, the buffet, Mexican restaurant and the steak restaurant were barely worth going. Food was bland, flavourless and the exact same every single day.

It was surprisingly amazingly hard to find tortilla shells or taco shells…

The dishes, oh the dishes, usually dirty, crusted with food or stained. Really had to double check what we ate or drank out of at the restaurants.

The Asian and Italian restaurants seemed to be a bit better in this regard, but not much.

Never had to wait for a table and all restaurants are first come first serve, no reservations needed. All restaurants are buffets tho, but the Italian did have some plated dishes to order on top of the buffet. We just looped the different restaurants at each meal eating a bit at each and ending with ice cream from the Buffett.

Overall, the resort is a solid three star, maybe 3.5, and if they could up the food game and cleanliness of the food facilities and dishes, this resort could easily be four plus stars.

Would we go back? Probably not, but for a family trip after a long travel hiatus, it was adequate and we had fun and made memories, but the food will always be a drag on this one…. This is not to fault the resort or the staff, but due to location of resort and the food.

This was our first stay at a RIU property and we were very pleased. We usually stay at smaller resorts, 500 rooms or less, but in PVR it seems everything in our price range was a big resort. The resort was very busy, often the buffet restaurants would be very crowded and the noise was overwhelming at times, but the food was always really good and we found the tables outside were quieter and more relaxing. The pool was always busy and we had to go early to get chairs, they were 8 in our group. But it was fun to people watch. The beach was amazing, the sand was soft, no sea weed! And the ocean was warm and the waves were fun to play in. There were always plenty of chairs for us on the beach. We had a good time interacting with the vendors, they aren’t pushy at all, and sitting on a lounger on the beach with a cocktail and shopping is pretty much paradise! The beach bars were great, you didn’t have to go far to get what you want. We also loved the activities at the resort, always something going on to entertain us. The evening shows were also great, even the cheesy ones! Our room was mediocre, we had the family suite. The beds were way too hard for me so I slept on the single cot all week. The noise coming from the hallway at all hours of the night was terrible though. But I had earplugs so that usually solved the problem. We also loved the location, close to Bucerias and the airport. We were happy with the holiday and would definitely stay at a RIU again. However we would either try to go at a slower time, or choose one of the higher level RIU properties; we just didn’t like how busy it was.

Overall, our vaction at the Riu Jalisco was fantastic. Our family of 4 really didn't feel like there was too much more we could ask for but there were a few things that keep me from rating this resort higher.

First, our room wasn't ready when we arrived at check in time. Not a huge deal but really started to feel like we were getting the runaround after numerous attempts to get in. Gaby at the front desk recognized this and took it upon herself to go above and beyond and found us when our room was ready.

The only other complaint we have is the steakhouse, La Botana. The steak is horrible, don't order it unless you want to go for a second dinner at the buffet. All other dishes were good here but the place is really understaffed and not managed well. It's a shame because this place should be the shining star of the resort with it's beach location.

Now the positives.

We stayed in room 4132 which is a 3 bedroom family suite with a back of stage/tree/ocean view. Our room was big, clean and the balcony was a great place to enjoy a late afternoon drink to watch the sunset. Easy walk down the stairs to be right between the main buffet or the beach.

The beach was clean, plenty of chairs available and the ocean was like playing in a non-stop wave pool. The kids (8 & 17) loved the boogie boards and the quick walk to the daily ice cream cones. We didn't spend too much time in the pools. My son really enjoyed the waterslides when we went to that one. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves with the entertainment in the other pool.

Overall, the food was really good. The options were great and we never felt like it was boring or repetative. We only ate dinner at the main buffet twice. We all liked the Italian restaurant. The Mexican was good and they even brought out special desserts for us for our check in issues. The Asian was our least favorite. The beach grill was good too. Hamburgers and hot dogs most days but also enjoyed tacos there one day.

No issues with the bars, bartenders or the drinks. Service was quick and they never stop smiling. It's impressive to watch them remember peoples names and drinks. If you are looking for someone to bring you drinks on the beach or polside, this isn't the place for you. You actually have to get up and walk if you want a drink but the bars are close by.

The entertainment was good for what we saw. They work hard and it was a good way to end the day. It was enjoyable to see my son step out of his comfort zone when he was invited on stage during the Circus show to help out with the entertainment. Lots of people talk about the Michael Jackson show which we enjoyed, but we all really liked the Mexican Culture show.

Bucerias is an easy hour long walk up the beach wich includes lots of time stopping to pick up shells. The market is lots of fun with plenty of offerings.

Finally, I want to finish with the resort and the people who work there. This place is clean. They are always cleaning. Never had to wait for a table to be cleared and set, never saw garbage or cups left laying around. The grounds are immaculate. The people working here are friendly and attentive. They work hard and deserve respect and a freindly smile back. We are already planning our next vacation and there is a good chance we'll be booking the Riu Jalisco again with Natalie at Flight Center in Calgary. I highly recommend her and her colleagues for your next vacation.

Bunk beds were good!! We were with a group of 18 ppl, including small kids that used the bunks. Reg twin size. We had 8 different rooms used for all of us. We were in the king (which were 2 double) and a pullout couch which was like a futon. My son slept on futon and said it was hard and totally uncomfortable! Main complaint with the beds, were the pillows!!! Very Lumpy! Bedding wasn’t the best either…..basically covered with 2 sheets!! Found extra blankets in the closet which weren’t big enough to cover the bed. Also curious how much they were actually washed!!!!

RIU do NOT answer these questions on Trip Advisor. You have asked 3 times. Best to Contact Riu Direct.. Too of Reviews, see web site!!! When Jalisco was remodeled a couple years ago. They made two rooms into ONE. So 2 Bedrooms,2 baths. They also made one suite and one room into ONE, so bigger, sitting area, two bedrooms, two baths. As I said before in your other question,Book early as only a couple per floor.. Look in Reviews.. type in Family suites!! Those reviews will pop up, some have PICTURES. Vallarta has None!,only family room, one bath,a little larger than regular room. Good luck..
