Having travelled for over 10 hours last Friday, we arrived at the hotel and were told that we had been ''transferred'' to another Mercure. NO APOLOGY was given. No explanation. Being too exhausted to argue, and convinced that they would do compensate us for the last-minute change, we assumed that there was another Mercure on the promenade.

The staff at Promenade des Anglais lied that we should have been aware of the change in plans as they sent us an email. (No such email was ever sent)

We apparently had been transferred to the worst Mercure in Nice - Notre Dame. The staff at the new hotel insisted that we take a room of EUR200 (the cost of the initial room), not for a double, but a single room. They said that this was what the 'email from the manager' said. However, this manager was not available to take any questions. When we checked, this was more expensive than even double rooms in Notre Dame.

From the lobby, it was obvious that the second hotel was worse in quality. We were put on the 7th floor (apparently the best rooms in the hotel) but ours was awful! Pokey tiny. The 'queen size' bed was tiny, light didn't work and the WC was leaking onto the floor. When we complained, we were told that the maintenance man had gone home. The church bells rang every hour straight into our room and the room service did not pick up the phone when called. As compensation, two free drinks were offered at the bar. (We returned the insulting token)

To crown it all, we noticed that instead of refunding our money, it was deducted again and again- three deductions for one night of discomfort and noise.

Again, the phantom manager had 'just gone out'.

The Mercure brand has left a bitter taste in our mouths. We will NEVER go back again.

The Mercure is currently being renovated (supposedly ready by end April 2016) so not all facilities are available - there's no rooftop bar/restaurant and no fitness centre for example, and some corridors that are in use are being worked on. The hotel's car park is also closed but an arrangement has been made with another spacious underground garage alongside (though I thought the discounted day rate of euros 24 rather excessive). If it were not for these factors I would have rated the Mercure a four rather than a three. It's in a nice location just off the Oxford Street of Nice on a quiet side road, the room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable, with a great terrace, even if some of the design features were odd and the electronic shutter was clunky. The buffet breakfast was very good with a choice of two coffee machines and a variety of newspapers. Service was friendly and attentive. I look forward to returning once the renovation is complete.

We stayed at Mercure Nice in June 2015.

The location is excellent, a few minutes walking from the train station, and a 20-minute walk from the old town.

The privilege room has a comfortable bed, assuring great sleep. Nespresso machine for a good coffee in the morning.

The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub, toilet and separate bidet (a telltale the hotel has not been renovated for a while).

There is a bar and swimming pool on the top floor. If the location is nice for a drink, the bar was a bit disappointing. The bar woman was not much knowledgeable about the wine card.

Service was hit and miss. Some staff were really eager to engage customers. Some just did not care.

Tip : garden side for peace and quiet
Also facing north, less warm in summer

Stayed here for 7 nights on an organised tour with Riviera travel. Hotel was a good base for getting about, we did organised bus trips most days so weren't around the hotel during the day, did not have a chance to use the rooftop pool.
Our room was on the second floor looking out onto the garden, room was not very big and there was a lack of drawers to store clothes, there was only a shelf by the side of the bed and no bedside cabinet for storage. Room and bathroom was adequate.
Used the lounge on the 8th floor most nights, again this was very compact.
Had breakfast every day, this was strange, had most of the european foods like meats, bread and cheese but the only hot foods available were scrambled eggs, chipolata sausages and boiled potatoes??? There was a pot where you could boil your own eggs but they were taking around 15/20 minutes, found out on the last day you could request fried eggs, but there was no sign to tell you that.
Plenty of shops and restaurants around the hotel and only a 15 minute walk to the promenade where there was a lot going on.

The strongest points of this hotel are its location (railway station, tram and major attractions), the panoramic bar and swimming pool, and ... well, I wouldn't know ... The 6 rooms we had with our group all needed refurbishment (dirty carpet, shabby bathroom), and were all far too expensive (170-190 euros per night!). The breakfast room is the scenery of the eternal struggle for life among uneducated bus-tourists, despite the efforts of staff who were making great strides to keep pace with incoming crowds. The elevators are far too small and slow for a building of this size.
Finally, staff was friendly and helpful. But they only executed procedures as described. Anything that was not on their list was quickly discarded. Example: we asked to have a table for our group of 12 in the breakfast room. Reception said: you have to ask the breakfast staff. The next morning, we asked the breakfast staff, and guess who they told us to contact ... Yes, indeed: reception.
This hotel needs an urgent refurbishment of infrastructure and staff. At this rate, my family wants to be treated differently than a busload of Chinese tourists.
