Nestled in a sought-after location, the Meliá Caribe Beach Resort boasts stunning grounds, alluring pools, and inviting beaches, captivating guests with its vibrant atmosphere filled with music and entertainment. However, some travelers caution against the disruptive noise levels. While the resort's amenities are generally applauded, opinions are mixed regarding room quality, which many find outdated and poorly maintained, and the level of service, which oscillates between attentive and sluggish. Additionally, guests have called out the questionable value for money, pointing to overpriced services and unexpected additional costs.

Detailed Reviews
1977chrisg wrote a review Mar 2023
Waterdown, Canada
Hotel's Favourite
My family and I stayed at the Melia Caribe beach resort - “The Level” from March 16-23rd 2023.

This overlapped a few days of our Canadian “march break” or “spring break” days, which was noticeable in how busy the resort was from Thursday-Sunday vs Monday – Thursday of our rough 8 day stay.

I will go into detail below, and break things down from our perspective, but if you want a quick review and move on to the next review, the resort was great. I would give it a solid 4 out of 5. The resort was clean, staff was friendly, food was good, the beach was good, and we all had a great time, would recommend to families to consider for their next stay.

Check-In

We arrived later in the evening, approx. 8:00 PM. The drive is about 20 mins from the airport. We were booked under the “Level” which is Melia’s “upgrade” to your typical resort experience. You can read all about it on their website. It provided us with a separate check-in area, where we and another family were greeted promptly and in a friendly way by their staff. Juan Goncalves was our check-in host, and he was great, answered all our questions and provided us all with drinks and food or coffee while we waited. Yes it took a bit of time, probably 20-25 mins in total. That’s expected and pretty typical of most of the resorts we stayed at. Then part of the level experience is a golf cart shuttle to your room. Special shout out to Juan he was fantastic, bubbly, comical and friendly.

Room

So, here I will talk about the room, and also the buildings and which ones I would avoid for personal reasons. The room was on the third floor, was clean, and very large. The Level rooms are the ones with the large King bed, and jacuzzi tub overlooking the bedroom. His and hers sinks, plus another washroom shower area with another sink. There’s a kitchenette which I am not sure who would need that as it comes with a stove, full fridge etc, my guess is for longer stays and those with special dietary needs could use this to cook their own food, or that they may rent these out to locals on their down seasons and provide a full kitchen. There’s a dining area and a living room area. Two TV’s. Two A/C units and a nice large balcony with 4 chairs and a table. We had two children with us, 16 and 12 years old, and the staff moved the tables around and provided a comfortable thick mattress single bed or cot, and the couch is a large roughly queen-sized pull-out.

The fridge was stalked with 4 beers, 8 water bottles, 6 coke, 2 club soda, chocolate milk and orange juice ever day. You also were topped off with plantain chips, M&M’s, Oreo’s, soda crackers, coffee and tea.

Now – our room location, however, was not the best. As it was in building 46. Building 46, 47 and guessing 41 are not in the best locations if you’d like quiet after Midnight. Every night, there’s a DJ and Dance party at the main lobby theatre area. This does not shut down until 12:30-12:45 AM, and it’s loud. Wall penetrating Bass loud on any front-facing rooms towards this area. Now I love to party still, and I don’t mind loud music, but personally, for me the resort should shut this down at midnight. They eventually move the music into the Casino at 12:45 and they should consider doing this earlier. We did find a bit of a workaround for us but keeping the A/C units running full blast, which created some white noise and helped a bit.

So if you’re a couple with no kids planning on staying up until 1:00 – 2:00 AM, this won’t be a problem, however with kids and having to get up to get a beach chair at 6:00 AM, ever day, this might be an issue. Avoid these buildings if that’s the case. Please see the pics of the maps to see what I mean.

Resort

The resort is beautiful, one of the nicest kept grounds I have seen in a while. Staff are constantly grooming the palms and grass, bushes, trees etc. You can tell it’s a mature resort. A lot of water features and ponds with turtles and fish, and birds. Yes the peacocks are around usually in the morning and evening. Approx 10 or more. The lobby is lovely and laid out well. It is a big resort and somewhat spread out. The walk is not as bad as most say on the reviews. We were in room 46 the furthest away from the beach and it took under 10 mins to walk there. Plenty of shuttles and trains going around, the occasional pick up on an empty golf cart by the friendly “circle” staff. But it is large and wide and is combined with the Melia Paradisus next door and the Adults only Melis on the other side. There are benefits to staying close to the beach and benefits to being closer to the main lobby. The main lobby has the majority of restaurants and bars at night and hosts the main buffet, plus a theatre Casino and DJ nightlife.

Being closer to the beach puts you closer during the day to the main pool and obviously the beach. There is a breakfast buffet at the beach in building 13 Tartufo, as well as lunch, but this turns into a reservation-required restaurant at night. So either cluster of buildings you will need to walk to get to a certain area each day no matter what, it just depends on where you want to be closer to. Also, the beach cluster of buildings at night would obviously be quieter.

Food

The food was good, I wouldn’t say top-notch of the best I have ever had, but nothing to really complain about other than sometimes some of the buffet food was “lukewarm” at best. But not always, sometimes it was hot. It would just depend. Ther food was consistent however and we did prefer to use our “level” privileges and eat the level restaurant and buffet Building 21/22 which is the Riviera. It’s quieter, more intimate. You can order off the menu, no reservations are required for this, or the buffet. It’s your choice every night. Except for the romantic beach night, which is extra money, they have a beach area near the pool which is sheltered and candlelight with an extra special menu. We did not partake in this, but it did look nice. We did eat at the main buffet, and it was good, but what we noticed at the Riviera Level restaurant was that the pasta was made to order here. This goes for breakfast eggs/omelets as well. Also, in the morning you could make a Bloody Mary to your liking at the self-serve table bar area, or a mimosa.

Cape Nao Building 23 at the beach had great lunches, you can order off the menu here. It’s right on the beach, and in our opinion has the best fries and hamburgers at the resort. They also had very good chicken wraps which the kids devoured. The lunch buffet on the beach at building 13 Tartufo was also very good, and though busy, had no issues finding a seat. Also highly recommended.

We did eat one night at the main buffet The Merkado, and it was also good, just very busy, and you didn’t get the same food choices.

We did eat at two of the restaurants, the Hacienda (Mexican) and Capri (Mediterranean) We preferred the Mexican restaurant, it was excellent, we love Mexican food, and you also get your own Mexican buffet at this restaurant, plus order of the menu. We used our concierge Rey to book the restaurant for us (another perk of the Level is your own Concierge). Capri was also good, but it’s less “Greek” Mediterranean than some may expect, and more of a middle eastern Mediterranean-style restaurant. But it is still good food.

Beach

The beach was great, very pretty almost white sand beaches. Nice and wide, the water was warm and at the time of us being there, the seaweed or seagrass was not too bad at all. They had tractors out most mornings collecting what they could.

The floating play park we did use. And we paid $12 USD per person for 30 mins, and that’s all you really need. It was fun, and it does provide a distraction of the kids become bored, I would splurge and advise to try it out. It’s $20 USD for a full hour, but that’s a long time to be out there.

The beach chairs.... yes, it’s true you have to be out there early to get one. My wife would get up at 6:00 AM and be out there around 6:20 or so and had no problems being able to get a chair. This isn’t a new thing at resorts for this to take place. It’s unfortunate and isn’t policed by staff so you do what you have to do. After 7:00 AM I would say you’d be hard-pressed to find a vacant spot. After lunch we noticed some people getting too hot and leaving the area sometimes, and after 3:00 PM you should be able to find chairs vacant again.

And yes, they should order more chairs, especially in the regular area of the beach as there is a “Level” section of the beach. They could easily order 100 more chairs, they have the space. The beach area in front of the lunch buffet is wide open. I don’t know why they fill this area with chairs and umbrellas. It may solve the issue of claiming chairs in the morning as well if there were more available.

The covered beach beds, from what we could see the only ones you need to pay for are the ones right at the beachfront, closes to the water. The other ones are near the pools and set back further from the beach, you don’t need to pay for.

As far as the vendors on the beach, I don’t know what everyone is complaining about. Yes they are there, yes they come almost every day, but the are NOT a nuisance. They only ask once, for the most part and a simple gesture of no and a “no thank you” and they keep moving on. In no way were we pestered or bothered or harassed. Yes I have been to resorts where this isn’t allowed, but in the DR, and on this beach this is allowed, but it’s very minor.

You can walk along the beach, it’s safe and there are a lot of resorts to check out and see along the way, the local people DR people we met were very friendly.

Pools

Main Pool was good, slightly cooler than the ocean temp, but still warm, from what I could see it was maintained and in good condition. There’s a small pool near the lunch buffet, also looks nice, it’s better suited for doing laps in as it’s small and rectangular.

The Level pool is not so good. This pool should be closed off and repaired. Especially in the circular jetted areas. There are broken jets, missing tiles, missing jets, and missing tiles on the pool floor. It needs to be repaired.

Water park – geared towards small kids, I would say 10 and under will love it. My 12-year-old was bored with it pretty quickly, the slides are short, even though there’s a good variety. Kids need to be accompanied by an adult at all times, 18 yrs. and older. The water park was in good working order for the most part, but some repairs were needed. Plenty of lifeguards monitoring. It’s nice that they have it there, but it would benefit from some larger slides. for the adults, only beer is served here, no other alcoholic drinks. And the food is fine I guess, but it’s just fish sticks and chicken nuggets, I’m not sure why so many people rave about the snack bar at the waterpark.

Entertainment

There’s a show at the theatre every night. They are ok for the most part, geared towards kids around 8:00 PM and then at 9:00 – 9:45 PM pending on the night, you get the main show. I don’t really have a standout one in my head I would recommend, they were all ok. It’s not the best I have seen, but not the worst either. Again you have the DJ pumping music the second the show is done. This is moved into the Casino at around 12:30 AM where you can continue dancing.

We didn’t really visit the casino, but it looked good for the size of the resort. About 5-6 various tables to play at, poker, blackjack, roulette. There was a bar inside with TV screens to watch news and sports. Lots of slot machines, and a lounge area. It was never overly busy inside.

Staff

The staff was fantastic. From check-in to the hostesses, bar staff, wait staff, gardeners, and entertainment everyone was smiling, happy, easy to talk to, etc. I’m not sure what some reviewers are encountering, but from what I saw, and how I saw other people at the resort treat and talk to staff, my guess is that it’s not the staff, it’s you who is the problem. (that goes for anyone who complained)

Our concierge, which comes with the Level experience, Rey Dominguez, was great, very helpful, and always available. I could text him and he would reply. He got us an extra bed for the room, extra hangers, towels and sheets when needed. Was able to secure restaurant reservations and would make an effort to find us on the beach to have a friendly chat and make sure everything was ok.

Overall, a solid resort, would recommend going for families. I don’t think upgrading to the Level is necessary. Unless anything I mentioned piques your interest. I am pretty sure it’s more expensive to upgrade to the level when you are at the resort and would best to get the Level experience booked before you come down if that’s what you want. And again if loud music is an issue at night past midnight for you, stay away from buildings 46, 47, and 41, as they get most of the loud music at night.

This is third time I'm in Melia Punta Cana. Facility and landscape is great and well maintained.
Room is well equipped and clean.
Food quality is very mediocre and often served cold, especially selection is small, although there is a lot of different restaurants.
Drinks quality in most cases was really good and personnel of bars and restaurants was very friendly. Reception area personnel was very helpful and professional. Maintenance issues in the room were resolved on timely manner.
On negative side:
It was windy, however due to great location of hotel at the bay and surrounding by reefs, waves were not really high (probably couple feet maximum). However they place Lifeguards on a beach who was over-controlling and restricted swimming. This is outrages, as we specifically choose this area of Punta Cana to swim in the ocean.
Second:
This hotel is trying to be environmentally friendly, which is so stupid. At the beginning of our visit there was bottled water not available in the bars, however it was available in the room. Also they replaced plastic forks and knifes with wooden and served drinks in cardboard cups. This is not good idea.

My husband and I took advantage of the Wellness Package which included one visit each to the spa for a massage or facial, healthy snacks in our room fridge and an air purifier. The room was well cleaned and the building was so close to the Quimera - Level Adult only section so easy access to snacks, drinks and carts were amazing. We were also close to the beach and really enjoyed the adult only level cabanas on the beach.

Our teenage girls stayed in a family room which was not as well appointed or well looked after. It was strange that the room had no place to put clothes, no drawers or shelves just a hanging closet. The access to level was great and we all gathered at the Level pool when the weather was sketchy.

The food in general was not great. It seemed that the food all came from one kitchen and was served at different restaurants both ala carte and buffet. I am a vegetarian who does not eat fish so my options were extremely limited. I knew that would be the case but was surprised at the limited vegetable choices.

The yoga was terrific and I did it almost every morning.
I am a tennis player and was disappointed with the state of the courts. 3 were playable but two were cracked and had non playable portions of the courts. The compressor fan was so loud, conversations on one court was impossible. The racquets and balls were very low quality and I am glad I bought my own equipment. The pro Boris was great, a good player and real gentleman.

We would definitely go back, the staff is terrific and the grounds beautiful.

We arrived late after a long flight from London. The room was ready but one bedside lamp was missing and there were no hand towels (too late to call house keeping).

We booked a “Premium Room Beachside”, expecting to be somewhere near the beach. We were about 200 metres from the beach, the last of six blocks of apartments consisting of 6 (?) apartments per block. The view from our apartment window looked onto something more akin to a half finished garden landscaping job (see photo), with no possibility of seeing anything of the beach and too far away to hear any waves.

So I am not sure what “Beachside” means in Meliá speak.

The Meliá Caribe Beach Resort caters for families whereas the adjoining Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort is for adults only. If you have no kids definitely go to the restaurants in the Punta Cana Beach Resort (a few mins walk).

The service in the restaurants was varied, the Merkado Restaurant by the beach (breakfast & lunch only) the worst of the lot. Nearly all the male waiters were particularly poor, disinterested, no smile. Slightly better in the adults only restaurants, but not much.

We were tricked into being invited to “The Circle by Meliá”, for a special breakfast, to see their “new and exciting venture” in Punta Cana. It turned out to be a timeshare sales pitch. And no breakfast.

There are three Meliá resorts all virtually next door to each other on Bávaro Beach (plus the timeshare location mentioned above):
The Paradisus Punta Cana Resort
The Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort
The Meliá Caribe Beach Resort

We’ve stayed in the Paradisus on a previous visit, and eat in the Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort restaurants on this trip whilst staying in the Melia Caribe Beach Resort, so we have had first hand experienced of all three.

I would rate the Paradisus 5*, the Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort 4*, and the Meliá Caribe Beach Resort, the subject of this review, 3*.

It’s a really 3,5 star service in this so called 5 star resort. Property looks beautiful, but staff is somewhat unfriendly. Food is terrible. If it wasn’t for food, this hotel could have been 4,5 maybe in their dream, but quality of food is very terrible to say the list. Room service is working only until 11 pm and they charged us $10 per order, even though it was supposed to be included. Minibar was refilled once in 3 days (we stayed 9) only 1 bottle of Coke, 1 bottle of Sprite, 2 waters and 1 can of beer.

🦟 Mosquitos are very unfriendly too, they made it clear very first night we moved into our room. Even though we have been promised that someone will come and spray the room, no one ever showed up)

Hope this review will save some time and trouble to my fellow travelers.

The resort itself is beautiful. You can find several spots for a good photo op. Overall our stay was so so. Although we were told the rooms would not be cleaned everyday and we requested that no one enter the room, the cleaning staff entered the room anyway, twice. The room was damp/musty. There was hair on the floor. The head board was dusty and you could see the night stand had not been wiped down properly. The TV and clock didnt work. The mattress had a dent in it on one side as if someone had been laying in that one spot for years. When showering water leaks beyond the shower doors and the bathroom floor becomes a pool of water. The jacuzzi tub in the room was also dirty. The staff does not speak/understand english and they are dismissive. When we sat to eat we had to wait for water or ask for it and then it took forever to be served. We had reservations for dinner and waited 30 min for our order to be taken and then another 30 to 40 min for the food to be served. The food was cold and touch and go (best part is the omelette at breakfast). Pool was dirty. The haglers are in full force on the resort and especially on the beach. There is no pool wait staff or grill that you can conveniently get to. The carts run sporadically. At one point we waited 30 min for one until we decided to just walk. I would not return.

Unfortunately the negative reviews are accurate. To summarize, the rooms are old and outdated, there is a lack of housekeeping and the restaurants do not have the best service.
Starting with the check in process, we were assigned the wrong room. I went back to the front desk to let them know I reserved a family style room and the front desk representative insisted I must have seen the beds wrong. The bellboy took us back to the room and I called and unfortunately had to argue with someone at the front desk because there was no way the room was a family room with a jacuzzi and one twin size bed, there should have been two. Luckily, the bellboy stayed with us and got on the phone to help and they finally admitted that we were in the wrong room and had us moved. The second room did not have washcloths and enough towels. We called the next morning and someone was supposed to bring some to our room. A few hours later, nothing happened but I was able to track down a housekeeper that was nice enough to help. She took care of use the rest of the week. I heard a few people complain about being there a few days and not having housekeeping services. There are two buffet style restaurants and both are horrible, service and quality of food. I could not get through the phone lines on any of the days to make a reservation. I have been to 4 resorts this year and I understand the capacity limitations put in place for safety, but in other resorts they make up for it by having a good quality and selection of food in the buffet, which is not my preference but it has been tolerable. That is NOT the case here, the quality of the food, breakfast, lunch and dinner is so bad, it’s not a good substitute for not having many dining options. At one point we walked down the beach to the Jellyfish restaurant and spent about $150 just to have a decent meal. On my last day we wandered around the different restaurants on the resort and on my third try of begging to get in somewhere, the hostess at the Mexican style restaurant was nice enough to find a space for us. I literally begged! On a positive note, the rooms were not smelly, although old with broken fixtures, the mini bar was stocked with water and sodas and we did not have any issues with bugs as I’ve seen in other reviews. This was my niece and nephew’s first vacation and they had a good time.

We stayed 10/19-27/20. This is a beautiful resort!
First understand there is still a pandemic and this means there are some limitations.
Not all restaurants are open every day. This wasn't really a problem except the app was not working and there was nothing posted so that you knew what was open when. Suggestion to the resort that they post a daily notice in the main dinning areas or lobby letting people know what is open.
That was about the only thing they could have done better.
We did enjoy the main buffet, there was a good selection of food. For safety, there are staff that serve your choices from the buffet.
When it comes to Covid, I felt safer here than in he US. The staff all wear masks and masks are mandatory for guests in public areas. Everything was cleaned and staff kept boxes of masks for anyone who need them and hand sanitizer was everywhere.
After the very quiet week, it was very nice on Friday and Saturday to have local families also at the hotel. The hotel was still not anywhere at capacity, but we did enjoy the sound of children's laughter in the pool.
The occupancy is down so no worries at the pool or the beach about getting up early to put towels on your chairs, you have plenty of room to socially distance.
We loved our afternoons at the Barefoot bar and the service from Antonio! He also kept a watchful eye to be sure people selling stuff from the beach did not bother guests, I appreciate that he did so while being polite about it.
My husband and I also enjoyed great massages, visitors are down and it was so easy to get an appointment I went back to the spa for an extra 30 minutes at the end of the week!
I wish I could remember the name of the maid we had, she was absolutely lovely.! A note; you do need to ask for how much cleaning service you want, due to Covid they are careful not to enter your room while you are there and will provide what service you are comfortable with, just be sure to let them know what you need/want.
My tip for travelers, recognize these are exceptional times and they are doing everything possible to make your vacation the best they can. Relax, be nice and where you can - TIP. We felt very fortunate to be able to take this vacation and realize how fortunate we are. After such a stressful year between all that is going on, especially the craziness of politics in the US it was so wonderful to be able to turn it all off and just chill on the beach. Nothing is better than lounging on the beach looking at the beautiful Caribbean sea to make you feel better!

This was our forth time coming here in the last couple years. We always had a good time and decided to suggest it as we planned a couples trip. Things definitely are different now. Most things there are closed. Had a positive experience with a handful of staff/servers. We Ended up purchasing what’s sold as a “romantic dinner” that included steak or lobster and a bottle of champagne. Steaks were almost half fat and never received our champagne. When we asked about the champagne we received the run around day after day and even at checkout 3 days later. Nobody seemed to have an answer or were always looking into it. The resolution that was offered to us was a 15% discount after wasting another hour explaining the same story that was explained to about 4 other people throughout the stay. It seems like EVERYONE that does approach you, is trying to sell you something. It gets to the point where you get tired of being bombarded with the sales pitches that you have to hide your face or pretend you are sleeping. They do take temp and have you wear gloves and masks which was a positive. I would not recommend or be a patron again.

This was our third stay at a Melia resort and we had a great time. The restaurants were delicious, the resort is beautiful, and the staff consistently went above and beyond. The lobby bars while waiting for dinner had fun signature cocktails so don't miss those (sangria at the Mediterranean places and tropical mojitos at the Asian one). The smaller buildings for the rooms is a very nice set up. The resort is huge but they do a great job with the trains and golf carts, especially around the dinner hours. Bring your own reusable travel mug for sitting on the beach. I do really appreciate they don't have plastic cups but drinks leak through the paper ones pretty quickly. I love the compostable plates and silverware for the beach snack area.
