The selling point of this hotel (and the reason why we keep coming back) is the rooftop pool. You can usually get a sun-bed and the view of central Nice, the Bay and the mountains in the other direction, is unique.
There's a rooftop bar and terrace handy for drinks and snacks. The bar terrace is open till around midnight but, in our experience, sadly underused although it's a great place for a last drink with a spectacular view of the illuminated facade of Notre Dame.
The rooms and spaces are standard fare but the staff have always been friendly and helpful - retrieving, at the end of our latest stay, a nightie accidentally left under a pillow and reuniting it with us when we came back to pick up our luggage.
It's a way back from the bay but handy for the train station and Boulevard Jean Medecin and you can always hop on a tram for a lift down to the old town.

The hotel looked really great when booking it. Jacuzzi, rooftop pool, nice rooms etc. They didn’t mention any closing dates for the pool and jacuzzi on their website (compared to other hotels), so that was one of the reasons we booked it.

We arrived a bit early, but had done the online check-in. Unfortunately our room wasn’t ready yet and the receptionist couldn’t reach the main cleaning lady re status of room for quite a while. Anyway, 30min later the room was ready. The room in general is very good. The only “bad” thing about it is that the water flow in the shower is not that strong.

When we asked during check in if the pool and jacuzzi were open, they said that the pool hadn’t been filled with water yet but that it would be done hopefully the same weekend still and unfortunately the jacuzzi was broken. They did mention the technician was supposed to come still the same day. What a bummer!

When we checked with them again two days later, there was another team of receptionists and one of them immediately said “oh yes it is, it’s on the 8th floor”, whereas the other had to correct her and say it was broken yesterday but it should be fixed now. The concierge guy said “oh, it was working fine earlier this week”. They tried to call the rooftop bar bar man so that he could confirm whether it had been fixed. Again … they couldn’t reach anyone so they told me to check and ask the barman myself (really???)…

So … eventually I did go up and asked the bar man. He said that the jacuzzi was still broken. I also noticed that when taking the elevator when going to the 8th floor, reception had all of a sudden put up papers above the elevator buttons showing the months of operation re pool and jacuzzi … which all of a sudden had become May-September. Mind you, this wasn’t there when I checked two days earlier and the day before. There was another sign near the pool entrance that indicated the pool and jacuzzi were open every single day from 9-20h (or slightly different hours, but anyway no mention of the months though).

I just had a feeling here that either the receptionists were just lying to my face or the communication between all staff was just really really not good. Anyway, it doesn’t look good towards your hotel guests…

Also, the breakfast was nice but it took a long time for the kitchen team to refill the plate with scrambled eggs etc. whenever it was empty…sometimes they didn’t refill the scrambled eggs at all and just replaced it with more meat. Also they didn’t keep themselves to their own food “schedule”. For example, they were supposed to have bacon yesterday (on a Saturday) … there wasn’t any bacon at all … they put some baked sausages there instead.

The location is really good, close to the main shopping street. There’s a tram running that takes you to Old Nice. There’s also another tram line at walking distance that will get you to the airport in about 30min for 1.50 euro.

So this is the reason I’m giving them 3/5. A Mercure hotel should be doing better than this …

Greeted by wonderful reception staff on our arrival and were checked in and shown to our room within minutes. Had room service on the first night and the food was delicious and really well priced. Beds were super comfy and rooms were always cleaned to super high standard and the cleaners were really accommodating when we left the room later than usual.

Location was superb. 10 minute stroll to the promenade and 5 minute walk to the train station where you could catch trains to Cannes, Antibes, Monaco and beyond. Also only about a 25 minute drive from Nice Airport. But you rarely hear any street noise which, for the location, is surprising.

The rooftop bar and pool were great also. Small but fit for purpose and lots of loungers to use. Also had a hot tub and a fitness centre that were open to all guests. Food at the bar was the same as in room service and was also delicious. Cocktails were well priced and much larger than expected which is never a bad thing!

Staff always willing to help - if you wanted to plan excursions you could head to the front desk and they had a huge range of things for us to do.

All in all, a brilliant hotel that really set the standard for our stay in the south of France. We'll definitely be returning next year!

Very clever photography disguises the truth. A lick of paint, a new reception and some new furniture doesn't represent a refurb.
Located 5 mins from train station in main shopping centre. Not close to anything pretty.
Nice reception, rest pretty decrepit with very cruddy & sweaty corridors.
New computer area with no USB points!?
Very, very old & unreliable lifts.
Standard room was like a prison cell (we were ready to walk), superior is better but still poor. Needed renovating, not refurbish & jazzing up a little.
Big tinted windows, no openings, probably from 1970s.
Tiny bathroom with small pre-formed plastic sink & caravan-style shower.
Separate toilet with no airflow, from a time gone by. Not nice.
Bed as hard as the pavement. Literally!
Aircon hardly works at all & often pumps out cigarette smoke from other rooms.
But with no windows, you have no choice.
Doors slamming all night as the slow closers are old and ineffective. More hostel than hotel.
About a dozen sun beds, be quick!
Breakfast ok but boring.
Rooftop bar done on the cheap, not alluring. Music too loud.
Mostly very nice staff indeed, bar the odd arrogant one. Shout out for Alexandra who was charming and very helpful indeed.

We are genuinely puzzled by the good reviews on here. Maybe it's about personal expectations, or maybe people should take their responsibility to other readers more seriously!

Our advice - find a nice old but quaint hotel in a better area. This hotel turned what was supposed to be a nice holiday week into an ordeal.

We have used Mercure before, but never again.

Btw. Nice is VERY expensive.

Any questions, just ask.

This hotel was great! The location is perfect, 5 min walk to a strip with loads of lovely restaurants, and 10min walk from the beach.

Staff were very helpful and spoke English well! Breakfast was tasty and fresh, albeit a little slow on our second morning, during a busy period (waited 10+ minutes for new croissants).

Rooftop bar and pool was fantastic and very relaxing!

Loved this hotel, would definitely recommend a stay!
