Queen Maxima's ready for action! Dutch royal dons camouflage gear as she takes part in a team exercise during a visit to Regiment Engineer Troops

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands showed off her athletic side as she dressed in camouflage overalls to take part in a team exercise with Regiment Engineer Troops in the Netherlands.

Despite being outside her usual glamorous gowns, the queen proved she can look good in any style of colour as she matched soldiers in their green camouflage uniform.

The 53-year-old wore natural make-up with a hint of bronze to accentuate her strong cheek bones and opted to wear her shoulder length blonde hair down, avoiding any discomfort while wearing a hard military helmet.

She stepped out in what for many would be unflattering overalls, rolling her sleeves up to her elbows and getting ready to get stuck in.

The queen took part in a number of exercises with Regiment Engineer Troops in Den Bosch, showing she her ability to take on challenges glamorous or grubby.

In several of the pictures, the Dutch royal is snapped smiling gleefully as she takes part, sometimes having to lean on the arms of troops to regain her balance.

The wife of King Willem-Alexander looked deep in thought as she was pictured talking to one of the troops, showing her enthusiasm to listen.

At one point, the royal was pictured smiling down as a troop went to stick a fabric badge reading 'genietropen' - which means regiment of engineers - on the sleeve of her overalls.

Earlier this week the queen appeared in her more typical gear stepping out in a stunning red ensemble as she reopened the Museum Hindeloopen in Holland.

The Argentinian-born royal looked stunning in red as she arrived in the small Dutch town wearing a knee length dress with long sleeves and a ruffled cow neck.

Maxima re-opened the Hindeloopen, a cultural history museum in the Dutch town of Hindeloopen, which was previously closed for renovations.

Following a long four-day trip to America, the mother-of-three dressed herself head-to-toe in red, wearing her elegant dress with a matching hat that perfectly showed off a few inches of golden hair.

She accessorised the look with red tassel earrings, sophisticated red leather gloves and a thin envelope clutch bag.

Her coordinated ruby red slippers perfectly complimented the bold look which was paired with soft glowing make up and a glossed lip.

Even her nails were part of the coordinated look, though they were painted a slightly darker cherry red shade to break up the vibrant rosy red material of her clothes.

Queen Maxima was greeted by crowds of Dutch locals dressed in traditional clothes who smiled and waved at the royal arrival.

She and her husband, Willem-Alexander, have recently arrived back from a four-day trip around the US.

The two arrived in America last Monday for a four-day tour of America, kicking off their visit in Atlanta and Savannah in Georgia before travelling north to Albany and New York City.
