Dartmouth College student, 20, is found dead in Connecticut River as cops investigate if he was the victim of 'hazing'

  • Won Jang, 20, was a member of Beta Alpha Omega at the Ivy League institution
  • He was last seen Saturday night at a party and found Sunday night in a river
  • Police are investigating the possibility that Jang's death was caused by hazing

The death of a Dartmouth College fraternity brother whose body was found in a river is being investigated as a possible hazing incident.

Delaware native Won Jang, 20, was a member of Beta Alpha Omega at the Ivy League institution.

He was last seen Saturday night at a party on the docks near the Dartmouth boathouse along the Connecticut River.

Jang was reported missing on Sunday when he didn't show up to an event and found dead that evening.

Now police say they've been contacted about the possibility that Jang's death was caused by heavy drinking or potentially hazing.

'We received some emails from the college that indicated alcohol may be involved or hazing may be involved,' said Charlie Dennis, the police chief in Hanover, New Hampshire where the college is located.

'Certainly, we will look into that aspect, too,' he added, though when he was found, authorities said they received no indication of foul play.

In January, Beta Alpha Omega was one of four frats at the school to be suspended over violations of community standards, The Dartmouth reported.

Suspensions can be handed out for 'repeated misconduct, or for misconduct found to be sufficiently serious to warrant stopping all activity for a specified number of terms.'

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a statement that there was no indication Jang had left the river area when they investigated.

Jang, who couldn't swim according to the New Hampshire Union Leader, was found in water that was about 20 feet deep, around 65 feet from shore.

A toxicology report on Jang could take anywhere from three to six months to determine results.

Dean of the College Scott Brown shared his condolences in an email to students Sunday night.

'Won wholeheartedly embraced opportunities at Dartmouth to pursue his academic and personal passions,' Brown wrote.

'He enthusiastically took part in the Dartmouth community,' he added, citing his work as an international student mentor, participation in an entrepreneurship program and his fraternity work.
