Karan Johar reveals his mother was deeply affected by brutal trolling: 'She once broke down and advised me to perform havan'
Filmmaker Karan Johar revealed he has been mercilessly trolled on social media in the past few years. In October 2022, the filmmaker made the decision to quit X (formerly Twitter), and has been away from the platform ever since.
During an interview with Faye D'Souza, Karan Johar revealed his mother was so affected by the negativity that she suggested him to perform havan (homam) to protect himself from the ‘negative aura’ that was surrounding him.
He also remembered the day she broke down while asking why people don't realize how "loving and giving" he really is.
The director stated that perhaps he gets perceived as a bitchy, catty guy who sits on the "high throne of entitlement" and wrecks people's careers because he hosts the talk show Koffee With Karan. He said, "So, when Rocky Aur Rani was releasing, I just wanted it to become a success.”
Karan Johar also recalled being scared of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani's failure at the box office because of constant trolling. The director revealed that although he has never allowed trolls to affect him, in recent years they have gone too far, causing his mother, Hiroo Johar, to break down. He further revealed that he believed the reason why people didn't like ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ was because people hated him.
The filmmaker said that he was misunderstood by the public and that he ended up being the poster boy for everything negative that was being said about Bollywood. He revealed that when he used to return home, his mother would cry every other day while watching a news anchor screaming while talking about him.
On the work front, Karan Johar is all set to direct another film which is untitled yet. Meanwhile, his latest production film ‘Kill’ was released in the theatres on July 05. The action thriller, which stars Lakshya and Raghav Juyal in the key roles, has garnered positive reviews from both critics and the audience.
