🚨Last week, the Tamil Nadu government released the detailed policy notes for the State Budget 2024-25. We at ITDP India identified the key highlights of Chennai’s city budget that further the cause of sustainable urban mobility and development. 🚍🚶♀️🛴 From our analysis, it is clear that Chennai is building on Tamil Nadu's ambitious seven-point grand vision outlined in the State Budget 2024-25. The highlights indicate substantial investments to augment bus-based public transport infrastructure, multi-modal integration, and the expansion of the e-bus fleet. In addition, the budget shows its commitment to adopting a city-level parking management policy, redesigning streets with better footpaths, and critical street intersections. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recently rolled out an online survey, to understand and resolve the city’s acute residential parking problems. The survey, apart from seeking information on the current residential parking patterns, also sought suggestions from the residents on how to resolve the issue. It is great to see Navi Mumbai adopt such a participatory approach to an issue that has become a major concern for our streets – parking!     ITDP strongly believes in ‘parking management’ but also believes that this subject is often entangled in myths and misconceptions. Resolving these myths is critical for any city before planning and implementing parking management systems.  🚗 🅿   Want to know what these myths are? 🚫   1. In the heart of Shivamogga, a remarkable story unfolds of revitalising narrow, forgotten lanes that once served as waste disposal areas. In this video, Mayanna Gowda, former Managing Director, Shivamogga Smart City Ltd., shares the inspiring story of how Shivamogga turned idle lanes into vibrant food courts, children’s play areas, vending zones, and open gyms. He also emphasised that the project's success was driven by active participation and coordination among all stakeholders, prompting the development of the ‘One City One App’ through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for innovative stakeholder engagement. Last week, we invited you to share your visions for the national sustainable transport budgets, and here are some of the key insights. Many of you emphasised the need for high-quality networks of footpaths, cycling tracks, and public transport. Additionally, there was a strong call for enhanced road safety and a significant reduction in vehicular emissions. With our urban areas facing the challenges of increasing vehicle populations and the resulting congestion and pollution, it is essential that our policies and budgets work together to foster sustainable cities. In the interim budget announced in February this year, the government took a bigger step towards sustainability by increasing the allocations towards pollution control from INR 756 crores to INR 859 crores, under the National Clean Air Programme. They also introduced several policies to promote the electrification of buses. This reaffirms our hope that the upcoming Union budget for 2024-25 expected in July, will align with public demand for #sustainability. Discover the transformative work undertaken by Varanasi Smart City as Dr. D Vasudevan, Chief General Manager, shares insights on overcoming the many challenges of working in the narrow streets of Kashi. They not only laid underground utilities in one of the world's oldest cities despite the complex layers of unrecorded networks but also adopted a humanitarian approach to address concerns. The team used the approach of working when the city sleeps and clearing up when the city wakes up, making the project stand as an example of how to minimise disruptions to daily life. 🌟 This week, we spotlight the transformative journey of the Lanes of Kashi in Varanasi, from the #StreetsForPeople Compendium! 🌟 Can heritage be preserved while modernising cities? This age-old concern gets answered when we take a look at how the ancient city of Kashi has been revitalised and modernised by Varanasi Smart City’s initiatives. Under their 'Redevelopment of Wards of Old Kashi' project, the city’s renowned network of intricate and narrow lanes has seen a facelift. The project aims to enhance a total of six wards, by preserving their unique heritage while adding public amenities. From reviving the sewage lines and water lines to paving with traditional Chauka stones to adding thematic wall art, this project aspires to elevate the quality of life for residents and attract more tourists.
