Last week, we invited you to share your visions for the national sustainable transport budgets, and here are some of the key insights. Many of you emphasised the need for high-quality networks of footpaths, cycling tracks, and public transport. Additionally, there was a strong call for enhanced road safety and a significant reduction in vehicular emissions. With our urban areas facing the challenges of increasing vehicle populations and the resulting congestion and pollution, it is essential that our policies and budgets work together to foster sustainable cities. In the interim budget announced in February this year, the government took a bigger step towards sustainability by increasing the allocations towards pollution control from INR 756 crores to INR 859 crores, under the National Clean Air Programme. They also introduced several policies to promote the electrification of buses. This reaffirms our hope that the upcoming Union budget for 2024-25 expected in July, will align with public demand for #sustainability. Watch this space as ITDP India puts out a comprehensive wishlist for Budget 2024-25 🚶♂️🚴🚌🚦 #SafeStreets #CyclingTracks #CityBudgets #Morth #MoHUA #HappyStreets #Footpaths #Pedestrians #publictransport #Buses #electrification #roadsafety #decongestion

ARE CYCLISTS HARMFUL FOR ECONOMY❓ A cyclist can harm the economy in a few ways, though these effects are generally outweighed by the positive impacts. One way is through decreased demand for cars, which can impact the automotive industry and its associated sectors such as manufacturing, sales, and maintenance. This reduction can lead to job losses and reduced economic activity in these areas. Additionally, cyclists contribute less to fuel taxes, which are often a significant source of government revenue used for infrastructure development and maintenance. This can result in budget shortfalls, necessitating the reallocation of funds from other sectors or increased taxes elsewhere. The reduced need for parking infrastructure, while positive for urban planning, can negatively affect businesses that rely on parking revenue. This can lead to financial strain on municipalities and companies invested in parking facilities. Lastly, if cycling accidents increase due to inadequate infrastructure, healthcare costs might rise, placing a burden on the medical system and potentially increasing insurance premiums. However, it's important to note that these negative impacts are relatively minor compared to the numerous health, environmental, and economic benefits cycling brings, such as reduced healthcare costs, less pollution, and decreased traffic congestion. #Economy #Cycling #Transportation #AutomotiveIndustry #UrbanPlanning #Infrastructure #PublicFinance #EconomicImpact #Sustainability #HealthcareCosts

Indian cities are some of the most air-polluted cities in the world. Personal vehicles are the major air polluters in cities, that need immediate action. While taxing high-pollution vehicles can be an immediate approach, it may not be suitable for everyone. So there is a need for alternative strategies worth considering. Promoting Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Tax relief and charging infrastructure can boost electric and hybrid vehicle adoption. Improving Public Transportation: Enhancing buses and trains reduces private car usage. Establishing Low-Emission Zones: Limiting high-pollution vehicles in specific areas can lower emissions. Cycling and Walking: Encouraging walking and cycling for short trips promotes cleaner commuting. Carpooling and Ride-sharing: Providing financial and moral incentives for people opting for carpooling and ride-sharing decreases the number of vehicles on the road. Cleaner Fuels: Promoting alternatives like natural gas and hydrogen reduces emissions. Instead of focusing on only one option, multiple strategies can help reduce city pollution. Share your thoughts on which solutions you think are best for your city's unique challenges in the comments below. 🗣️🌍 #CleanerCities #PollutionSolutions

🌏 Decoding the Challenges of Electric Vehicle Adoption in Nepal 🚗 @Shilshila Acharya, Director of the Avni Center for Sustainability, reflects on her EV journey: "It is comfortable, cost-effective, and doesn’t contribute to emissions." Despite soaring interest, Nepal faces hurdles in embracing EVs. Prashanta Khanal from Sudridh-Nepal Urban Resilience Programme advocates for a shift to public EV transportation to alleviate congestion. Government data reveals slow progress in electrifying public transport, falling short of ambitious targets. Learn from India's initiatives, like West Bengal's expanding EV bus fleets and a recent $7 billion plan for 10,000 EV buses. Limited charging stations and e-waste concerns pose additional challenges.
