🚇 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫-𝐁𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦? A gender-blind transport system operates on the principles of equality rather than equity, often overlooking the unique travel needs of women. For instance, think about a woman who drops her kids off at school, goes to work, picks up groceries, and then returns home. Charging equal rates for peak and off-peak hours or not offering discounts for such multiple travel routes can quickly add up, disproportionately affecting her financially and limiting her independence. 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 💡 Often, our male colleagues question strong reforms made for women, like the free bus scheme. Their main argument is that this is not equality. They are right—it is not equality; it is equity. What is the difference? 🚬 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐬? Once upon a time, cigarette companies got doctors to push smoking. 🧐 And it worked! That's why, when big companies promote something, always ask why. Are electric cars as great as they seem? 🚗🔋 "𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜" can truly make a difference when 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 move efficiently. 🚌 Stay curious and question everything! 🌱 #Throwback #CriticalThinking #ElectricCars #StayInformed Image Courtesy: History.com . . . 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧? 🏙️🌳🏃♂️🚴♀️ Many young children are growing up without experiencing the joy of cycling in their neighbourhood because it isn't safe anymore. Traditional outdoor games are fading away because there aren't places to play, and neighbourhoods are more averse to the "noise" of child play. Is it any wonder that children are retreating into mobile phones and gadgets? As urbanisation surges, many cities fail to create child-friendly environments. Limited green spaces, shrinking playgrounds, and unsafe pedestrian zones restrict children's ability to play and explore. The land is finite, but what is one space that we could use for better? It's parking. Parks, not parking! Prioritise for: 🌿 More parks and playgrounds 🚶 Safe walking and cycling paths 🌳 Green infrastructure 👫 Community engagement Let's rethink our urban landscapes to ensure that our cities support the well-being and development of our youngest citizens. 🚶♂️🚶♀️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬? 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐬? 🤔 In urban planning and business strategy, the focus is shifting towards prioritizing people over parking. Studies show that creating pedestrian-friendly environments can significantly boost local business revenue. When spaces are designed for people to walk, shop, and interact, it enhances the overall customer experience and encourages more foot traffic. It's time to rethink our spaces and put people first. Let's create vibrant, thriving communities where businesses can truly flourish! 🌟🏙️ . . . 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬? 🤔 Welcome to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and specifically its enchanting Old Quarter. Every weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday evening, these bustling streets transform as private vehicles are banned. Crazy, right? But it’s not. 🚫🚗 Take a look at the people dancing. 💃🕺 While some are performers, anyone can join in the fun. These streets come alive with vibrant song and dance performances, all free but accepting donations. 🎶 People gather to enjoy the lively atmosphere, sit around the lake, or simply chill with family in this public space. 🌟 Here’s a thought: Public spaces are meant for the public. 🌍❤️ #Hanoi #Vietnam #OldQuarter #PedestrianStreets #PublicSpace #UrbanDesign #Policy #HappyStreets . . . 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 👌 The Chief Technology Officer of Transport for London, Shashi Verma, discusses how leaders need to promote buses to solve India's public transport problems. He gives #Chennai as an example. In 1970, sustainable travel made up 95% of all trips, with buses alone at 42%, but this has dropped to 55% in Chennai, with buses at 22%. He unpacks a lot in this insightful piece.
