🚨Last week, the Tamil Nadu government released the detailed policy notes for the State Budget 2024-25. We at ITDP India identified the key highlights of Chennai’s city budget that further the cause of sustainable urban mobility and development. 🚍🚶♀️🛴 From our analysis, it is clear that Chennai is building on Tamil Nadu's ambitious seven-point grand vision outlined in the State Budget 2024-25. The highlights indicate substantial investments to augment bus-based public transport infrastructure, multi-modal integration, and the expansion of the e-bus fleet. In addition, the budget shows its commitment to adopting a city-level parking management policy, redesigning streets with better footpaths, and critical street intersections. Overall, the intent is clear: to make mobility comfortable, safe, and accessible for all. Additionally, there is a strong focus on developing environmentally sensitive projects such as lake redevelopments, Adyar River restoration, and the creation of parks and green spaces, which can serve as a blueprint for recreation and urban resilience.🌳 🌟We are excited to see these initiatives come to life and enable Chennai to become the lighthouse city for sustainable mobility! 🌟 To checkout highlights from the Tamil Nadu budget speech of February 2024, read here- https://bit.ly/4eNOgLu #SustainableTransport #ITDPIndia #PublicTransport #HealthyStreets #RoadSafety #ParkingManagement #InclusiveMobility #TransitOrientedDevelopment #TamilNadu #Chennai

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recently rolled out an online survey, to understand and resolve the city’s acute residential parking problems. The survey, apart from seeking information on the current residential parking patterns, also sought suggestions from the residents on how to resolve the issue. It is great to see Navi Mumbai adopt such a participatory approach to an issue that has become a major concern for our streets – parking! ITDP strongly believes in ‘parking management’ but also believes that this subject is often entangled in myths and misconceptions. Resolving these myths is critical for any city before planning and implementing parking management systems. 🚗 🅿 Want to know what these myths are? 🚫 1. Parking is a right 2. Increase parking supply to resolve the parking issue 3. Multi-level car parks can resolve the issue 4. Curtailing parking can hurt commercial businesses 📖 Read this blog which we penned down in 2019, explaining the four common myths people have around parking systems: https://lnkd.in/gWz3w2Ws #NaviMumbai #Parking

🚴♂️ Inspiring Leadership in Action 🚴♂️ On July 2, we witnessed a remarkable moment as the outgoing Prime Minister of the Netherlands, #MarkRutte, cycled his way out of his office. This powerful image fills us with both joy and hope for the future. In the #Netherlands, cycling isn't just a mode of transport—it is a way of life embraced by all, including its leadership. Mark Rutte’s choice to #cycle sets a shining example for world leaders everywhere to adopt #sustainabletransport practices. Imagine a future where such commitment to sustainable transport is not just an option, but the first choice and the norm. We hope to work towards such a future when we see similar dedication in #India and across the globe. 🌍🚴♀️ Let us pedal towards a greener, healthier future! Video courtesy: @MiesBee (From X)

In the heart of Shivamogga, a remarkable story unfolds of revitalising narrow, forgotten lanes that once served as waste disposal areas. In this video, Mayanna Gowda, former Managing Director, Shivamogga Smart City Ltd., shares the inspiring story of how Shivamogga turned idle lanes into vibrant food courts, children’s play areas, vending zones, and open gyms. He also emphasised that the project's success was driven by active participation and coordination among all stakeholders, prompting the development of the ‘One City One App’ through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for innovative stakeholder engagement. Discover how this project preserves the essence of heritage while fostering lively community spaces in small urban pockets that serve as a model for other cities with space constraints. Last week, we invited you to share your visions for the national sustainable transport budgets, and here are some of the key insights. Many of you emphasised the need for high-quality networks of footpaths, cycling tracks, and public transport. Additionally, there was a strong call for enhanced road safety and a significant reduction in vehicular emissions. With our urban areas facing the challenges of increasing vehicle populations and the resulting congestion and pollution, it is essential that our policies and budgets work together to foster sustainable cities. In the interim budget announced in February this year, the government took a bigger step towards sustainability by increasing the allocations towards pollution control from INR 756 crores to INR 859 crores, under the National Clean Air Programme. They also introduced several policies to promote the electrification of buses. This reaffirms our hope that the upcoming Union budget for 2024-25 expected in July, will align with public demand for #sustainability. ITDP India is proud to have supported the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) in creating the 'Parking Policy' for the Chennai Metropolitan Area. It has been a valuable learning experience for our team, and we look forward to working on the next steps towards implementing parking management strategies. At ITDP, we believe parking policies are crucial to plan, implement, and enforce parking management systems comprehensively. An efficient parking system contributes to an improved pedestrian experience and overall urban mobility, fostering a vibrant urban environment. We are excited to work together with CUMTA and other stakeholders in Chennai towards creating urban transportation systems that prioritize the needs of the people, with a focus on creating a livable and inclusive community. #UrbanMobility #SustainableCities #ChennaiTransport #ParkingPolicy #ITDPIndia

Discover the transformative work undertaken by Varanasi Smart City as Dr. D Vasudevan, Chief General Manager, shares insights on overcoming the many challenges of working in the narrow streets of Kashi. They not only laid underground utilities in one of the world's oldest cities despite the complex layers of unrecorded networks but also adopted a humanitarian approach to address concerns. The team used the approach of working when the city sleeps and clearing up when the city wakes up, making the project stand as an example of how to minimise disruptions to daily life. With over 65,000 public grievances resolved by Smart City’s Public Relations Officer, the project stands as a testament to community-centred urban development. 👉Watch the full video interview on Kashi’s monumental efforts here- https://lnkd.in/gzWZ_fsa Hardeep Singh Puri | Kunal Kumar | Vikash Chandra | Dr. Deivasigamani VASUDEVAN Smart Cities Mission
