We stayed at this hotel for 4 days. It was nice and its location isn't really ideal, far from all the "action" (la Rambla, Barceloneta, sightseeing places such as Sagrada Familia....). We were able to get to these places using public transportation but the bus and metro stations are a bit far. Other than that the hotel in itself was good, clean, staff is friendly and helpful. Also, we went around the 11 of September which happens to be a national day for the Catalans (or something to that effect) so there were demonstrations, streets and metro were overcrowded and some streets closed off. Try to avoid going around that date!

We spent 3 nights. Nice room on street side.
he hotel is very close to the Diagonal.
It is in a lovely residential area with many restaurants so the not-quite central location was fine. The lobby is modern and the rooms updated and clean.
Price wise this is a good location and offers good value

Located just north of Ave Diagonal, this property has very comfortable rooms, that are reasonably priced. We stayed for 4 nights, and liked the location so much, came back a week later before heading back home.

The rooms all face Calvet ( Road) which can be a little noisy) and free Wifi is available in the lobby area.
Rooms were supposed to have free service, however, sometimes we were able to access wifi without logging on.

Staff. I can only say GOOD things about the staff. Helpful, knowledgable of Barcelona, and able to connect us with a few great restaurants, not only in the neighbourhood , but through a large area of the city.

Neighbourhood. Although Calvet ( Road) is a little busy, the area has a number of quite side streets. Cool little restaurants, and some great coffee shops for the early morning Barca coffee.
Much appreciated!

Recommended for a short traveller stay of this would be a great business hotel.

I will book this hotel again, when I come back to Barcelona.

We stayed at the AC Iria Barcelona for 4 nights in October. Due to many negative reviews, we were expecting to have to check out the 2nd day and look for a more suitable place but we're Marriott rewards members and wanted to give it a chance. We're glad we did. I'm not sure why the nay-sayers had such a hard time-maybe they're just not used to European hotels and breakfasts. Anyway, the room was larger than other hotels where we've stayed in Europe. We had a bed and breakfast deal and the food choices were even better than those at a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel we stayed at in Madrid. There were pastries, yogurt, breads, meats, cheeses, cereals and fresh fruit. Perfectly adequate in my opinion. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. We were close to enough cafes and a reasonable taxi drive to other sights such as Port Olympic, one of our favorite hang out places by the sea.The main complaint we had was that the windows did not at all block out the street noise. We were on the 5th floor and still we could hear cars, voices, etc. as if we had an open window.

First of all let me say that I am a loyal Marriott traveller and a platinum level rewards member. I just stayed at the Irla Barcelona and checked out after my first day. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, especially Hector on night duty and Rita during the day. However, it is a complete misnomer to call this property four star. The room just about allows negotiation for one person let alone two. The "bathroom" is not a room at all but a glass enclosure of a sink and toilet. It allows as much privacy as a curtain around a hospital bed. The shower ceiling was discolored from a probable leak above since the shower bottom is level and allows water to run out if one isn't aware while showering. You can hear the traffic and garbage trucks from the street on one side and the voices from the hallway on the other. There is no soap dish so there is no place to put the golf ball soap, literally a golf ball shaped soap. We have stayed at other AC properties in Pisa and Torino and found them more spacious with an actual "bathroom alcove". This property is not even two star. Having the Marriott name affiliated with this property is completely misleading.

Response from acirlagm, Front Office Manager at AC Hotel by Marriott Irla
Responded Apr 4, 2014
Thank you for posting this review and sharing your feedback on your experience at our hotel. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience you may have experienced. Unfortunately, we did not meet your expectations. We gave the maintenance supervisor some feedback and have required him to take additional cares in bathrooms. We deeply regret the disturbance. Our downtown location can mean extra street activity, as much as we try to contain it. On your next visit, we would be happy to assign one of our quieter, non street-facing rooms upon request. Our Front Desk Department, specially Rita and Hector would like to thank you for your kind words. Please know that we have taken action to resolve the issues and thank you for the bringing the matter to our attention. Sincerely, Carina Alvarez | Front Desk Manager | AC Hotel Irla |

The rooms are small but that's expected for a destination such as Barcelona; that wasn't the issue as it was just my husband and I.

When we arrived we were given a room on the first floor; I nearly wanted to cry at the thought of an entire week in those conditions as it smelled like smoke extremely bad. After 30-45 minutes of trying to adjust to the room I couldn't stand it anymore and went to the front desk to ask if that was a room for smokers. They said NO! That it wasn't a room for smokers but that they allow guests to smoke in the rooms and they made it sound like it was going to be ok if the room was aerated more... Mmm... Ok, I decided to give it another chance. Nope. It got worse so we asked for a different room. At first the staff was reticent saying the hotel was booked to capacity and they couldn't give us a different room. To their credit they asked if we could wait a few hours until they review their records more in detail and after about half an hour they informed us we could move to a room on the 4th floor. Voila! No smell whatsoever.

It did bother me though that they tried to make it look like that first room was not for smokers and that I was making a bigger deal of it than it was. I was generous to give it 3 stars from this point of view.

Otherwise, it is in a nice residential area; groceries store and pharmacy very close by in case of need; plenty of breakfast places and restaurants.

We stayed one night at the AC Hotel Irla prior to the departure of our cruise from Barcelona. We arrived early (10:30am) after an overnight flight from Seattle. The staff was very accommodating and let us store our luggage both on the day of arrival and departure while we played tourist. The staff made up our room up quickly and was ready and available for us to move in when we returned at 12:30pm. The room was very clean and the furnishings in excellent condition, but was much smaller than what appeared in the pictures. I was hoping to get a quick email out to let our daughter know that we had arrived safely, but when I asked about the business center, I found out that it only consisted of a work table in the lobby. There were no computers or printers, equipment that would normally be found in a business center. The booking site (Expedia) also stated that there were in-room safes, but I didn't find any. That evening (Friday), there were still plenty of people on the street (midnight). Unfortunately, we could still here them, even though we were on the third floor. The room was not as quiet as I hoped for.

The hotel was located two blocks away from Avinguda Diagonal, a main street in Barcelona with the hop on/hop off bus Turistic (red and blue lines) stopping about three blocks away at the Placa de Francesc Macia. This placa is also the end of the T1 tram line. Boarding the tram and going two stops will allow you to connect with the rest of the Barcelona Metro and the airport. We did make it La Sagrada Familia on Saturday morning. It was about a 12 minute (8 Euro) cab ride from the hotel.

The other bright spot in addition to the staff was the European breakfast. There was a one cup coffee maker which had a variety of coffees to choose from, Spanish ham and cheese, pastries and breads, juices, cereal, and fruit. Breakfast was included in our room price. The charge would have been 16 Euros had it not been. If I had to pay for it separately, probably would have gone down a block from the hotel on Carrer de Calvet and gone to one of the bakeries (one on each side of the street). There are also a couple restaurants on this street as you walk towards Avinguda Diagonal.

If you are using this hotel as a jumping off point for a cruise, take a cab. Normally, I try to take public transportation, but It is much easier to take a cab. The price ran a little over 20 Euros down to the cruise ship terminal from the hotel.

The AC Hotel Irla was a good hotel and a good value, but unfortunately not as advertised.

I arrived at 07:00 am due to an early morning flight, expecting to wait in the lobby for a few hours for my room.
I was so wrong. The friendly receptionist said I could have a room even as early as this. Excellent and unexpected service.
The room was nice too with a minibar with soft drinks, free of charge.
Location is great! Quiet and yet very central, close to Avenue Diagonal.
Breakfast was nice too-
Everybody I met were very friendly, polite and service minded. Nothing was a problem and it´s obvious they care for their guest.
Highly recommended.

The hotel is located in a good residential area of Barcelona. There is another AC at the Sants but I did not care for the Sants neighborhood. The rooms are big enough, modern, very clean and what I expect from a Marriott. La Rambla is far away and you will have to take some sort of public transportation but this is the part of Barcelona you must get to know. It is just outside of the tourist area, and the prices are incredible better (half perhaps). You will enjoy better food and eat with locals at Tejada tapas which is only a couple of streets away. Shopping is close by on Diagonal and some of the late night and most popular discos are a short walk away (Luz de Gas and Sutton).

Great location on great safe street 1 block away from Ave Diagonal. However, the heating and cooling system at the hotel is one or the other. NOT both. So, the building was still set for "heat" despite it being 75 degrees days and 65 nights. It was not comfortable sleeping with the room warm. I opened the window for some circulation (which then forced the curtains open...not permitting any darkness in the room) and the street was noisy. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, music from local bars, people conversing, dogs barking..you get the idea. Finally at midnight, I went to the front desk, and asked about the a/c, (told there is none) and asked if there were another room NOT facing the main street. There was not, but at midnight we changed rooms to the 5th floor, which the deskman said may be quieter. It was SLIGHTLY less noisy, but even hotter! Remember, hot air rises!
Lobby is new, all marble, and very nice. Free beverages and wifi. Staff was as helpful as they could be. Hotel is modern clean. Room was average European size. Bath slightly smaller than I would have hoped but clean and new. Pillows are the cheapest uncomfortable foam pillows one can find.
I suggest you contact the hotel regarding air conditioning before booking a room. Other than that issue, I was happy with this choice.

how far is the AC hotel by Marriott Irla to the closest hop-on hop-off bus stop
Answer from acirlagm
Greetings from AC Hotel Irla by Marriott! The closest hop-on hop-off bus stop is Diagonal / Francesc Macià and it is located on Diagonal Avenue just 4 min away from the hotel. From there you may take either the red or blue line and it would show you all around the city from the old town to the Park Güell! If there is anything else we might assist you with, do not hesitate to ask. Thank you.

I didn't experience any road construction around the hotel during my stay (June 2, 2019). If there is construction it may have started after my stay or been completed before my stay. My room overlooked the street and was quiet.
