I recently completed a multi-night stay at the AC Hotel Irla in Barcelona. I originally chose this hotel as I was looking for a Marriott affiliated property at a reasonable price in Barcelona that was within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and public transit for both business and some leisure time. I've stayed at the other AC Hotel at L'Illa mall before, but tried the AC Irla as it was a little cheaper per night for the time I needed to be in Barcelona, and I have no regrets about the decision. (IN fact, I was told they share a manager and are actually a short walk from each other)
The AC Irla is actually a smaller hotel but still very much an AC property. If you've never stayed at an AC Hotel that means a modern and comfortable lobby, spotless simple furnishings in the bedrooms and a nice simple European breakfast. at check in the host was very friendly and I was recognized as a Platinum Elite member and quickly given my key. If you're not familiar with AC Hotels, the breakfast is not free, even for high status members. You do get a discount on breakfast, but I had a rate that included it, so took the bonus points instead.
My room was on the 5th floor and after a quick ride in the TINY elevators, I found corner room at the end of the hall. I do have to say that this hotel is quite a bit smaller than the AC L'Illa. The hallways and rooms are both smaller. As a solo business traveler my queen bed room was plenty big for just me, but would not be suitable for a family or travelers who need a ton of space to spread out. The room was spotless and the furnishings simple and modern. There was no dresser, but a closet to hang some clothes with a safe and a large area to keep your suitcase. There was a small minibar and a work desk and chair. The bed was typical European which means firm but comfortable. There was plenty of power outlets and the wifi in the room was fast enough to watch Netflix at night. The TV has tons of international channels but I only found a few in English, but it was enough for a business traveler.
The bathroom was clean and the shower was quite good despite being absolutely tiny. AC does provide bottles of shampoo and soaps, etc...
In the morning the breakfast area was never crowded and again the host was very friendly. There were basics like coffees, cereals, yogurts, breads with meats and cheeses and fresh fruit. There is also the wonderful spanish omelet. But you do also have the option of ordering some fresh cooked eggs from the kitchen. Despite being simple, everything was good and I was never wanting anything more for breakfast.
I do have to say I have two small complaints about the room. First, is that the room on the 5th floor was VERY warm. Being January there was no AC in the rooms, and the fan didn't do a good job of cooling the room. I tried opening the window but it wouldn't stay open and the street noise was very loud. And that would be the second small problem. The streets around the hotel are quite busy and the noise was louder than expected but not horrible. I did need to leave the curtains closed the whole time as you can clearly see into the apartments across the street and vice versa.
Despite these, I really enjoyed my stay and would absolutely stay at the AC Hotel Irla again during my next business trip to Barcelona.
