AC Irla stands for " Attitude Center " or " Awful Center " ?

Reviewed Jul 16, 2019
We had a family trip to Europe that included London, Paris, Rome , Pisa and our last stop was Barcelona. We had high expectations for Barcelona and were all very excited before our trip but sadly were very disappointed.

The only positive thing about this hotel is the " location " and one of the front desk members who was very helpful, forgot her name.

We were talking to a member of the staff who said he was a manager about their breakfast and how disappointed we were just to give them a feedback, and instead of hearing out our concerns we were told by him " we don't force our hotel guests to eat here " ? Basically, we were just looking for some fresh brewed coffee, not coffee from a Keuirg/Nespresso machine and scrambled eggs nothing fancy. When you pay almost $20 USD per person you would at least expect to have fresh coffee and eggs for Breakfast. We quickly realized talking to them is like talking to a wall.

We had 2 adults in both rooms for 3 nights ,and they were both booked on Marriott website with each person's name , however we got 1.5 pillows ( one small not sure if it was even a pillow) 1 regular size ( which had stains - see pix) and 1 body towel / 2 small towels and 1 bottled water. They definitely do not check our reservations showing that it would be 2 people under the reservation to accommodate the need or preference from the Marriott account. Their mattress size is a full-size , smaller than queen or king size. I would think that this hotel is designed for ONE individual, as rooms and beds are super small. When we brought up the issue of only having been provided 1 of each thing, the "manager" told us that it is the guests responsibility to call the front desk and ask for an extra pillow, water and towel knowing that there would be 2 guests in each room.

Their cleaning crew is insanely loud in the morning, again this is a small hotel and when someone is cleaning the hallway or the room next door - there is no way you can relax and sleep, the walls are really thin.

At the check out , we mentioned these issues again nicely, and we were told again by another front desk staffer that we could have just called and ask for an extra pillow and towels, etc.... So, the question is why do we make a reservation then? 2 adults in each room , how about nothing more but just an expected service of 2 regular pillows and bathroom towels for adults...

If you could afford a couple of extra bucks then you could do yourself a huge favor by staying in Marriott's other property : AC Hotel by Marriott Diagonal L´Illa . We stayed there one night , and the difference was night and day ... huge rooms , friendly staff and decent breakfast ...

We don't normally write negative reviews, but this one was a must to share our experience. It was a lot of attitude from staff and not an enjoyable experience at all.

Overall good hotel with very nice location. The downside is that upon check out the printer was broken and they were unable to provide a bill. The staff said they would send it later via email but 2 weeks later, I'm still waiting for it.
I will say that the staff is super nice and the accommodation is acceptable.

This is a clean, modern hotel in a nice part of Barcelona that has all of the conveniences. My room was well equipped and comfortable, and a good value for the price. My stay was quite brief, but I would not hesitate to stay here for a longer visit to Barcelona. The hotel staff was accommodating and helpful.

We stayed here courtesy of my Marriott points for the weekend while visiting Barcelona to watch a game at the Nou Camp. It’s about 3km from Las Ramblas but daily walkable as it’s flat. It’s close to Avda Diagonal with many bus stops including for the superb hop-on-off bus that is 30 euros a day or 40 for two days. With three routes, a two day pass is great value.
The hotel has a gym and serves breakfast but some moan at 16 euros despite the variety. The only hot food is bacon and beans. There’s no bar or restaurant but you can buy little wines. Or step across the road to one of many independent licensed cafes. Barcelona IS NOT expensive to eat or drink out - just avoid central tourist areas. We had a three course menu of the day including beer or wine and bread for 14 euros and it was cracking. We found wine at less than four euros and beer for around two. You can walk to the Nou Camp. Very friendly staff but with only 32 rooms, it usually only has one on reception so it took me 15 mins to check out due to a sudden arrival of lots of people trying to check in. Accommodation in Barca can be expensive. This was free to us and I may have begrudged over 150 euros a night - but that’s big cities for you. If you want cheaper, avoid the brands!

For a night in Barcelona for work this hotel was more than adequate. I particularly appreciated the welcome from and the positive attitude of the reception staff. Thank you for the welcome and help from them!

The bedroom was small but had everything I needed and I think presented good value for money. Breakfast was good. Not magnificent but good.

The only downside for me was the noise. I was on the 2nd floor and could hear not only the traffic - normal but the windows could have been better - but I could hear everything going on in the corridor and in the nearby bedrooms.

I think if I had had a better night's sleep I would have happily given this place a 5/5 rating.

I recently completed a multi-night stay at the AC Hotel Irla in Barcelona. I originally chose this hotel as I was looking for a Marriott affiliated property at a reasonable price in Barcelona that was within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and public transit for both business and some leisure time. I've stayed at the other AC Hotel at L'Illa mall before, but tried the AC Irla as it was a little cheaper per night for the time I needed to be in Barcelona, and I have no regrets about the decision. (IN fact, I was told they share a manager and are actually a short walk from each other)
The AC Irla is actually a smaller hotel but still very much an AC property. If you've never stayed at an AC Hotel that means a modern and comfortable lobby, spotless simple furnishings in the bedrooms and a nice simple European breakfast. at check in the host was very friendly and I was recognized as a Platinum Elite member and quickly given my key. If you're not familiar with AC Hotels, the breakfast is not free, even for high status members. You do get a discount on breakfast, but I had a rate that included it, so took the bonus points instead.
My room was on the 5th floor and after a quick ride in the TINY elevators, I found corner room at the end of the hall. I do have to say that this hotel is quite a bit smaller than the AC L'Illa. The hallways and rooms are both smaller. As a solo business traveler my queen bed room was plenty big for just me, but would not be suitable for a family or travelers who need a ton of space to spread out. The room was spotless and the furnishings simple and modern. There was no dresser, but a closet to hang some clothes with a safe and a large area to keep your suitcase. There was a small minibar and a work desk and chair. The bed was typical European which means firm but comfortable. There was plenty of power outlets and the wifi in the room was fast enough to watch Netflix at night. The TV has tons of international channels but I only found a few in English, but it was enough for a business traveler.
The bathroom was clean and the shower was quite good despite being absolutely tiny. AC does provide bottles of shampoo and soaps, etc...
In the morning the breakfast area was never crowded and again the host was very friendly. There were basics like coffees, cereals, yogurts, breads with meats and cheeses and fresh fruit. There is also the wonderful spanish omelet. But you do also have the option of ordering some fresh cooked eggs from the kitchen. Despite being simple, everything was good and I was never wanting anything more for breakfast.

I do have to say I have two small complaints about the room. First, is that the room on the 5th floor was VERY warm. Being January there was no AC in the rooms, and the fan didn't do a good job of cooling the room. I tried opening the window but it wouldn't stay open and the street noise was very loud. And that would be the second small problem. The streets around the hotel are quite busy and the noise was louder than expected but not horrible. I did need to leave the curtains closed the whole time as you can clearly see into the apartments across the street and vice versa.

Despite these, I really enjoyed my stay and would absolutely stay at the AC Hotel Irla again during my next business trip to Barcelona.
