It's probably worth mentioning that I was traveling for business and had no choice about the hotel because Gaylord Opryland is exactly the type of place I wouldn't choose of my own free will. It's very large, taking about 10 minutes to get to the gym from my room, for instance. There are a number of restaurants inside, designed so you don't need to leave. However, the food and drink are quite expensive. A lunch salad with chicken in the sports bar was $19. The quality of the food was good, however. There are two swimming pools, but no water park, although one is planned. There's a nice gym, but it's not quite large enough when there's a meeting (and, I think there's probably always a meeting) at peak times. If this sounds like your ideal vacation, then it's probably good.
There is a mandatory resort fee. Unfortunately, my company doesn't ever seem to understand these - like I'm golfing or something. What it seems to get you is 2 bottles of water/room and Internet. This is neglecting the fact that I would get free Internet anyway as part of the Marriott Rewards program. Parking is $29/day which seems a little crazy. The walk to many rooms from the lobby is quite a haul. No offer to assist with bags. There was construction to renovate some of the hotel rooms (in Delta) while I was there. This was unannounced in the middle of my stay and required a significant detour. There was one sign indicating a detour, but not really enough direction to find the detour the first time. The staff were professional, but not especially pleasant. Room cleaning and wait staff were fine.
The rooms were pretty well appointed, however, the ones with balconies in the Cascade area are definitely nicer than in the Delta area. My room air conditioning never seemed to get cool enough, even after calling for maintenance. It was rather humid. The staff made a remote adjustment, and it did improve for about a day, but then was back to the previous situation. The refrigerator also didn't really get cold. There didn't seem to be a way to adjust the temperature in the refrigerator. It was cooler than the room, but definitely not refrigerator temperature.
The Grand Ole Opry and Opryland Mills shopping are within walking distance, but not especially close (particularly if you have bags), but there is a shuttle (that doesn't operate in the evenings apparently). There is a gas station across the highway from the property for drinks, snacks, etc., and there is a sidewalk and a traffic light to help you get there. However, it is quite a long walk. I was definitely glad of my car to be able to escape the property and to get something for breakfast and snacks so that I didn't have to participate in the overpriced breakfast. I wish my conference wouldn't return to this property. In short, I think it is a bad hotel for conferences for people who go to a lot of conferences. If you do one a year and it's more like a bonus/vacation and you bring the family, it might not be so bad.
