Our plane landed on a run way surrounded by zebras and giraffes, and we immediately knew we were in for a great time. We were picked up at the airport by our amazing guide (and new best friend) Robert. As we pulled into the hotel, Robert stated "Welcome Home". We were met by the full staff who came out to greet us to say the same thing. Over the next three days, the entire staff (especially Robert, Bonface, and Joseph) did everything they could to make the hotel feel like home for us.
Any review of the camp has to start with the view, which is basically a Lion King animation come to life. We are a family of experienced world travelers, and the view walking in literally took our breath away every time we walked back into the restaurant/lounge area. Our rooms were perfect- great views, fantastic amenities, great bed. It was fully stocked with drinks and snacks (all free of charge. One of my favorite parts of Angama was that they do not nickel and dime you over things. Want a drink? Grab a drink. It's an open bar!). You get the same butler for all your meals (ours was Bonface, who we loved!), which means he gets to know your preferences and by day 2 he would have drinks waiting for us when we returned!
The safaris themselves are ridiculous. By the end of the second afternoon we were laughing at how spoiled we were- Oh, there's a herd of elephants? Only slow down if there's a really cute baby one. Robert is an exceptionally talented guide- he knows where to locate animals, how to be patient, and how to be aggressive to get you into the best position for pictures. Thanks to his expertise, we got to see a leopard eating a wildebeest, two cheetahs lounging in the sun, and a FULL pride of lions (three males and about 10 females) after a rainstorm. We saw hippos, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, cape buffalo, warthogs- the list goes on and on. Robert knew all of them, as well as tons of facts about them. He knew every bird we went by (our father is an avid birdwatcher, so that was very important to him) and could identify them from a distance. He has an unmatched eye- he spotted the tip of a lions tail from 100 yards away, slowed down to wait, and we ended up seeing three lion cubs and their mother when most drivers would have gone right on by.
The staff is fantastic about making experiences happen- we took a hot air balloon ride over the plains, we had multiple picnic breakfasts in the African sunshine, we watched the sun rise from the perfect spot, we treated ourselves to luxurious massages on the patio of our tent, they arranged for a running partner for my sisters for two morning runs. They arranged a tour of the local Masaii village for our sisters to experience local customs. Anything we needed, we got, no questions asked. It is a luxury hotel with luxury service, parked in the middle of the most stunning natural beauty you can imagine. I have nothing negative at all to say about our time at Angama, and can only hope we get to go back in the future. Among the many, many, many lasting memories we have, we will always remember the last view we got as our plane took off. Our guide, Robert, standing on the runway waiting to wave to us as the plane departed, making sure we knew it was a place where we could feel at home.
