I was looking for a few days away before a working trip along the garden route. Having flown from the the UK to Durban I was recommended the Umngazi by the owner of Rissington Inn in Hazyview.

Being a retired small hotel owner, I am demanding but this place delivered and met my expectations.

The place has a non corporate feel and offers a great level of accommodation, service and style which many corporate places could learn from. I hired one of the adults only villas and the place was clean, quiet and spacious. Even the monkey who stole a pear from my room liked it!

Overall the three meals a day package of food was good, but they need to learn to make a decent tempura batter as what I was served seemed like the fish batter from lunch. That aside the standard of food and diversity was good and the staff attentive to ones needs.

I walked along the beach opposite the hotel several times for a few hours accompanied by a wee stray dog who was a talker. A delightful little fellow who I hope the hotel has now adopted? The beach was simply so clean (I only picked up 3 stray bottles in four days) and there was no litter and I mean no litter. Even in the Galapagos I found litter......The hotel also offers a free drink for a bucket of collected litter. Joyously I could not achieve this as there was so little!

It was lovely to stay in a place that has been around for decades, that a corporate hotel failed to make a go of (Protea) and then in 1997 a local bought the place and has been remodelling since then.

So if you want a family vacation stay in the river facing lower units and if you want an adults only stay stay higher. The views higher are better and you are near the great spa who gave me an excellent massage.

Dear David Wow! Your review leaves us absolutely speechless. It is so unbelievably heartwarming and we thank you for taking the time to compile this review. I am so sorry to hear that the tempura batter was not to your liking - I will certainly forward this feedback to our Kitchen Manager and Sous Chef who are always eager to improve where they can. The little fellow was adopted by one of our guests from Cape Town - he was named "Gazi" and living the dream with his new family. We are so happy about his happy ending! We hope to welcome you and your family back to Umngazi in the near future. With warm Pondo greetings from our little piece of paradise.

We loved our week here!

The location is beautiful, the property and equipment is modern, fresh and clean and the all inclusive meals were delicious and catered very well for all taste preferences (including vegetarian). The nearby walks, beach and activities were great, and the kids areas were very well used and appreciated by our 2 young children.

The only suggestion I would make is to provide more information on the extra activities and walks - the info on the interactive screen was too high level, and I asked for more info at reception but struggled to get clarity. I think that a booklet with detailed info might make this easier for both guests and staff because the activities are very worthwhile to do!

Thank you Umngazi staff for a lovely week and a lifetime of memories <3

We loved our stay at Umngazi. Delicious meals - breakfast, lunch and Dinner. The hotel staff were all lovely and so friendly and accommodating. I was very impressed too with the Covid regulations. There were notices and reminders everywhere and all seemed to comply and wear masks. I didn't see anyone bucking the rules. Also sanitised regularly as there were sanitising stations all over which served as reminders.

Umngazi is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location, however I’m not sure we would return in a hurry. The service in some areas is very poor; both the reception staff and the dining room staff couldn’t be less interested in helping you, and getting any information out of anyone is almost impossible. I think because most guests are return visitors, the hotel just assumes you know how things work, but, of course, if it’s your first time there, you really don’t. Luckily we met some friendly return guests who were happy to “show us the ropes”. The bar staff, the ladies at the spa, and the staff who facilitate all of the kids activities, on the other hand, are wonderful.

The food is good and there is lots of it, and it is great that kids are allowed to attend both dining areas, however the kid’s dining room and the adult’s dining room opening times do not overlap, so if your children eat dinner with you, but aren’t keen on eating what the adults have on offer, they have nothing to eat.

The activities on offer (once you manage to find out what they actually are) are excellent and varied, especially the kid’s activities. The rooms are lovely and very private, and if you’re lucky enough to get a sea facing room, the view is magnificent.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Umngazi, our children especially, but as it’s a very long 5.5 hour drive from Durban via potholes, goats, and drunk pedestrians, I’m not sure we’d return in a hurry. I think, for the price, there are equal, if not better, venues with attentive staff and a far less arduous journey to get to them.

Dear Guest Thank you very much for your detailed review of Umngazi Hotel and Spa. I am extremely sorry that you have such mixed feelings and that your stay with us was not as satisfactory as you would have wanted it to be. It is extremely hard to receive such a negative review and I am sorry to hear that you won't be returning in a hurry. Unfortunately the road from Durban, goats and drunk pedestrians are things completely out of our control and, no matter how much we would like to change it, we're not able to. During the last few months after lock down, we have had more 1st time guests than return guests and none of them have felt "the hotel just assumes they know how things work" - our receptionists give all info upon check in, they provide you with a brochure of all activities available and we even have an Interactive Screen at our reception area with all info. There is always a manager on duty and present during breakfast, lunch and dinner and I find it very hard to believe that "getting any information out of anyone is hardly impossible". The room type assigned to you is also not dependent on "luck" but on your booking preferences and budget available. If you're budget allows for a sea facing room, we will allocate a sea facing room as per your booking. We are glad that you and your family had the opportunity to stay with us at Umngazi. South Africa really is a country filled with the most beautiful places and may your journey only be amazing. Sending you warm Umngazi greetings. Kind regards Melissa

Food, Venue, Staff, Accomodation, unspoilt beaches. What an amazing facility, that truly lived up to all the hype we had heard.
The meals are out of this world, with variety and freshness of product, unthought of for such a remote location.
Attention to detail from the staff was beyond expectation, and at many times, we forgot we were on a family holiday.
Pricing and value for money cannot be beaten.

In these uncertain crazy times. It was a great escape from reality to connect as a family. Our kids and us had an equally wonderful experience.

The food off course exceeded our expectations. The lunches were the highlight of my day. An amazing variety that met all dietary requirements.

The room was spacious with good quality linen. The showers were high pressure and water was always nice and hot.

We stayed in a chalet close to the facilities which helped a lot as our kids are still young and could roam relatively freely

Fantastic location but a bit of an outward drive to the resort.
the only issue I had was the fact that pool side guests would dispose of nappies in the communal waste bins situated in the pool area. I would suggest that signs be erected requesting this not to be allowed based purely on hygiene standards and as a courtesy to other guests.
I would also suggest that more care be taken by the staff when packing the table cutlery by using gloves as to avoid any contamination onto the utensils that could create stomach issues as was the case during our stay. Alternatively please vacuum pack the cutlery on the tables to avoid contamination.

Dear Guest Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with your suggestions after your stay with us. We appreciate your feedback and will sit together as management to look at how we can improve our offering as per your advice. It was very unfortunate that there was a stomach bug going around all over South Africa which made it very hard for us to contain at Umngazi. We follow the highest hygiene standards in all our departments and we did everything we could on a daily basis to try and curb cross contamination. We are really sorry that you experienced stomach issued during your stay. The remote location of Umngazi, situated on the Umngazi river mouth, is one of the futures that makes Umngazi so special. We are sorry to hear that you found it an outward drive to the resort. We hope that we can welcome you back to our little piece of paradise in the near future. With warm Pondo greetings from our team.

Umngazi really is a gem. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt as if we were in a small piece of heaven. The food was divine. The head chef created his own New York Style Cheesecake....it is a must. The best croissants in the whole of South Africa topped of with beautiful wine collections. Terry our barman at the Emlonyeni Pool made the best Pina Coladas my wife tasted in a long while. She still misses it. The guided walks to the blow hole and bird walk in the forest witjh Freedom and Albert enriched our stay. The rooms itself contained everything you wanted and the couples spa session were a real treat. Every morning we woke to Nguni cows walking to the beach. Umngazi basically blew our minds. Thank you for the great week.

We spent 3 amazing days at Umgazi and I would highly recommend it! There is a lot to do, including hiking, trail running and canoeing. For those with kids there are activities every day giving parents a break. Those without kids will appreciate that the dining room and bar are children-free. The food was incredible with brilliant vegetarian and healthy options. The staff were professional and friendly. A massage at the spa is a must! It was the perfect place for a family holiday and we will definitely return.

Dear Richard We are extremely encouraged by your kind compliments. Thank you for highly rating your stay with us. You surely experienced all that Umngazi has to offer and we appreciate you informing future guests of all that it has available. Umngazi is a family friendly resort and we do allow children in the dining room under supervision of their parents. School holiday periods are normally a hive of activity but our out of season periods offer peace and quiet. We also have a kiddies dining room that caters to the little ones at earlier times. You surely leave the cares of the world behind when driving through the gate and filling your stomach with delicious snacks and meals leaves you fulfilled. We have the most incredible team from back to front areas and they make Umngazi incredibly special. It's is fantastic to know that your time with us was well spent and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. With warm Pondo greetings from the Umngazi team.

What is normally a very enjoyable experience as has been the previous 15 or so times I’ve visited umngazi this will be the last. The lack of boating activity and allowance of such have resulted in a lot of atmosphere and entertainment factor to be forfeited. To top it off, cold showers the entire weekend as the room next door enjoyed there hot water leaving us with none left. Food was good which can be expected at over 3500 a day. The resort seems to cater mostly for the elderly at this time and I would recommend that anyone over the age of 14 and below the age of 30 to steer clear from here on out. I really hope the old umngazi will surface once again.

Dear Justin. Thank you for your call prior to your visit where we discussed our restrictions with regards to the use of boats on the Umngazi river. Following the hard lockdown of 2020 we decided to reduce the size of boat motors used on the sensitive Umngazi estuary to less than 10hp. We felt strongly that we needed to do our bit to contribute to protecting this pristine marine conservation area. Jetski's have large motors and cause massive wake-wash, would be detrimental and are not permitted on the river. We do welcome guests bringing their own boat motors of less than 10hp to use on the river. We also offer kayaks, SUP's, canoes and fishing kayaks that all add to the wonderful activities on the river. All our rooms have their own geysers to avoid guests sharing one. Your comment allowed us to check the geyser in the room that you stayed in and thankfully we found no problem with it. Umngazi welcomes a broad spectrum of guests of all age groups and our other reviews are testimony to the enjoyment they have when visiting us in paradise on the Wild Coast. We are pleased that you enjoyed what our chefs prepared but please note that the rate you quoted in your review is for two guests in a sea facing room inclusive of all meals. Regards from the Umngazi family.

Hi - 1. We were 2 adults and two kids, we had 2 interleading rooms- I think you can have max 3 people per room, you’ll have to check with the hotel. Beware if you have small kids, the patios are high up and the banisters are like horse fences- small ones will fall through the gaps. 2. Don’t think there are many places on the way Once you are in Transkei, didn’t see anything remotely liveable beyond a shak or mudhut to and from Umtata airport. 2. We flew there from JHB - not advised, as the hotel has no transportation what so ever, no airport pick up, no cars to take you anywhere- we had to hire Bafana In his personal polo to go to Port St John’s and Sun shuttle to and from the airport and hotel. So once you are there - you are kinda stuck. So your own car is a must. Especially in an emergency. ( Kids always have accidents etc) Side note- try and find out what the kids activities are in advance, they only put it up every morning at 8, so you can’t really plan in advance. If your children are younger- forget having meals with them- their cafeteria closes 30min before the adult one opens- and unless you are happy with your kids having French fries at your table after they had their meal- arrange kids meals to be packed up and brought to your table later. Adult Meals were great- but too fancy and way out for my little kid. Make sure you have enough data- cos every question to reception is met with- check out website or look on the interactive tv in reception…. Otherwise it was lovely, beaches are great and walks are fun- just get a guide - don’t attempt it alone.

We travelled from Port Edward via Bizane and Flagstaf, the road is manageable but like most local roads in the area has its hazards and pot holes. I suspect it is significantly shorter than via Umtata.

You can do Mooi River to Umngazi in about 6-7 hours. We drove from Krugersdorp and went through Underberg/Kokstad and then Flagstaff Lusikisiki. Roads in EC (Transkei) are potholed and lots of speed humps!! I’d strongly suggest traveling in a bakkie! Coming back to Joburg, I’d recommend sleeping over in or around Howick as it’s about half way. Hope this helps. Irrespective you’ll have a wonderful time there!

Hi Thank you for your message. Most of our guests do use the N3 route, +-870km, and some stay over in the Midlands. An alternative is down the N1 to Bloem, Aliwal North, Barclay East, Elliot, Ugie, Mthatha, just over 1000km but similar timing. The scenery on this latter route is breathtaking. Safe travels.
