ANGAMA MARA- Welcome to the Angama Mara. Only a year old, facilities are amazing. The views over looking the Mara are breathtaking to a say the least. Rising almost 2000 feet above the Mara the views from each of the rooms and the main reception area are Out of Africa. Literally, this is the exact place they filmed the movie and there is a plaque commentating the making of the movie. Service level truly world class, the best of the best in Kenya. Room Service, beverage service, anything you need at anytime was the best. Landry service was even top notch. Guide service and vehicle was top notch. Daniel our Guide was truly a notch above the 4 other camps we stayed at. Food, I would give it 3 stars, long way to go until it becomes 5 star. Absolute best WIFI of any camp in Kenya!!!! Salads, vegetables and fruits were good. Going to have to upgrade the chef and provide better meat quality. Outdoor BBQ nightly was enchanting. Hotel tents are to close together, noise factor was not what you would expect from this level of property that the Angama truly is. They simple placed the tents to close together. For the price you pay you expect better solitude. Guide service and vehicle was top notch.
The Mara reserve seems like a highway like the 405 in So Cal. Way to crowded and over done. They are going to have to come up with some kind of a solution. We watched for three straight days the Wilderbeast trying to make their crossing of the Mara but failed. With 75 vehicles of load tourist they would time and time again get spooked and just keep moving. Yes very sad. Like I said, hundreds of vehicle going up and down the Mara highway does not make for good safari. The camp we went to before our arrival at the Angama had one vehicle for every 1 million hecta acre.
This place is like 100 vehicles per, not a very good experience at all. We have changed plans and are head to Tanzania where they have less tourist, less vehicles and much more bigger and wide open spaces. Sorry Mara, but you have a major problem with over doing it on tourism. You would be better off going to Disney World in Florida on their lion kingdom safari because there would be less tourist.

Thank you so much for this super review - as a one-year-old we often feel a little overwhelmed by what we have built up there on the edge of the Rift Valley but reading lovely reviews such as these make all the angst of running a new business so worthwhile. Daniel and the team at the lodge were delighted to read your kind words about the service you received whilst staying with us - even the laundry team were tickled pink to crack a mention. They are often the 'forgotten ones' tucked away in the back of the house working diligently to ensure our guests' laundry is delivered back on the same day. Thank you! The issue of the tents being close to each other (minimum 10m apart) is a tricky one - we wanted every single tent to have the same spectacular view over the Mara Triangle and beyond. If we had placed some tents away from this I think all hell would have broken loose! And added to this something really weird happens up here in the clear air - we can hear the Maasai warriors singing from over a mile away so even if the tents had been double the distance apart we sadly would still have been faced with this issue. But thank you for bringing it to out notice. We do sweetly remind guests if they can hear their neighbours they certainly can hear you .... sometimes it works :) With regard to the vehicle impact during the crazy 3 months of Migration Madness we are in constant discussions with the Governor of Narok County (in which the Mara falls) as to how better to manage this. It is a sensitive issue because seeing a crossing is on the bucket list of so many travelers and quite understandably so. It feels a bit like trying to have a quiet visit to the Sistine Chapel in August. There is certainly work to be done on managing vehicles at the crossings - especially on the far side of the river. What goes on there is enough to make one's toes curl. To block the animals entry/exit points is totally unforgivable. I will be sure to forward your comments on to the Governor. I know his response will be the Reserve needs to harvest as much income as possible over the high season in park fees - this money sustains the Mara for the other 9 months of the year when poachers are endlessly trying to infiltrate this beautiful reserve. It's a double edged sword and I totally sympathise with your views. Having said that I can happily promise that outside of the Migration season the Mara Triangle is blissfully quiet and has amazing game viewing 12 months of the year. If you head south from our lodge chances are you will only see a handful of other vehicles the whole day. Some locals say the viewing is actually better outside of the Migration because all those pesky wildebeest have gone back to Tanzania and peace reigns once again. Warmest thanks Nicky Fitzgerald
