Being a fan of "Out of Africa" and realizing that the Angama Mara was the site where the movie was filmed, I just could not resist to book a stay there. We were truly amazed at the view of the Maasai Mara from our "tent" and from the hotel restaurant.

We stayed for 7 nights. Only one camp/section of the resort was opened due to the COVID situation, we felt all of the guests were comfortably spaced out while having meals at the restaurant. The only exception was that on one rainy night, we have to stay inside the enclosed restaurant to watch the parade/dance, our group just stayed for a few minutes since we were not comfortable seeing another guest smoking indoor and within arms length of each other.

Going out for game drives are the most memorable part of our visit. Fred (our guide) was very knowledgeable and hard working. He is a bird expert and even carries a bird encyclopedia with him! We started at sunrise everyday, and on a few occasions, we stayed out until sunset! Fred was very attentive and took good care of us when we were caught in torrential rain showers. As you may know, the weather is unpredictable here and when it rains, it pours hard! So, having a rain jacket would come in handy. Fred even serves us picnics (breakfast + lunch). Having picnics at the Mara is such a pleasurable experience!

Complaints and Cautions - Since the resort is located in the wild, there are plentiful of insects flying around. Insect repellent and Sunscreen are a must. Just be mindful while walking within the resort grounds, you may encounter a friendly zebra. Also, the monkeys are quite aggressive and they howl very loud. While dining at the hotel restaurant, we noticed the hotel owner and upper management were having meals at the nearby table. During the entire time, no one bothered to come over and did any sort of greetings or introduction. Having stayed at many luxury resorts, this is quite awkward because they will gladly greet and meet you unless they are very occupied with VVIPs. Well, you can say at the Angama Mara, they very much respect the privacy of resort guests.

Dear Teddy Thank you so much for coming to stay with us in March. Fred asked me to please send his warmest thanks for the kind words you wrote about him in your review. I was delighted to hear that you are an Out of Africa fan and that you enjoyed the view from your tent. Tent 14 in North Camp does offer some of the very best views of the beautiful Mara Triangle. My apologies for those pesky baboons - it is their home but I do so wish they would behave a little better and not make such a racket calling out to each other. It was such a pity that it rained on the night of the Maasai performance and it had to come indoors making you feel a little uncomfortable. On these occasions we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. With regard to your disappointment at not having been greeted by me please accept my apologies. Our stays overlapped by one night and it was most remiss of me not to have come over and introduced myself. Your agent Katie went to great lengths to advise us that you both highly value your privacy and I hope we met your expectations in that regard. Once again my warmest thanks for coming to stay Nicky

My boyfriend and I recently spent two nights at Angama Mara. This is most probably the most luxurious camp in Kenya, and I would imagine it is also one of the best now in Africa.

The lodge is owned by a lovely couple Nicky & Steve who were actually at the lodge when we visited for their daughter Kate's traditional masai wedding. The couple have been in the business for decades and their attention to detail is very noticeable.

We stayed in North 15, which is the furtherest tent away from the main restaurant area, but also one of the most private. The tents are very spacious and you want for nothing. I had a massage one of the afternoons which was fantastic. The masseuse set the bed up on the outside decking, where there was a breeze and a view of the elephants below us. While I was having the massage my boyfriend made use of the swimming pool and had a little gym session!

What makes this place so special to us was the staff. The could not have been nicer. Every single person from the managers, waiters, room stewards and night watchmen had a smile on their face, always seeming delighted to see you! Hats off to our guide, Daniel. He was brilliant. Since we lived in the Mara ourselves for nearly three years we are well acquainted with the flora and fauna. I'm particularly interested in birdlife, and Daniel could identify literally each and every one of them and teach us something that we didn't know before. He found us three black rhino, a creature that is extremely rare today in the Mara, and was always in tune with our photography needs etc. He set us up beside the river for tea & coffee during the morning game drive. Everything was presented really nicely and again attention to detail shone through.

The food was spectacular. The menu had a couple of options at each meal. All of which I would love to have tried, but what we did have was all delicious. Huge well done to the chefs who are doing a great job! They set up a bush dinner for all of the guests on the first night, another lovely experience with lots of lanterns hanging from the trees around us.

Thank you to the whole team for taking such great care of us!

We travel frequently around the world and stay at luxury destinations.
Angama Mara was the BEST overall lodging experience we have ever had anywhere.

The Animals: that's why you come on Safari. We saw ALL of them and our guide made sure we did. We went during the great migration and it was worth it.

Location: Breathtaking views from your luxury tent and from the restaurant. There is no better location in the Masai Mara and trust me we drove all around it. Believe the pictures and be prepared to be blown away.

Service: Seamless in all aspects. It is truly a personalized experience - from start to finish. You will not get this at one of the chain lodges. Everyone knows where you will be and when you will be there and are ready for you. You become friends with the staff that is graciously serving you. We will never forget the friendly faces.

WHY is this place so special? The owner has a long career in hospitality and this is her only project. She hand picks the staff. She takes a special interest in her guests' personal wishes. The focus on customer experience is truly exceptional. I cannot stress what a difference this makes.

Special thanks to Wilson (the best guide at the lodge), James (training to be the #2 best guide), Wiki (the best butler at the lodge), Albert, George, Lumaian, and Nicky.

There are lovely reviews There are wonderful reviews And then there are reviews that just knock it right out of the park. Thank you from us all at Angama for sharing your stay with us, starting with BOOK IT! in the title. That was a first for me and it brought a huge smile to my face. I was delighted to spend time with you at Angama - and so was the team. The more time I spend with guests the less time I am nagging them. After three weeks at the lodge they performed a happy dance on my departure (I turned around and caught them doing it as I was driven out). I do love spending time with this merry crew and our wonderful guests. They are both a blessing and I am so grateful every day to all those who make it possible for our business to flourish and in doing so being able to support the reserve and our neighbouring communities. We really do have the best jobs in the world - delighting our guests and making a difference. Thank you for coming to stay with us most especially so during these upside down Covid times. The resilience and fortitude our guests show in having to deal with endless PCR tests, QR codes, TT codes and paperwork boggles the mind. Wilson asked me to add his warmest thanks for your gracious comments about him. From us all up here on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, asante sana Warm regards Nicky

The view alone is worth 5 stars. Yes it’s that good. Pictures just cannot capture the expansive panorama of the Great Rift Valley. The tents are absolutely huge and comfortably appointed. You’ll enjoy a soaking tub with a view of the GRV, double vanities and possibly the best shower in Africa. The bed was comfortable and Violet did an exceptional job keeping things tidy.

The food was terrific as well. A creative menu was beautifully presented at every meal. Adlight was the perfect hostess who had our drink order down pat immediately. Very kind and accommodating and a pleasure to get to know.

You will not do better than Sofie for your game drives. Very knowledgeable and a capable driver who knew just where to look for the animals. She was a gracious hostess as well who had plenty of refreshments onboard for all our drives. Just delightful to be with.

My only concern with this property is the wooden flooring in the tent is polished to such a high gloss you simply cannot walk on it in stocking feet without risking a fall. One of our mates did in fact take a tumble but thankfully was not injured. The brick flooring in the reception area/ bar/ restaurant suffers from that too but adds changes in elevation you might not see coming. Some not so obvious steps are located throughout. Upon our arrival I was so drawn by the view I walked toward the deck and missed the two steps down and almost crashed into the glass doors. It was an unsettling start to our visit that unfortunately bothered me for our entire stay. As I told my wife, that’s not a big concern if you’re young and spending daddy’s money on your honeymoon but you might want to give it some consideration if you’re daddy!

All in all a lovely property but watch your step!

Dear Arizona Daddy ;) Thank you so much for this feedback, and sharing your word of caution with other travelers. I was sorry to read that the unsettling start stayed with you, and we'll take a look at how to ensure that the floors aren't so slippery, or indeed there are adequate prevention mechanisms in place for future guests - especially as one is naturally drawn towards that view! Sophie, Adlight & Violet all join me in thanking you for appreciating their work, and in a mostly male-dominated industry, isn't it wonderful to see so many powerhouse ladies making their mark. Thanks again for coming to stay, and taking the time to share your experience here - I'm sure others will find it helpful. Regards, Steve
