My family of 6 adults and 4 children decided to take an impromptu trip to Masai Mara and my sister found great reviews on Angama Mara and we decided to go with it.
There is very little I'd change about this place for it to be perfect! The tents were well equipped with everything from milk for your coffee to an air horn to call for help Incase you forgot to close your balcony and a baboon decides to visit. (Luckily they didn't have to be used) The pantry was well stocked, a few good reads left around the room for your evenings in, and great toiletries and amenities. Perhaps an iron would be a great addition (but then again they offer free laundry service, so why would one want to iron their own clothes, time permitting?)
What stands out here is the incredible service though. From Joseph who tended to our every need, and James who was our private butler, there was no room for any want. Everything was handled with extreme professionalism and efficiency, but most importantly, a massive smile. From housekeeping, to the manager and everyone in between, there was a genuine warmth exuding from everyone which made us feel right at home. The highlight for me was Alice, our safari guide who was there every morning at the crack of dawn, or even before to take us out to the park for our game drives or drive us to our sunrise hot air balloon ride. Not only was she an encyclopedia of information and knew the workings of the Mara and its inhabitants inside out, she was extremely good with keeping the kids engaged and within a day, became an extension to our family. Her good vibes and warmth were unparalleled to any guide I've come across anywhere, ever. Flying out of the Mara to Nairobi, the last words I heard from the kids were, 'We're going to miss Alice'. I miss Alice, too!
The food served at the common guest center was very good, and the chef was open to take requests and food preferences. They rotated the menu to keep it interesting. The picnics packed for breakfast on our game drives were extremely well thought out from yoghurt with granola, sausages, passion fruit juice, some fruit, an egg sandwich and the works. What stood out though was the bush BBQ hosted by the hotel which served fresh bread, Guac, hummus and fresh vegetables as starters, followed by some of the best BBQ-ed meats, chicken, fish and eggplant that I've ever had. The ambience in the bush with bonfires and candle light were perfect. The sundowner with a Masai warrior dance performance another night was absolutely well organized too.
I would highly recommend Angama Mara to anyone looking for an absolutely holistic experience in Masai Mara. They are only a year old, but the years of experience they have in their owner and staff reflects in every aspect of their service. I left with a heavy heart.
