If it's good enough for Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, it's good enough for me. This remote spot was where Redford's character expressed a wish to be buried in the 1985 film "Out of Africa". And you can see why: Perched high (300 metres) on a rocky ridge overlooking the breathtaking views of the Masai Mara, you could be forgiven for thinking that you have just arrived in heaven, - and you won't be disappointed. From the moment you land on the camp's own tarmac runway and are greeted by the reception party - some in their colourful local costumes - you take on a sense of well-being, confident in the knowledge that you will be pampered something rotten.
This 1 year-old development of 30 tented suites, spread over two camps in 700 hectares offers luxurious accommodation under "canvas". It brings a whole new meaning to the term "al fresco".
The service is friendly, efficient and attentive, and you are allocated your own butler who will attend to your every need, whether it be restocking the mini bar, organising the laundry or arranging for a meal to be served in the tent. For our safari trips, we had Sammy as our guide, who never once was stumped for an answer, and his enthusiasm and knowledge of his subject was as infectious as it was informative. He was as thrilled as we were to see a serval cat - something of a rarity in the wild. As for the other animals, there was never a dull moment: in our 4 half days of safari-ing, we became almost blase at the sight of elephants, zebras, lions, cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, wart hogs, ilands, hyenas, jackals, wildebeest, water buffalos, gazelles, impala - and the list goes on. The only animal we failed to spot (by approximately 2 hours) was a rhino and its offspring.
Camping will never be the same again. We ate breakfast and dinner (pack lunches on the hoof, as it were) in the main central building - delicious locally grown produce (they have just created their own kitchen garden which is well worth a visit in itself). We did a behind the scenes visit, and the whole enterprise appears to run with military precision in a happy and friendly atomsphere. You can be as energetic as you like (there is a simple gym, should you wish to improve your chances of outrunning a pursuing cheetah - again , looking out on the Mara, as does the camp's infinity pool - forbidden to crocs and hippos).
All in all, a truly memorable holiday, realistically priced, but such good value. Pretty well everything is included in the one-off up-front total price for our stay there. Sadly, not the hot-air balloon flights, sorely tempted as I was.
I went in the mid-season (October, 2016), so had missed the migration but, in the words of Arnold Schwarzeneggar "I'll be back" - there's plenty more to see and the story is only half way through - but one thing is for sure: it no longer needs the likes of Robert Redford and Meryl Streep to draw in the punters - it will sell itself with the view alone, but don't tell a soul..
