If it's good enough for Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, it's good enough for me. This remote spot was where Redford's character expressed a wish to be buried in the 1985 film "Out of Africa". And you can see why: Perched high (300 metres) on a rocky ridge overlooking the breathtaking views of the Masai Mara, you could be forgiven for thinking that you have just arrived in heaven, - and you won't be disappointed. From the moment you land on the camp's own tarmac runway and are greeted by the reception party - some in their colourful local costumes - you take on a sense of well-being, confident in the knowledge that you will be pampered something rotten.
This 1 year-old development of 30 tented suites, spread over two camps in 700 hectares offers luxurious accommodation under "canvas". It brings a whole new meaning to the term "al fresco".
The service is friendly, efficient and attentive, and you are allocated your own butler who will attend to your every need, whether it be restocking the mini bar, organising the laundry or arranging for a meal to be served in the tent. For our safari trips, we had Sammy as our guide, who never once was stumped for an answer, and his enthusiasm and knowledge of his subject was as infectious as it was informative. He was as thrilled as we were to see a serval cat - something of a rarity in the wild. As for the other animals, there was never a dull moment: in our 4 half days of safari-ing, we became almost blase at the sight of elephants, zebras, lions, cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, wart hogs, ilands, hyenas, jackals, wildebeest, water buffalos, gazelles, impala - and the list goes on. The only animal we failed to spot (by approximately 2 hours) was a rhino and its offspring.
Camping will never be the same again. We ate breakfast and dinner (pack lunches on the hoof, as it were) in the main central building - delicious locally grown produce (they have just created their own kitchen garden which is well worth a visit in itself). We did a behind the scenes visit, and the whole enterprise appears to run with military precision in a happy and friendly atomsphere. You can be as energetic as you like (there is a simple gym, should you wish to improve your chances of outrunning a pursuing cheetah - again , looking out on the Mara, as does the camp's infinity pool - forbidden to crocs and hippos).
All in all, a truly memorable holiday, realistically priced, but such good value. Pretty well everything is included in the one-off up-front total price for our stay there. Sadly, not the hot-air balloon flights, sorely tempted as I was.
I went in the mid-season (October, 2016), so had missed the migration but, in the words of Arnold Schwarzeneggar "I'll be back" - there's plenty more to see and the story is only half way through - but one thing is for sure: it no longer needs the likes of Robert Redford and Meryl Streep to draw in the punters - it will sell itself with the view alone, but don't tell a soul..

Only the briefest acquaintance with Angama Mara convinces you of the abundance and variety of all the wildlife that you can possibly expect on the Masai triangle. Hanging mid-air virtually, is not only a wonderfully appointed high quality lodge, but also to our surprise, a most intriguing and beautifully laid out vegetable garden, the fresh produce of which, appears on our plates thanks to very competent and creative chefs.
The homemade soups would delight even the least soupy of fans, the touch of adding orange juice to the beetroot gazpacho was one such example.
But there’s an elephant in the room worthy of discussion.

The head gardener took us on a guided tour of the lush vegetable garden, and the successful application of his agronomy qualification was obvious. The garden was fenced off with bells and thorny bushes to ward off the elephants, and staff were there to shoo away the baboons.
Inside was an oasis, with running water recirculated as a feature. Raised timber beds are omnipotent in most gardens, but here, the elliptical play with red brick planters was a novel joy to see. Flowing from seedling nursery, to maturity and back to well nurtured compost, all is used efficiently to complete a cycle of maximum love, care and green fingered attention. There is a large dais, where dinner could be served for a group of perhaps more than 12 diners.

As for wildlife, from ground to skyline everything is on view in variety and abundance.

Based in the middle of the bush, if you thought of how logistics are managed, you would have respect for achieving just the basics, but here at Angama, they have turned lodgeistics into an art form. Highest quality meat, and a very well researched high quality wine list. Culinary enjoyment far beyond any outdoor experience you’ve ever had.

The vehicles are all bush quality stretch limos, but not the bling Las Vegas sort, these are Butchmobiles to admire; long wheel Toyota Land Cruisers repurposed to carry up to six people under a sun canopy with elevated seats offering the optimum viewpoints. The considerate, kind and competent guides provide refrigerated water when hot, and vibrantly coloured Kenyan rugs when cool.

Praise to the architects who designed the layout, and integrated the ‘tents’ and dining facilities into the cliff top. The accommodation includes wooden floors, wide frontage glazed views, and private decks for outdoor time. Internally, the decor has everything, an enormous Mara-facing bath, interesting reading material and comfort to soothe the guest to a dreamy end to every day. Just how do you transport a plate glass wall to the top of a ridge in the bush?

Nature’s cycle becomes more obvious the longer you stay here, and following six days of viewing, our appreciation of the context grew daily. Respectfully, our learned guides have more than a decade of experience both real and academic, and we benefitted from their learning and knowledge.

We imagine that the owners have developed this site following decades of hard gained experience in the tourist industry. It is a huge success and you may never see the likes of this again.

But what about the elephant in the room? If you are familiar with the expression, this is surely the most apposite time to ask. Such was our impact that as soon as we left the Mara, we could arguably say that the location had no idea that we had even been there. But it is the elephants who are systematically knocking down the acacia trees to meet their daily nutritional needs. Over decades, the Mara has lost trees that can take more than 100 years to mature. Is it not time for the Mara park managers to develop and implement a long term elephant protected tree replanting scheme before the habitat changes irreversibly?

Dear John I am usually able to answer our guests who have so kindly taken the time to write a review on our lodge without delaying too much. Your beautiful review, however, placed me firmly and deeply into an uncharacteristic bout of writer's block. I read and reread your review many times before finding the confidence to reply. You have a remarkable way with words and I only wish I could use you on our marketing team. So being quite sensible I am not going to take you on in the word game as I know I would lose hands down. And I am a sore loser. Suffice to say the following: Thank you so much for coming to stay with us. Thank you for all your gracious comments especially about the garden and design. And thank you for this review - the team is delighted. With regards to the elephant, I know the Mara Conservancy is keenly focussed on this issue but how they plan to resolve it has yet to be shared. On behalf of the staff thank you and we look forward hopefully to welcoming you both back one day to the lovely Mara Triangle. Warm regards Nicky

We came here for our honeymoon in August 2023 and were immediately blown away by the scenery of the site. The natural beauty dominates the view in every direction, and the position high above the plains offers a superb viewpoint. The architecture is also breathtaking, with low brick buildings and walls allowing the site to shine while making a statement all their own. As we began our stay in earnest, we found the other facilities such as pool, map room, fitness center, and our accommodations more than matched the main lobby area, and the service is second to none. Anything we wanted or needed was provided, and any request we had was met or surpassed immediately. We had an unforgettable stay here thanks to our driver Elvis as well as George and his team, and we can’t wait to return.

Angama literally takes your breath away from the moment you touch down at either Kichwa Tembo or their private airstrip - you are treated to one of the most glorious spectacles of nature, and the wonderfully warm, professional world-class staff.

The tented suites are sumptuous. I loved waking each morning to watch the sun rise after making my own cup of Kenyan coffee (the BEST in the world), while sitting in the rocking chair draped in their signature red blankets and feeling the cool air on my face. I saw hyenas, zebras and topi from my tent and had a wonderful view of the kopje (Out of Africa hill).

Boni (the head butler) is a consummate professional and did not skip a beat at any meal; George, the manager was incredibly hilarious and friendly; Doris was one of the friendliest and loveliest women I've ever met at the shops and around the property; Our photographer Robert took some wonderful shots that will hang in our home, and our guide Lemaalo is our true "safari whisperer". He found us the famous cheetah brothers, timed our rare sighting of leopard mating perfectly, and took us to the TZ border to observe some incredible male and female lions. He is a real talent and is a dedicated and passionate conservationist who has taught me so much. Can't forget Titus who picked us up initially from the strip and was also incredible!

Hands down the most awe inspiring trip and a bucket list destination for sure. They go out of their way to make you happy - a dream come true!

Wow - An absolute treat to have stayed at Angama - From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were treated like Royalty!
The fabulous view over the Masai Mara was a feast for ones eyes and we could not get enough of it!
The staff were so accommodating - Josephat who greeted us, Moses our guide, Lynn are happy and very efficient Waitress and of course Felix who maintained our room - always happy to help and adjust our safari to our needs.
The rooms were spacious and extremely comfortable. We loved the BBQ - it also gave us a chance to meet other folk who were on Safari as well as the Sundowners with the Masai Dancers
The food was outstanding
Our guide had a great knowledge of the Bush, Wildlife and Birds and once we had indicated that we did not want to be where the other cars were we kept well away from the madding crowd and ended up having our own absolutely incredible sitings of a Lioness on a kill - all in peace!
We would happily go back! Thanks you all at Angama!

Dear Alex As the owner nothing makes me prouder than reading reviews by our guests where every member of staff that looked after them is mentioned by name. Thank you so much much - Josephat, Moses, Lynn and Felix are all delighted to have looked after you during your stay and thank you for your kind words. And the chefs, too! We encourage our guides to explain to our guests that there are vast expanses of the Mara Triangle where very few other people go and I am so glad Moses took you there and you were rewarded with a great sighting. Warmest thanks from us all Nicky

Good morning Ann Delighted that you are coming to stay and we very much look forward to welcoming you to our lodge. Thanks so much for getting in touch and herewith answers to your questions: Because we are only 1 deg south of the equator the climate here in Kenya is way more temperate than that of Southern Africa. Early mornings and evenings can be cool so a light jacket/fleece is recommended (no gloves etc needed). We do provide our guests on their game drives with knee blankets and fleece wraps. The days can get warm - today's high is 28 deg C so light cotton clothing is good. We have almost no humidity at all. Please pack sunscreen because we are 2000m above sea level and as such you need to take precautions not to burn. A safari hat or peak cap is a must. I usually wear long sleeved cotton shirts and trousers when out on safari to prevent sunburn. All our tents have lovely views and at this stage, I am not sure if one or both camps will be open during your stay. Please contact me via Enquiries on our website and I will ensure you are beautifully taken care of (I am unable to send my email address using this platform). The Maasai village visit is interesting culturally and a good place for some shopping! But, having said that, it is not for everybody. It is at the end of the day a business and a commercial experience together with a cultural one. Some guests love it - others not so much so. We have heaps of Maasai culture on the property here at the lodge - but it is also good to support local initiatives. I hope I haven't confused you too much! The balloon safari is a fantastic experience - a once in a lifetime. The cost is $480 per person and you can make that decision when you get here. I would highly recommend it. You will see the hot air balloons floating past the lodge - the temptation might almost be too much to resist! Please let me know if there is anything else at all I can help you with. Wishing you a wonderful stay with us Warm regards Nicky Fitzgerald Owner
