Basic resort 2.5 star

Reviewed Apr 4, 2017
I find this review hard to write as there were many good things to go with some of the bad. Overall, we had a great week here (Feb. 17-24 for $766 from Halifax) and would go back again if we weren’t put in building 15. To put things in perspective, I usually travel to Cuba and stay at 3 or 3.5 star hotels. Here are my thoughts about Playa Dorada Beach House:

Food – Better than expected. While the selection may have been smaller, the quality more than made up for it. Pancakes, eggs and omelettes made to order at the grill or you could choose from the buffet. Beach grill was excellent for lunch and the buffet for supper always had something good – pork, chicken, beef, fish, vegetables, rice and a small salad bar. Jose in the buffet is an excellent server and so friendly and welcoming.

Entertainment – The entertainment staff were excellent and tried to engage you in their activities (beach volleyball, nightly shows, etc) but were respectful if you chose not to participate. The nightly entertainment was good and not the same stuff that you see in Cuba all the time.

Beach – Excellent, could always get a chair but not always under shade – but that was okay…I wanted sun. There were more beach vendors, approaching more often, than I was used to from being in Cuba. However, just a firm “no gracias” worked well.
Staff – While some of the staff didn’t speak great English, it was understandable and they were very friendly whether you tipped or not. In particular, Mariano, who worked at the bar by the pool, was excellent. The drinks were great, not watered down.

Room – Ahhh! Here lies the problem. When we arrived on Friday, the 17th at 7:30 pm ish we were put in building 15 – top floor. This room was terrible and no one should have ever been put in it. I was travelling with my two daughters and the room we were in only had one bed. Not to mention, the shower didn’t work - the lever that you pull up on the tap for the shower was seized solid. However, that did get fixed on Saturday afternoon. Another issue – the tub was filthy dirty, mold in it, etc. That did not get cleaned so we showered with flip flops on on Saturday. The final issue with the room – there were glass shards all through the carpet on the upstairs level, which did not get vacuumed up after repeated requests. We were moved on Sunday afternoon to Building 13 which was like Penthouse suite compared to where we were. I should also mention that we only had hot water once but I didn’t mind showering in cold to lukewarmish water. Many other people we talked to in that building also had similar problems.

All in all, I don’t regret going there and I would consider going back again if I could be guaranteed not to be in building 15. This resort has a lot of potential.

My wife and I booked this as a last minute. It's been 15 years since our last visit to Dominica.
We were told this was a 3 star resort, 2 stars would be pushing it. The place looks nothing like the pictures, very run down and unkept.
The pool was very dirty and unsure if it was ever treated.
The food was terrible and most time cold. No soap, hotwater or hand drying equipment in any public washrooms. Seen employees using the facilities and no hand washing available to them.
Room was clean, but there is only warm water for shower.
No bottled water available at the bar, we had to buy our own.
The snack bar at the beach only a barbeque / deep fried chicken available. Pizza was there but you had to ask for it. All the condiments for burgers or hotdogs, but none were ever available. One day they would have the buns, but no hotdogs. And on another day hotdogs, but no buns.

This is a standard 3-star Dominican resort, we paid 740$CAN for a week, taxes in. This was our 8th visit to 3 star Caribbean resorts so we know exactly what to expect from these and were pretty satisfied overall with our stay.

This is a resort that seems to be undergoing some renos and has recently been through a change of ownership. On our last day (Friday, Mar 21) a group of big shot looking types were walking around with plans and looking at progress and you can here work being done in some of the condos.

Rooms:
We were in one of the non-renovated condos (we hope) in building #12 so keep that in mind. We didn't ask for an upgrade or anything. The shower just kind of poured water down in one small stream with no hot water at peak times so don't shower at peak times and you'll be fine. The beds are decent and the AC worked perfectly after the front desk gives you the remote. Cable isn't good with no CNN and 4 or 5 english channels with poor reception. No wifi in our room but some are able to connect to Wyndam's resort next door if your room is close enough. Rooms are old and we had black mold in a few corners but we're not picky at these prices.

Staff:
Great staff, nice people and everyone seemed to agree. Bartenders are great. There's a nice lady from Canada at the front desk that is very knowledgeable about the area and very interesting to chat with.

Atmosphere:
This place was dead at the time. They were killed in reviews for power outages in the previous few weeks but we only encountered of these for about 30 minutes. A power outage does stop all flushing and showering.

Some of the entertainment shows were o.k. but it's difficult to put on great shows for a crowd of 15 people. They were also mostly in spanish.

We enjoyed how quiet it was and how easy it was to get drinks and beach chairs.

Beach:
No rush to get to chairs since it wasn't busy, chairs are of cloth and comfy, not the hard plastic kinds. People walk the beach and sell you stuff but, they are polite. You see the same faces every day and some of them speak 4 or 5 languages fluently, amazing. We got 3 half hour massages during the week at 20$/massage/person and it was pretty good.

Buffet Food:
Standard stuff, you'll get tired of it after a few days. There's always something to eat i guess and we even had jello a few times for desert! We only did the mexican a la carte, I would stay away from it. There are 2 restaurants in the shopping mall nearby off resort, I would go there for a meal instead.

Beach food:
Fries, hot dogs, pizza, fried chicken. All decent but you'll get tired of the chicken after a few days, it's not really battered so it's just chicken in the fryer that ends up pretty greasy. It gets you by and the staff there are great too.

Gym:
I know it's crazy to most to go to the gym on vaca but we try to keep some for sort of routine during the week. The gym is brutal, no fancy machines or anything you would see in a good gym so therefore nobody uses it. We used it 4 times and mostly use free weights anyway but your hands will be rusty/dirty. There's a self powered treadmill from the 70's that works. Sad to say it's the best gym we've seen in our travels.

NOTICE TO SENIORS/DISABLED/PEOPLE WITH WALKERS...
After an extended period of rain like they had the day we got there, paths are impassable. You walk in almost a foot of water to get anywhere. The paths are lower than the edge of the grass and act as drainage river with the water going nowhere. We were fine with it though. There is poor lighting in a few path areas like around the tennis courts. I wouldn't take grandma at this resort.

Room tip: ask for renovated room

Recently my boyfriend and I went to Puerto Plata and stayed here, however our travel agent booked us at the wrong resort. During our stay here for 5 nights we were violently ill and miserable. First of all, we had to pay $18 to get a safe key for the week, the safe was old and rusted and could easily be tempered with without a key.
The rooms were bare, the balcony door did not lock, the mini fridge was old and noisy, they were cleaned daily however we did not receive fresh towels until around 4pm.
The food... there was nothing that satisfied my taste buds at all, the fruit and cheeses appeared incredibly soggy and unappetizing, there was very little we could eat at any meal. Both myself and my boyfriend fell ill the second night, it got so bad by the 3rd day that we could barely leave our room. Luckily we were moved to the Sunscape resort for our last two nights where we could actually eat. Both of us have lost weight from not eating enough, we arrived home Thursday and I am still very ill. We were also not the only guests to get sick. There were multiple people we met who couldn't leave their rooms or eat anything either.
The beach was lovely, when we did make it out there we thought the views of the mountain were amazing, the beach was not always clean nor the water but there were always chairs available.
The staff were very friendly and interactive with all the guests although some were a little unprofessional at times, the bartenders were enthusiastic and fun. The front desk staff were a little unorganized.
Wifi was only available in the lobby.
The nightly entertainment wasn't really anything special.
We weren't supposed to be at this resort but since this is where we ended up, I wouldn't recommend booking your vacation here at all. Yes the prices are very cheap but so is the hotel and it's not worth getting sick for. We lost several days of our first vacation together which is devastating as we both worked so hard to be able to get away. The entire thing was a real waste of money.

Dear Becky, we appreciate your comments in an analytical and conscious way of the service received. It is totally true that the quality is related to the payment of the service.( Value for Money). We are a 3 star resort in the Caribbean, clean, with entertainment and food according to our budgets. However we are open to ideas and working in the areas to improve.

We did not find records of your illness commentary, nor the Medical Center of the complex (mandatory sending every week to the hotels) nor of the Tour Operators representatives, no notes in Log books of complaints regarding your case in reception or guests service folow up !!

We hope to serve you again in the future, because we have a high level of customers that repeat our property.

This hotel is approximately 20 min from the airport! Upon arrival, this hotel appears very basic. Had to wait until 230 to check in but it was quick and friendly! Spent the 2 hr wait time having lunch and sitting in the sun.

Our room, main floor building 22, was clean and fresh, king bed was comfortable.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner there was always a modest selection of food, tasty just the same! The Kokomo Beach Grill serves delicious hamburgers and fantastic pizza as a pleasant option.

The main bar and beach bar serve all basic drinks, could use a slushie pina colada/margarita machine. But the bartenders make up for this with their very personable attitudes, and at the main bar, their humour and blender for frozen drinks.

The entertainment during the day and evening were always friendly and humourous!
The beach was beautiful, you could walk for miles if you chose to.

We had lots of rain and it washed a lot of debris up onto the beach, not a pretty sight.. But on the sunny days they were busy trying to clean it up. My suggestion is to walk the beach on the rainy days, be a child once again and you won't be disappointed.

During the heavy rain, the hotel had may power outages, so bring a flashlight. Also water shoes as the path ways retain much water during the heavy rain.

The ala carts are just basic but can be a change from the buffet.

There is a small shopping mall within a 5 min walk from the hotel. As well there is the Orange Market on the beach, about 10 min walk to the left from the hotel.
All prices are in American dollars, we brought RD pesos, just know your conversion for the best deals.

What makes this 3 star hotel a 3.5 star is definitely the people serving you. They are friendly, attentive, professional, caring and entertaining.

Great trip!!

Overall experience was better than places we've stayed in Cuba but not as good as Casa Marina Reef Resort nearby in Sousa DR. Rooms, lobby and public washrooms have been renovated. Beach grill has great pizza, service and views. The swimming pool is large enough for swimming lengths and quite clean. Gym is useful for workouts with its free weights and machines. There's a different staff show every night some of which are quite remarkable like the fire and water shows, others not so good. Overall the service is friendly but it would be helpful if the wait staff had a bit more English to help out the guests (e.g., types of juice, hot water for tea, a little milk in coffee). White wine was undrinkable and the red wine wasn't much better. Buffet meals had themes and lots of variety but the quality was variable depending on the chef/staff in charge who changed mid-way during our week. Breakfast grill was great but the toasters never worked so never got toast at breakfast. Cleanest windows and rooms that we have seen at any resort.
