Great service, nice clean rooms, special shoot out for Chemi from Oak Wine Bar who was so professional and courteous (3 couples) that we went 3 times. Maids were also wonderful and helpful. Nice walking beach.

Let me start off by saying that I had read over 100 reviews on trip advisor prior to this trip and I must say that certain people seem hell bent to not have a good time when they leave the comforts of their home. When travelling, you need to learn how to "let go" and relax...that's why we call these trips a "vacation"....do not put too much stock in overly negative reviews, as these people are hardly being objective. Ok...here goes my review about Playa Naco Resort:

This was my second trip to Playa Naco Resort in two years (from March 5-13th, 2005). I have been to several other Caribean/South American countries on "all inclusive packages" and I returned to playa Naco, because overall it is good value for the dollar. If you paid anything under $1000 (Cdn) you will not be disapointed. Remember...you and your companion(s) will have a lot to do with whether, or not, you will have a good time. If you can remember to unwind, ease up and "go with the flow", you will have an awesome time at Playa Naco and here is why...

1) The Resort: is situated in an ideal location amongst the other adjoining resorts and has the best beach front and access. It has every amenity possible...tennis (grey clay courts w/ instructors), volleyball, basketball court, large pool, hot tub, luxurious spa, grand hall (shows) bars everywhere, a disco and is within a 3 minute walk to a shopping plaza where you will find...anything.

2) Staff: the staff is very hard working and will engage you in a friendly manner at the slightest acknowledgement...(tipping is optional, but very appreciated) Again, people who are rude and obnoxious should not expect to be treated like royalty...it is amazing how some people haven't figured that out yet. Any issues that arose during our trip (very minor) where dealt with promptly by staff... and with a smile on your part, they will go the extra mile !

3) Rooms: Folks this is a third world country with a tropical climate... your room will be slightly muggier/mustier than your bedroom back home, but not to worry, you can crank the air conditioning until you feet turn blue and that should take care of the mustiness....bring a air scent device if you are really picky (and I mean really picky !!). Aaahh yes...the bugs. You may come across the odd ant in your room if you really look hard (probably one you brought in with your shoes)...do not panic....have the friendly staff remove the ferocious insect should you not be capable of dealing with it yourself. Bed bugs.... not an issue, nor did I hear anyone else complain about insects in their room...and yes, I actually talked to others on this trip ! We stayed in a suite (for no extra cost...must have been the smile and effort to speak spanish when we checked in !), but we also saw a few other rooms and all were tidy, clean, fairly large (w/balcony) and well organized. I recommend spending the $15 (US) for the safe, for peace of mind. The water pressure/temperature was fine and I did not hear anyone raise this as an issue. Some people did not like the location of their room and were able to change when another was available. Don't expect this to happen if the Resort is full...but you may have to only wait a few days until others leave....ask for the two story suite !

Overall, the resort is kept very clean by hard working staff (this theme will come back again further down this review).

4) Activities & Animators: the activities are too numerous to mention (water polo, aerobics,"Dominican" baseball, basketball, tennis, skits, dance lessons, spanish lessons, safari trip, pub crawl, catamarang trip, kayaking, golf, etc)!! If this is not enough, you can adventure on your own to the nearby city of Puerto Plata (300 pesos= $11 (Cdn) for taxi...or you can take a local bus from outside the resort at much less....I recommend sharing a taxi with others). Cabaret and Sosua Bay are also not that far away and are recommended as day trips, if you get bored (we didn't !) at Playa Naco.

If you enjoy the club/party scene, there are plenty bars within walking distance in the Playa Dorado Complex to keep you entertained (they play Dominican and North American Dance music...learn swivel your hips to salsa!) or you can join the animators after their shift is done and they will take to you to "safe" Dominican "hot spots" in Puerto Plata. My buddy and I had a blast hanging out with the animators who gave us a taste of Dominican partying and culture (special thanks to Yairo aka "Chicken Legs", Sammy, Miguel, Candi and Greyvi !!). I have never seen people who work harder (animators work from noon-midnite, 6 days a week (72hrs/week !!) , with only two weeks holidays a year....and we complain!!). They will go out of their way to ensure that you are having a good time... Don't be shy...approach them with a smile and learn some spanish while you are at it !!

5) Food: The hot topic in most reviews... I ate mostly at the buffet this time (boys being boys), but I went to all the "a la carte" restaurants (Seafood, Mexican, Italian) in my previous trip and found them to be adequate for a 3.5 star resort. The food was varied enough and plentiful....great salad bar, soups, fish, and assortment of various stews and vegetable dishes...Make sure you say "Muy Buen" to the omelet guy in the morning, when he asks you "Como Esta ?". I am not a fussy eater and since I am used to South American/Caribean food, I felt like a king the whole time. Trust me, the only people that tend to complain about the food in these resorts, are either extremely picky eaters or junk food addicts for whom, burgers, fries, chips and pizza is their staple diet (and you can even get those items at the snack bar!).

6)Drinks: Plentiful... and varied enough in a tropical drink sort of way...this is not a Manhattan martini lounge folks...it is a tropical resort....don't ask for obscure cocktail drinks and then take a hissy fit when they advise that they can't make it ! Order wine (red/white) with dinner if you need to feel "special" again...

7) Nightly Shows/Skits: There is nightly entertainment and the animation team does their best to get the crowd involved in the shows which have different themes every night. If I have a criticism, it was that the nightly shows were not as extravagant as I have found them to be at other resorts where the shows were quite elaborate and staged by professional dancers and performers. The daytime animators put on the nightime shows and so you can imagine how tired they are by then...! However, I sensed that they did their best to entertain the crowd...again do not expect too much !!

Conclusion:

(If you are still reading, then I'm impressed....not much further to go !!) Folks, this is a 3.5 star resort...it is not a 5 star Resort !! If you are a pretentious, pampered person who thinks only of themselves and has to be catered to 24hrs a day, then please do not stay at this resort, as both you and the people at the resort will be disapointed that you chose Playa Naco. If you are a more "down to earth" person who wants good value for their money, then Playa Naco is the place for you. I recommend this Resort to young and old, families and singles, sporty and relaxed types, homebodies and partyers.... there is something for everyone at Playa Naco. Have fun...reinvent yourself...forget about cellphones, pagers, deadlines, bosses, bills, ex-spouses, traffic jams, smog, etc and all that stress you put up with every day of the year....take this trip....sit back, relax, create lasting memories and "go with the flo".........

The Dutch brothas !

Just came back from Playa Naco. I travelled with my 6 year old daughter and my boyfriend. I was really nervous to go there after reading the reviews on this site. When we got there we ate and checked in no problem and they even upgraded us to a superior room at no extra cost as I required a fridge and was misinformed at time of booking. Our room was in building 10, one minute walk to any part of the grounds and it was quite nice. 2 double beds, tiled floor, bathroom and balcony. We left our maid little gifts plus a us dollar everyday and everyday we came back to a nice clean room with flower arrangements. There was only three things wrong with the room, one, there wasn't enough light when it was dark, no alarm clock and we had cold showers for the first few days, but it was taken care of. This is not unusual for this country as I have heard of this happening at 5 star hotels.
Pool was really nice but cold so we spent the whole trip at the beach which was beautiful. Yes there were vendors that would come up to you, but if you said no they just continue on. The food was not very good. Luke warm at best at the buffet and the a la cartes. The best meal we had was at he Caribbean resturant. They had two meals on the beach which was very nice. We were very careful what we ate and drank, even though they said they use purified water, we didn't eat ice cubes, their water, salads or any dairy products as their milk there is not pasturized and can make you ill. We also tried to eat only hot food, which ensures that there is no bacteria growing. We also took everyday, Propolis & Probiotic pills both are found at a health food store. The day I was leaving I had an upset stomach and all I did was take oregano oil (1:1 ratio)and Psyllium husks and double up on the probiotics and it stopped. Also available at the health food store. THe hotel and the grounds were very nice and the staff was really friendly. THe shows were really good and a lot of audience participation. The entertainment staff were really great and nice. We went horseback riding, on a bananna boat ride-excellent-and parasailing. Overall we had a great time and didn't want to come back.

After reading the reviews on trip advisor, we were pretty nervous about going to Playa Naco. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised, especially by the nightlife, people, and the food.
We are two 19 year old girls from Montreal and we wanted to go on vacation to relax during the day and party at night. We found both at Playa Naco. We were a bit nervous about the resort being too family oriented but there were lots of young people since the price is low.
Nightlife: Although the disco in the hotel wasn't open, every night some of the staff would take us and others to other clubs like Roadways or Crazy Moon, where entry was free and we could get free drinks. They were both less than a 5 minute walk away from the hotel. There are 17 hotels in the Playa Dorada complex, so at the clubs you meet young people from other resorts which is cool. The music is good, and Dominicans are amazing dancers!! Just don't get the guys get toooo close. The guys who work at Playa Naco would come out with us at night and they were a lot of fun....especially DJ Randy. We went out every night and enjoyed ourselves each time. Don't go out too early though....take advantage of the free drinks at the Playa Naco bars until midnight and then head out to the clubs. The free drinks at the clubs are really watered down and not great. The discos get really full around 1230-1 am, and there is a good mixture of locals and tourists.
Food: We came to Playa Naco with very low expectations of the food. We ended up loving it!! The buffet offers a salad bar at every meal and pasta, which we ate most of the time. In the afternoon, we would eat french fries on the beach from the snack bar there which were really good. We tried the a la carte restaurants but we liked the buffet best. A few nights a week, they move all the food to the beach and have a beach party. It is really pretty and lots of fun. Try the Banana Mamas....it is the greatest drink ever invented.
Room: Our room was extremely large and spacious. We paid a basic rate for a normal room and got a room with a kitchenette, living room, terrace, private bedroom....basically a one bedroom suite. Obviously there are some improvements could be made, like the paint that is chipping and the toilets that never flushed, but remember, this is a 3.5 star resort!! You can't expect the Ritz.
Beach: The beach was literally right outside our door. It was a 10 second walk away and it was gooorgeous!! We did not see one jellyfish or anything and we swam in the ocean everyday. It was not hard to get a lounge chair, there were plenty. There were also lots of activities to do at a cost like parasailing and banana boating which we liked a lot (but try not to fall off the banana boat it is really hard to get back on!!) As mentioned in other reviews, there were lots of vendors on the beach, but that is true of any hotel at playa dorada and if you say no thank you, they will leave you alone. If you decide to buy something, BARGAIN!! There were workers from the hotel cleaning the beach all the time, and music playing. The animators tried to involve everyone in activities like aerobics, beach volleyball and spanish lessons, just to name a few.
Pool: The pool was really nice but we spent most of our time on the beach. In the afternoon, most people moved to the pool and the animation took place there. The pool bar has the best drinks.
Staff: The staff were verry friendly and most of them spoke English well. They put on a show every night, and also help you to know where to go at night after the show. They are what make us want to go back another time because they were so much fun, they became our friends.
Facilities: We played tennis once and there was a real pro shop that was able to lend us good rackets and balls etc. There was also a basketball court that was always being used. There is mini golf on-site but it didn't look too appealing. There are two beach volleyball courts.
Be careful: don't forget your 20$ airport tax for your return flight. We thought we would be able to get money from the ATM at the plaza for that, but the ATMs didn't accept our debit cards or our credit cards and we had to borrow money from someone on our flight.

All in all, we had a great experience at Playa Naco and can't wait to go back. You must remember that the Dominican Republic is a poor country and this is a 3.5 star hotel, which is different than a 3.5 in Canada or the US. You can't expect the Ritz...go in with appropriate expectations and an open mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised like we were. If you are young and looking for a good tan, a good time and a chance to meet new people, then go to Playa Naco!! We can't say enough good things about it. If you have anymore questions feel free to email.

My boyfriend and I just got back from the resort and we loved it. Before we went I was reading all the reviews about the resort and was really afraid about going. We arrived at the resort about 2:30 and we had to wait till 3:00 To check in which wasn't bad. We got to our very large room that had a kitchen, living room, great view and large bedroom. We were surprised at how big our room was. Our room did not smell and the shower was hot everynight just like I like it. The maids cleaned the room every day. They stocked the fridge with a gallon of water, soda and a bottle of rum. The beach area was a amzing place, the view as great, although there was a lot of coral coming in from water. The beach bar was great. The pool area is so beautiful but beware the water it's so cold. There is a photographer who takes your picture and you can buy it if you want. After I read all the reviews about the food and how you should watch what you eat and that the food wasn't so good made me nervous, But after I ate my first bite my boyfriend and I were hooked. The Breakfast buffet was our favorite. The french toast, eggs and bacon were our favorite. The fresh bread was so soft and the drinks taste like they were fresh squezzed. The lunch was great we ate pizza and french fries becuase the pizza was so addicting. Dinner was great and they DID NOT have the same thing everynight. There were different themes every night they had mexican, seafood, spanish and there cultures food throughout the week. There were three restaurants at the resort that you had to make reservations all were open every night we ate at the carribean grill. We loved it the food was so good. Our all time there we didn't get sick and we didn't take anything before or after we ate. The entertainment staff was amazing they were all so nice, friendly and funny. They had a resort dance that they taught to everyone and we would do the dance every where. I won BINGO and my boyfriend and I won the Ideal couple contest which was so fun, for winning they gave us a free massage at the spa. There are so many things to do at the resort we went parasailing, jet sking and snorkeling. It was so much fun. when we were trying to find a good company to take us to Paradise Island were you go snorkeling there were a lot of different prices that ranged from $45 per person-$85 per person.Luckily I met a nice lady who just moved to DR and she informed me to go with the cheap group because all the different companies go to the exact same place. We took her advice and went with the cheaper company and had a blast. Paradise Island was amazing and beautiful. Everynight my boyfriend and I went clubbing. There were four clubs that were about a 5 min. walk from the resort and three out of the four was free to get in. We had a great time the music was great and the people were great. There was also a mall that was right around the clubs that was good. Our last night at the resort they had dinner on the beach which I thought was so romantic. We did not want to leave because we had such a good time. Although all the reviews we read about this resort were bad reviews I hope that someone who is thinking about going to this resort finds my review helpful because it is truly a great place. My boyfriend and I are going back.

Remember, you get what you pay for. I've travelled the Caribbean, Mexico, and Cuba so I think I have a fairly good perception of quality lodging. First off the resort itself. Beautiful.

Grounds: were exceptionally clean. Employees were out every morning between 6-9am keeping the beaches, grounds clean. The pool was beautiful as well.

Entertainment: Pretty bad. The shows were generally not very interesting but I must say, the staff try very hard. The work with what they have and its not very much. If you have nothing to do and are bored, go and see a show but don't expect a vegas style show.

Beach: We walked about 2 kms on either side of our beach and the Playa Naco definitely had the best one. The beach was clean, weed free and had an abundance of chairs to lie out on.

Rooms: As with most reviews, this was a problem (Building #13). My wife and I initially had a room with two double beds. This room was very outdated and smelled of mould. The toilet worked fine but we could hear the water running 24/7. The A/C worked, but it sounded like a tank and would keep you up all night. The maids cleaned the rooms well and usually before 1pm. Although our brochure stated the refrigerator was filled with beer and water, we never saw a single beer even after numerous requests in spanish and a few "gifts and tips". I highly recommend you bring "Fabreeze" or an air freshner with you to get rid of that terrible mouldy smell, other rooms had it too.
After speaking with management, we moved to a renovated room (Building #14).

Food: I thought it was good and above average. There are three restaurants for dinner as well as the Buffet. On arrival, book the Caribbean restaurant for dinner. It was excellent. The Mexican restaurant was good as well but be ready for traditional mexican food, not the watered down americanized version. The Italian restaurant was a bit weak. It was buffet style and not overly flavourful. Suprisingly, I found the buffet dinners were very good. Each night had a theme. I was never sick, nor did I hear of others getting sick. Take other reviewers comments about food and sickness in stride. Many factors affect one's sickness. Viruses are all over in this warm weather. Add hot sun, sun stroke, sun birn, over drinking of sweet tropical drinks and rum, over eating of foods we would normally never eat. All those together are a recipe for cramps and stomach sickness. Unfortunately people tend to blame their meals on this. Bring the usual amodium, tums, gravol and you should be just fine.

Service: I found it t be good at times and bad at times. Overall the staff were very friendly but don't speak very much english. Remember you are a guest in "their" country so don't be insulted if they have a hard time with your forein language.

Tips: Bring a thermal mug, I didn't but should have. It comes in handy at the beach bar. Bring small gifts such as toothbrushes, old Tshirts, sweets, pens, crayons. The Dominican people are not well off and appreciate everything. Bring lots of one dollar u.s bills with you for tips. They work as well as pesos for tipping. Television remote controls are at the front desk and are free if you ask for them. Horseback riding is included by the beach and is free but you need to sign up for it. Many people were not aware of this.

Shopping: The local plaza has lots, but it was expensive. The best buys in the Dominican are rum, cigars, vanilla, coffee, artwork. Go on some excursions to Sosua or Puerto Plata and shop there. Also, on departure at the airport they have a large duty free shopping wing. Great deals on international alcohol, perfumes, real cigars, gifts. We bought quite a bit here. If you are planning to go out on your own to various towns, don't take the tourist taxi. Walk about 15 minutes out of the resort area to the main roads and take a city taxi or one of their mini van taxi services. They crammed 22 people in our mini van and it cost me 100 pesos. It was lots of fun, cheap and you experience a bit of their culture. If you do take a taxi, negotiate the price to wherever you are going before you arrive. We didn't and he tried to up the fare by 300 %. We argued for a while until I encouraged him to flag down the police and he drove off.

Hi everyone,

First you gotta keep in mind that we went to Playa Naco because of the low price first and not because we really chose it. This is a place for value customers. The place is really great. The gardens are awesome ( like most of the places, but still really great ), the beach is better than I thought, 4 tennis courts which is nice. The only thing I didnt like was the room with no balcony and toilet not flushing but GO RIGHT AFTER YOUR CHECK IN and they will give you another one. The meal was good, my favorite was the maxican restaurant but it depend on your taste. The room service is awesome ( really clean ) but they dont speak a single word of english so learn your spanish or you WON'T have facial towel lol.

So to resume:

Pros: Nice Garden and pool. Great food ( restaurant and buffet). Nice tennis and golf. 2 casinos at 5 mins of walk for the gambler. Beach is B+. Nice gym and coffee.

Cons: Service is not always the best. No chair or towel if you are too late at the beach. Some people have problem with their room. No more bars open after 12AM. Should be 2AM or something.

Recommandation:
- Do the Outback Safari and be sure you go to the waterfall if you want an extreme experience. Sliding and jumping in 20" waterfall. Don't buy it from your representative. Be sure you don't pay more than 40$ per person on the beach.
- Bring a big termos because glasses are small.
- Bring alot of $US$ or activate the cash advance on your visa to be able to have US and not monopoly money ( Pesos ).
- Go one night to the Alfresco restaurant juste 2 mins walk to the hotel. Its expensive but you will eat the best seafood in your entire LIFE.
-Bring your cellphone if you want to call while your stay, it will be cheaper than their phones.
- Tip a guy named " Danny " at the buffet. He is very kind and will give you the best service. See the pictures below to reconize him.

This is the worst "resort" I've ever experienced. The hotel staff is ok but do not, I repeat do not complain. The moment you do, the front desk will treat you very poorly. The front desk staff are liars & will steal your money. Pretend like you don't speak Spanish & you'll be shocked. The rooms are ok if you don't mind bugs crawling everywhere. They'll over you an upgrade but they'll tell you the rooms are for members only but they don't mind asking you to pay $200 extra, it's not worth it. Do not do it. Use that money to stay anywhere else. I was tricked into staying here by a forest beach club promotion fax that I received at work. When you look online, the reviews & pictures are ok. When you get there, clearly they took a picture of the one & only model room that they have. You will have to ask for room cleaning & hopefully they'll have towels. You will starve to death once you see the buffet. Bugs, flies, gnats along with old reused food. Not a joke, I'm very serious. I have pictures... They will not refund your money by any means. The manager /owner or whatever he is used profanity, said get out of my hotel & hung up in my Spanish speaking friends face after she cried & complained about the conditions. There is so much more to say but not enough space. Do not stay here!!!

I have been to the area 4 times now and this resort was defiantly number one for value minded travelers.

Our check in was at 11:30am Monday Jan 16th and went very well, rooms were immediately available although the signs indicates check is at 3pm. Our room was great, tile floors, no carpets, no mould (I have an allergy so trust me I know). A nice feature was the mini fridge available for all guests. We had 3 rooms total, only one superior, all had the fridge. Our maid kept things spic and span, damp mopping the floors daily. The sheets were fresh and clean. It is true we played the hot water lottery every night, some nights the shower was luke-warm, others hot and a couple cold. We were not complaining however, just happy to be someplace warm.

Tennis courts are well maintained and equipment is available, games room is nice we used it almost every evening for table tennis, pool or (foosball?) before dinner. The pool is cold but lots of sun chairs. During fall 2005 renovation in-pool bar was removed, we mentioned this to our travel company as the advertising said there was one. They explained they had not been informed of the change until after it happened. Even still there is a bar very close by; you just get to stay dry while having that drink.

The Mexican restaurant was excellent, have the chicken fajitas and say hello to Luis! Caribbean was great also, we recommend the steak and stuffed fillet. Skip the Italian; pasta at the buffet is much better. There is a lunch place at the beach serving hotdogs, hamburgers, fries and pizza for those who do not fancy walking to the buffet. It was OK, I liked the fries anyway.

The animation team were disorganized but the shows were fun and activities kept us busy enough. You can get your own basketball or volleyball at the beach and organize your own game anytime you want. That was our only real issue, everyday you have to go to the beach to get towels and sign out equipment even if you plan to use it in the pool area. They should consider a second location. The Jacuzzi is warm not hot, but in that weather we enjoyed it, whole wants to boil while they broil J very clean and well maintained with regular chlorine and cleaning. The beach was wonderful, with the wind the waves were quite rough but who can control the weather. Further down the beach at the 5 star they had a bug problem but we were good because the open style of the resort and large beachfront allowed the wind to move through and keep them away. Also they posted a notice regarding spraying for insects, it is done bi-weekly.

Overall we had a great week, had 3 newbie travellers with me who thought it was the greatest experience of their lives. I would return to this resort, especially if the price is right. We paid $705 with tax $969 CDN from Ottawa direct.

I went to Playa Naco Beach Resort from April 16th- April 23rd 2005 with my mom and sister and overall I have to say that I had an amazing time.

The first thing that I would like to comment on is the entertainment staff (especially chicken legs and Sammy), they went above and beyond to make sure everyone was always having a good time. They were there first thing in the morning when we got up and were still there when we went back to our room at night, the whole week that we stayed at this resort. They were easy to talk to and enjoyed carrying on with everyone (especially the girls). The shows that they put on were usually really good, sometimes they tended to be a little lame but the guys did there best to make everyone laugh.

People have to remember here that they are staying at a 3 1/2 star hotel not a 5 star. We found the rooms to be quite comfortable, we ended up having to switch rooms because out first room had a leak but they switched us right away without hesitation. The room that we had was very large and very clean. It was cleaned on a daily basis and the housekeeping service that we had did an expectional job besides the fact that we never got enough towels. I think the only thing that could have been improved in the rooms would be to have better lighting.

The food was not overly impressive but that could also be because I am a fussy eater. Lunch and Supper there wasn't usually a whole lot that I liked because I found alot of the food had an odd taste to it, but I got through it. Breakfast however was the best meal, they had really good pancakes and french toast and the omlette guy was the best.

The grounds area (pool, beach, etc) was kept extremely clean and there was ALWAYS people cleaning up and making them look that much better.

One suggestion I would have for the front desk employees would be to try and speak a little better english, cause it was quite hard to communicate with them at times.

Overall we had an amazing stay at Playa Naco and would recommend it to anyone that planned on travelling to Domincan.

I am not sure what happened. You cannot book a trip with any site. Very odd. We had a great time there. It's a shame. We wanted to go back this month but booked elsewhere.
