Pinterest has entered a new advertising partnership with Google to expand its third-party ad integrations, making Google the second third-party ad partner after Amazon.​ ​ This collaboration aims to enhance Pinterest's ad revenue by enabling ads from Google’s Ads Manager to be served on Pinterest. This setup will direct users to complete purchases directly on the platform upon encountering relevant ads. Of late, when I conduct a Google search, frequently at the top of my results are several paragraphs of text, above which is the headline "AI Overview is Experimental. Learn More" I don't want the source of information I am seeking to be labeled as an experiment. Do you? Beyond my need for reliable, accurate information, there are other reasons I take issue with this degradation of search capability. For 15 years, I have been one of more than 32 million micro publishers, or #bloggers, in the U.S. For context, this is the equivalent of the number of employees of the U.S. retail industry, considered to be the largest private sector employer in the nation. While concrete data on the number of professional bloggers is hard to find, according to one survey, 50% of U.S. bloggers polled consider blogging their full-time career. According to another survey, the average annual income for a blogger is $52k per year. Needless to say, the ability to have a website found online is essential to developing a readership, and to making money. Alas, since last September, Google has been making a series of what it calls "Helpful Content Updates". These algorithm changes are related to its search function (and presumably its AI experiment) and have dramatically minimized exposure for blogs in search results. Most of the search results I receive lately yield the aforementioned AI experiment, generally followed by a number of paid ads, followed by multiple snippets for Reddit and Quora posts. The upshot? If you have authoritative information on a subject, it may well never be seen. In that vein, today I searched for the words "cultural traditions". The top result was the AI experiment, followed by a link to a commercial translation site, which happens to have a DA (Domain Authority) of 42. The AI experiment copied verbatim some of the language from the translation page. What came in 2nd you might ask? A 2023 piece from the The New York Times entitled "What Cultural Traditions Are Important to You?" The NYT has a DA of 95. At #3? A 2022 article entitled "American culture: Traditions and customs of the United States" from Live Science, with a DA of 92. #4 was the Wikipedia entry for "tradition". Wiki has DA of 93. And at #5? An article from a luxury Spanish tourism company on "Top Mexican culture and traditions". This site has a DA of 70. Would these results have been helpful to you in a search on "cultural traditions"? There has been a lot of coverage on the impact of #AI on the world's news organizations. Less known is that there are also potentially about 16 million American micro publishers (bloggers) who have lost their source of income due to this "helpful" update. For most of the current US advertising market, using Programmatic for CTV is just non sense. For most of current users composed mostly of traditional TV native brand advertisers, wanting to spend budgets on dead simple targets, Programmatic feels like an overkill, culminating with its oxymoronic form, Programmatic Guaranteed. Google announced the rollout of new generative AI capabilities for Demand Gen campaigns in Google Ads today, as reported by Search Engine Journal. “The AI-powered creative features aim to enhance visual storytelling to help brands generate new demand across Google’s platforms, including YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Discover, and Gmail.” I can certainly see the benefit in helping smaller businesses with less creative budget compete with more established big-budget brands who have a catalog of flashy creatives. I have been telling anyone who would listen for the last 4 years, that Upfronts will be moving to programmatic at some point. I believe the role in the SSPs is to provide the solution between the Marketers needs (flexibility in budget, transparency, ease of activation, fluidity between publishers, reporting, etc.) and the publishers needs (forecasting dependency, yield management, reservation carve outs, compliance assurance, etc.) I understand that building something that addresses all of these needs is a tall order and a big investment. I’ve had a vision for a product functionality that I tried to bring to life for 4 years and at every place I’ve worked on it, I’m always met with a list of hurdles that exist. But I think that’s the point. These hurdles are the problem with fully making upfronts go all in on programmatic. The fragmentation still exists, the lack of ease of use, the overall buy-in, the mentality of ‘why build something so far in advance when we aren’t being asked.’ These keep advancements at bay. My hope is that in the near future we can move from the outdated traditional upfront process (transaction process) and move to a more modern, flexible, and transparent process supported by the programmatic infrastructure players. To be clear— I have yet to pitch the idea to my current employer, so the above does not represent their sentiment or opinions. ☺️ Sorry to be so ‘upfront’ about this…😉

Big news coming out of Googles New Fronts! See below: ⚫ Google will be granting the IAB Tech lab access to the Publisher Advertiser Identity Reconciliation (PAIR) protocol. This will help publishers & networks increase durability of their 1st party audiences in preparation for the eventual cookieless future. This also allows buyers on DV360 to effectively target audiences on Disney & NBCU properties. ⚫ DV360 will have a new set of AI tools integrated directly in-platform to help make video buying more efficient and impactful. Further enhancements on custom bidding is also on the way in addition to increased CTV signals! Personally, I hope the new CTV signals include and solve for the following: ▪ Support oRTB 2.6 , which will allow buyers to report, optimize and cherry pick streaming ad slots based on predictability of hitting performance objective (Pod bidding). ▪ Increase Episodic, Content, Genre level reporting ▪ More Robust bid request / Auction signals for CTV PMP & PG deal health troubleshooting https://lnkd.in/ebnKKx8X).
