❗ Upcoming Lunch & Learn ❗ Wildfire and Public Health: Barriers and Opportunities to State Policy Implementation 🔥 Wildfire smoke presents a population-wide health risk in California with significant environmental justice implications. However, the policy landscape addressing the public health impacts of wildfire remains siloed, posing challenges to integrated policy development and implementation. Join us on Zoom on July 17th for a discussion about the wildfire and public health policy landscape, based on the findings of a scoping report conducted by CLEE and the Climate & Wildfire Institute. Report author and CLEE fellow Kasia Dahlbeck will discuss the results of the report, including key recommendations for coordinated policy action and future research. Following this presentation, Patrick Wright, Director of the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force, and Julia Stein, Deputy Director of the UCLA Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, will join moderator and CLEE Executive Director Louise Bedsworth in a discussion of state policy implementation on the public health impacts of wildfire, addressing key policy barriers and opportunities for building resilience and protecting the state’s public health. Pleased to announce I have joined the 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 FEMA & the U.S. Fire Administration have established for updating national wildfire evacuation standards & developing Temporary Fire Refuge Areas (TFRA) for wildfire evacuation during no-notice events. This will enable the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council to contribute to this critical program to save lives during emergency evacuations and leverage our network of advisors and board members to engage in this process. More to follow after future meetings. The focus of the Communications Working Group will be: Communications and Messaging • Preparing the public o Effective and consistent plain language messaging o Communicating consistently across jurisdictions • Driving public action o Vehicles to communicate across multiple mediums o Effective and clear directions on what to do/where to go o Identifying and including trusted messengers Grateful to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), FEMA and the US Fire Administration for prioritizing and leading this essential program. Looking forward to Justin Ángel Knighten's leadership of this workgroup. #wildfire Kevin Sofen Kevin Conant Kirk McKinzie Jacy Hyde, PhD Genevieve Biggs Christopher Anthony Laura Blaul Ilkay Altintas, Ph.D. Andrea Santy Daniel Berlant Kenneth Dueker Curtis E. This is one of your best yet, Steve Wolf. Hussam Mahmoud is doing some of the most important work in the built environment and using Graph Theory to predict wildfire prorogation in built environments. He was a guest of mine a few years back at one of the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council board meeting to share is work.

Want to learn how vastly more efficient fire modeling will protect entire communities? CSU’s Dr. Hussam Mahmoud, recipient of grants from NIST and the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, explains how he broke free from the limits of incremental thinking, and into the realm of incredible progress.
