To deepen our understanding of today's rapidly changing landscape of violent conflict, we must look to the past. At the recent #SecurityinContext conference at UC Santa Barbara, I had the privilege of exploring the field-shaping legacies of the Social Science Research Council-MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Program on International Peace and Security (1982-2002) with former IPS fellows and committee members, alongside UCSB Dean Charlie Hale. This program's support for granular, context-based research in conflict areas was formative for individual scholarly trajectories and critical to widening security studies in the 1980s/90s. Let's aim for a similarly transformative research agenda to advance our understanding of today's complex challenges. #research #conflictstudies

Overcoming Deep Differences In any organization, we find differences in expectations and perceptions. Differences and conflicts are the salt in the soup of human society. Without them, there is no progress. They guarantee social fitness and rapid adaptation to changing conditions. But they are only fruitful as long as they are based on common values. Differences become dangerous to the fabric of society when these common values are destroyed. This kind of destruction of common values is an indicator of something that happened in the past? What happened, and how can the gaps be bridged? This last question is particularly important. This conference at the University of Pittsburgh seeks answers, both theoretical and practical. All kinds of knowledge must be mobilized to regain our collective strength in times of growing threats. https://lnkd.in/eMGe6bb2

In an era where scientific knowledge outpaces wisdom, I've been curious about how democratizing scientific literacy can bridge the trust gap between society and technology. 🧬🔬 How do we resurrect trust in an institution so thoroughly entwined with capital and political power from institutions such as the United States defense organization DARPA?
