Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of 11 day Japan trip. We stayed in a traditional room with its own onsen. The room was great, large, floor mattress was very comfortable. The food was absolutely fantastic, great traditional japanese food. Weather was bad when we were there (rain) so we didn't leave the hotel and we didn't mind at all. Only complaint is that there was no hose in the room onsen, so washing was done with a bucket. You could go to the public onsen if you wanted a shower handle.

What a great experience we had. Such a historic property, the private onsen was just wonderful with sake, the food as good as it gets.. absolutely gracious hosts. We were there November the cold weather really made it enjoyable. I highly recommend. A great experience.

Traditional ryokan spot. You feel welcomed like a king the minute you park the car. Staff is super well trained for Japanese omotenashi (hospitality).
The room was very spacious, can easily accomodates 4/5 ppl devided between main master bedroom with king size real bed, and futons on the tatami room. The room was a good 70 sq. mt with views directly on the forest, for those zen moments.
The onsen bath could be a bit more attractive, nothing spectacular. Be sure to go with a japanese speaking person, because male and female signs are in japanese (I obviously entered the wrong room!)

Dinner/Breakfast menu is set (omakase) and this is where your money goes! it is worth EVERY penny! multiple courses are served spectacularly well, explained (in Japanese) by a very trained staff, served in a perfect way. Offer is seasonal according to what's available locally fresh! I give this 10/10.

Overall was a great experience! Highly recommend it if you are into the Japanese food culture.

I stayed here for a night on the way to Tokyo from Osaka for the sole purpose of having a private onsen. Other hotels with private onsens included in the room were about $200 less but with very basic rooms so we decided to pay the extra for a large, fashionable room and stay in this ryokan. That was a great decision.

The entrance of the hotel was very plain so we initially thought we had been ripped off - but once we entered reception and walked through the HUGE property to our two-story, spotless room with two toilets, western and japanese style rooms and an authentic hot spring we knew it was worth it! The onsen was a good temperature and felt amazing in winter. However the garden was a bit boring and people can see you from their balconies when you stray a metre from the bath.

The room made up for this and so did the dinner - which was an experience in itself. I felt very overwhelmed at the quality of both meals we received. The service was perfect as well.

The ryokan is close to the lake and town and is in a quiet location. Would recommend.

You'll have your challenges getting to this place (which is part of the appeal), but it's super awesome once you arrive. It's very authentic, historic, and very Japanese. Its rough around the edges in places (been around for 360 years) but don't let that stop you. The rooms, services, and especially the meals are nothing short of memorable! If you want a real Japanese Ryokan experience, this a great choice.

Enchanting experience with delicious food, relaxing onsens, fascinating history, and hospitality that feels so warm and genuine. The atmosphere is special I would definitely recommend a room with a private onsen.

We experienced a fully relaxing luxurious experience when visiting Matsuzakaya Honten this week. For 2 days, this historical Ryokan Onsen treated us to accommodations and gustatory delights far exceeding our expectations. I’m actually sitting in the lobby awaiting our taxi writing this, and I wish that we could stay for another night.

Even before our physical arrival the staff demonstrated great care in reaching out to coordinate our arrival. We were a bit late for check in, and they worked their schedule around us, giving us a tour of the facility in an unrushed manner, and arranging our first meal to closely fit our needs.

We learned much about this historic compound on our first night, including its multi-century reputation as a meeting place for the elites of Japan and visitors from far abroad. The details of architecture, furnishings, and baths were explained with great care. Aside from the 2 public baths (gender separated, but swapping each day to allow full exploration of both bathing experiences), there are 5 reservable private baths. While we had a family room with a private outdoor onsen, it was fun to try the other options as well. In terms of the room, all of the usual amenities were on hand, as well as many many extras, including an inclusive beverage service in the lobby (both non alcoholic and a variety of spirits and draft beer), and additional complementary soft & hard drinks were included every day in the room. There are multiple lounges throughout the property which we explored, relaxed, and gamed in. The restaurant area on the second floor was where we enjoyed kaiseki breakfast and dinner.

In terms of our room, it was quite large and easily accommodated the 4 of us comfortably. It had its own sitting areas, powder and toilet rooms, and of course a beautiful outdoor bathing area with an additional deck for lounging. The volcanic, sulfur and mineral infused water of the onsen bath was rejuvenating on physical, mental, and emotional levels, as one can appreciate the misty mountain scenery in the distance as one bathes in the stimulating (heat adjustable) volcanic bath after showering per the standard onsen ritual. I found myself contemplating many creative and productive thoughts in this wonderful l state. After bathing, wearing a yukata provided by Matsuzakaya Honten (customized to our size and design preferences upon arrival) completed an amazing bathing experience! I will admit that I felt very privileged and luxurious, bathing in the onsens 3 times or more each day!

In the evening, the dinner was astounding, visually, texturally, and gustatorily (if I can use that neologism). Each of the 9 or so courses was based on carefully sourced produce and proteins, and ranged from stews, sushi selections, grilled & fried plates, and tastefully refreshing desserts. Some examples include fried abalone, wagyu beef, and local fish. It was equivalent, in our opinion, to Michelin star fair that we have enjoyed during previous excursions. Needless to say, the traditional Japanese breakfast each of our mornings reflected these same values, techniques, and care.

Throughout the facility, the service was without compare. Very often, we felt as if we were the only guests at this large facility, an illusion successful due to the expertise of each and every staff member that we encountered. No question was left unanswered, even with my poor grasp of Japanese, as each team member greeted any challenge with more than a smile. The attention to detail and compassion of the staff was a work of art itself.

All in all, I cannot recommend Matsuzakaya Honten enough! My family and I hope to return to this magical, comfortable and welcoming Ryokan in future years!

We’re family travel vloggers from California visiting Japan for the first time. For a more detailed review with videos visit my IG account and YT channel @momduty.

The has to be my favorite and most unique stay in Japan. I had no idea what to expect but let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised in the best way possible! Wow!

I highly recommend this stay if you want a memorable and traditional Japanese stay.

The experience starts right when you arrive and walk to the honten’s entrance. Instead of your traditional lobby you have what looks like a living room with Japanese antique decor. Absolutely beautiful! They make you take your shoes off when you enter and instead put on their slippers the entire time you’re inside the hotel. You sit, drink tea and have sweets as you check in.

Then they take you to your ryokan. Ours was Meiji 20 and it was so special because an emperor had stayed there in the past. In 1887 (Meiji 20), an imperial villa was built on the premises of the hotel, and on August 28, 1893, when Emperor Taisho was 16 years old, he took a break here. How cool is that?!!!!! Loved learning about the history of this place.

We stayed in a Japanese room with a bed on the floor and even a dining table on the floor with tatami mats, a fridge with tea set up and a beautiful restroom with vanity and sink area, our own private onsen on our porch where you could sit in the steaming hot water and take in the beautiful surrounding area. I love the Japanese traditional style paper walls.

They also gave us yukatas (bathrobes) which are the robes to wear during our stay. We wore them all day and at night. They have every size even for toddlers or older kids. My 11 year old twins loved them. Super comfortable.

The food is amazing! You will not find western food here. Our stay came with breakfast and dinner. The meals were Japanese traditional style with many platters in each course and unlimited drinks. They also have a lobby area where they serve coffee, tea and sake 24/7.

What makes this honten so unique is the private onsen they have on their property but in the middle of the mountain. Absolutely gorgeous and so calming. You can book it anytime you want. You get a private changing room, with shower and bathroom. You can make a reservation and enjoy 45 minutes in the onsen in privacy. It’s paradise! Very peaceful.

This hotel also has a playroom and a lounge room. So many comfortable areas to relax and enjoy! We didn’t leave this Honten because we wanted to get the full experience. I highly recommend this stay!

The Honten staff was extremely friendly! The level of service that they provide is top notch. I’m so impressed! Thank you so much Yoshi, Ling, Ayuma, Ana and Sumon for the hospitality. Will never forget you all:)

We went there during Easter holidays and stayed there for one night. 4 adults and one baby. The hotel staff was also friendly. Food was perfect. It’s just very unique experience to enjoy the stay at this very traditional Japanese hotel with private hot spring. The hotel has a history of 400 years and it’s so beautiful.

The hotel is equipped with a beautiful play room, but I personally do not see the environment suitable for children so small! Absolutely personal opinion from customers and, try to contact the structure. Maybe there's a baby-sitter service.
