I stumbled across the #1 ranked restaurant in Odawara on the trip to view Mt Fuji in Hakone-Yumoto region. Here are some tips to get you going. 1) plan ahead as they take last order at 5 pm. I got there 4:15 and waited 4:40 to get seated for one. 2) cash only and typical meal is at least 5,500 yen (~50 usd) 3) 8-10 mins walk from Kazamatsuri station (1 station away from Odawara ) 4). Expect wait for seats and another 20-25 mins for the food. 5) Parking lot available 6) Call ahead if you have large party. It's a traditional atmosphere and you get your unagi in a box, all the waitress wear kimono serving you. The Unagi was grilled perfectly and no bones and the rices was soft and not dry. The sauce was tasty and not too sweet. I finished all my Unagi quickly after waiting for 20-25 mins for it. P.S. Please click helpful

I visited this restaurant for the first time. The restaurant officially opens at 11am but it actually opens at 10am. So I visited there at 10am. I could park my car at the front of the restaurant but it was the last space. The restaurant seems to have 2nd car park. We had “Jou-Unaju” and “Shirayaki-gozen”. Especially “Shirayaki-gozen” is the best taste of eels that I ate so far. Please see my photos. We grated Wasabi by themselves while we wait for our ordered foods. All waitresses wear Kimono and all of them provide the professional services. I felt all things are the best.

This is our second visit and we are very pleased to make our way here just to have Unagi. The unagi is fatty and smooth. Almost melt in the mouth. The unagi are done two ways - the dark sauce type and the lightly done style. Both are good. Try both if you can. This season they had abalone done cooked and sashimi styles. We tried both and it was very good. Tip - no reservation allowed but if you go before 12 pm you likely have a shorter wait. They have English speaking staff who are capable of guiding you through the selection. Will be back for it next year.

If I could give 6 stars for food, I would. I like the unagi here - the fat between the meat and grilled skin is unbelievable thick! So so good. Process: We got our local friend to book the eel but we had to queue for seats. Which took an hour. In our lengthy 1.5 hours of dining, we noticed Japs were served immediately upon sitting down however foreigners like us were served later. Most Japanese were done within 30-40 mins of sitting down as their food came really fast. Each of our food came 20-30 mins after so our meal was super long, causing my entire Hakone trip to be jeopardised and I was unable to visit anything else. 1.5 hours of dining here and two seatings of Japanese were done and cleared. So unfair to foreigners. If only they could be a bit fairer to others as well if would have been an excellent experience. To be fair, they smiled a lot but hey, can’t we get our food on time too? Oddly strange.

Overpriced. While the eel was definitely very good, the menu is limited, the mixed tempura consisted of some random vegetables and two tiny sardines, all accompanied with a tiny side dish of sliced carrots, pickles and a clear soup. Not worth the 5,400Yen price for the eel. Seems like its more of a tourist stopover with servers wearing kimonos and greeting everyone coming in or going out all in unison. Gets a bit too much after a while.

We finally dined at Tomoei after years of saying that we must visit. The unagi is the best that I've eaten since coming to Japan 16 years ago. Top tip, lunchtimes are very busy and queues start very early so you may have to wait a long time, they have a limited number of Unagi also. We phoned ahead and reserved our eels for the evening, last orders are at 5pm, so you must eat early. Also if you arrive after 5:30pm you have to take your Unaju home as a bento box.

We tried this on our second day of the trip and it was delicious. The bento was 4000 not cheap but it was worth it. Tomoei Eel opens from 11 AM - 6 PM on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. They also open every Monday and Tuesday from 11 AM - 7 PM.

Tomoei Eel is a Michelin Star unagiya located in Hakone and they specialised in serving the freshwaster blue eel. In fact, when we went there, they only asked whether we wanted the unaju* (grilled eel with sweet soy sauce) or shirayaki (grilled eel seasoned with salt). I think most tourists went there just to eat the eel! We didn't make any booking at all and went there on a whim. I listed this restaurant in my itinerary but it wasn't a must-visit place for us. After we hired our Nissan Cube, we had some free time to kill before our onsen session. Since we didn't book, we were told that there was a 40 minutes waiting time. We said yes and walked around the Hakone area for a bit. The eel that Tomoei used is always prepared on the day when you order it. They use spring water from 100m underground to cook their food. The spring water that they used is of the same quality with the one that sake breweries use called Miyamizu. Miyamizu is high in calcium and low in iron. The Yaizu's freshwater eels are always kept in a 15.8 degree Celcius water. I ordered the unaju which came with a bowl of kimosui (eel liver in clear soup) and otsukemono (pickled vegetables). The smell of the sweet soy sauce really filled the room when I opened my bento box. My unagi was so plump, tender and butterflied perfectly! This dish was so perfect with some sansho (Japanese pepper). My all-eel meal (una-zukushi) was very satisfying. I think Hubby was a bit jealous of my dish but he was entertained with the mini crab on top of his plain shirayaki. The shirayaki was really interesting to eat especially with only light soy-dipping sauce and wasabi on the sides. We could taste the smoky and smoothness of the flesh but since both of us weren't eel purists, we definitely liked the unaju better. The restaurant is really easy to find because it's located at Odawara entrance to Hakone area. If you're unsure, Google Maps will be able to guide you there. There are two car parks available for the customers. One is located right in front of the restaurant while the other one located right across the restaurant. There's a crossing bridge that you can use to walk from point A to B. One thing to remember is that they don't have credit card facility at the restaurant. The facility was removed so they can keep the price down for their customers. There will be days that they run out of eels as well and unfortunately you can't call and make a booking. So it'll be better if you come earlier or just be there when they open the restaurant. Tomoei Eel opens from 11 AM - 6 PM on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. They also open every Monday and Tuesday from 11 AM - 7 PM. Explanation: * If unadon is eel over rice in a bowl then unaju is eel over rice in a box :-)

It was so surprising that no more eel when I arrived there just 30mins prior to the door open on Sunday. It means food was avail only for people booked in advance! So I booked for next day & came back as I really wanted to try this! Booking in advance is mandatory! However, food was of course fantastic, even a bit pricy though.

Amazingly delicious, finger-licking good great gem found through personal connection. We reserved eels for six of us but the restaurant booking is not possible, so we had to wait for 20 minutes before we managed to get a perfect setting.

As a lover of unagi I felt I couldn't miss Tomoei and although I had not booked I waited only 20 minutes or so. And the unagi was As I had hoped: superb. Totemo oishikatta desu. However, one advice: bring cash! They don't accept credit cards as some traditional Japanese restaurants don't, but I forgot to check this. The ATMs in Kazamatsuri (about a 10 min train ride from Odawara) do not accept foreign cards of any type. So I went to and from Odawara to get cash (on the ground floor in a convenience store).

If you ever go to Hakone you must stop by Odawara for a meal at Tomoei. It's a stand alone building with its own car park and not far from the Odawara station. Its unagi is truly amazing. Excellently done the unagi is creamy fat and tasty. Not too sweet. In my opinion it's even better than Taipei's 肥前屋 and Singapore's Chikuyotei. Yummy yum yum yum!

We came for a holiday in hakone and stayed in hakone yumato. It was a pleasant surprise to find that a famous unagi restaurant was so close. We took a bus from town and the driver was kind enough to point out the unprepossessing building housing tomoei. We were fortunate to come early and have a really lovely lady take our orders in English. After waiting a few minutes, we were shown into a lovely room with beautiful furnishings. The eel dishes were deserving of their fame and praise. I had the white version whilst my wife shared the traditional version with my daughter.

I arrived just before 5pm on Monday and the restaurant was near empty with only two tables of people. They also asked me if I had bookings but they still let me in though I didn't book. The eel was really soft and the sauce, unlike the other eels I had, was not stronger than the eel. It's absolutely the best I had. I tried to order abalone but they said it was sold out! Contrary to what I believed, it was quite filling after such a small box of rice and eel. A must-visit restaurant if you like eels. The restaurant is opposite to Denny's and next to Lawson. The sign is white in colour.
