- jjlukeCalgary, Canada1,758 contributionsThe journey matters and it is an awesome one!The Hakone Ropeway is an experience unto itself. First you take an old school switchback train up the mountain. Then you take a unique cable car up, and finally the ropeway (gondola) where you go over Hakone, Mt. Fuji in the distance and some neat sulphur spots. Finally you take a pirate-style ship over back to the town area. A very cool experience but do note that the cost of this is separate from your JR Rail Pass, but we felt the entire package was totally worth it for the experience. Highly recommend checking it out for the sites and experiences. If you found this helpful, please indicate with thumbs up so I know where to focus my future review efforts!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 21, 2023
- NCAndBeyond56 contributionsAs expected, superb views of the overall Hakone calderaLong ropeway transit - excellent views of the geothermal "hell". We got a small view of Mt. Fuji, but on the right day, it would be outstanding. Best way to get over to the Lake from the train stations... Well worth it. I would recommend getting the Hakone Pass as it make it much easier to take the cable car, ropeway, sightseeing tour, etcVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 13, 2023
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,517 contributionsViews From All StationsWe used our pass to take the ropeway up to the Okuwadani station. That was as far was we wanted to go on this trip since we previously visited Lake Ashii. Luckily we had good timing when we arrived so we only had to wait in the queue for about 15 minutes or so. Boarding was quick and efficient. We ended up sharing our gondola with three other people. As we lifted out of the station the ride was quite smooth. The panorama views were excellent on a mostly clear day. However as we got higher, the winds started picking up but the gondola was quite stable as it was supported on parallel cables. the whistling of wind was just a small indicator of what was to come when we got off at the station (got blown around). Sitting on the left side going up gave us an aerial view of all the steam venting going on in Owakudani. When it came time to ride back down our the queue was even shorter and we boarded immediately. At Souza Station we grabbed a snack and drink and enjoyed the views without the wind. It was so much nicer and modern versus the last time years ago.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 25, 2023
- pandora mSingapore, Singapore243 contributionsStunning Views; but beware of closure due to strong windsAmazing experience. We were very lucky. Out of the 3 days of our Hakone pass, the ropeway was down for 2.5 days due to strong winds - we managed to catch it at least once during one morning. The views were stunning, especially across Owakudani (volcanic activity) where one could smell the sulfur strongly. We could also see Mt Fuji clearly throughout that morning. We would have just use it everyday if we could (if it was not closed due to strong winds).Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 9, 2023
- John and Deb KKarratha, Australia777 contributionsClear Day Adventure Only. The set up to get on and off with the Hakone Pass is very well done. the cars are clean and the staff are good at organizing people on and off the cars, On a good day it would be a great ride with plenty of views. Unfortunately for us the day we went it was not just over cast but the clouds were all around us so we just went through clouds with nothing to see at all.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,206 contributionsOnly if the weather is clear! We were lucky with the weather and had reasonably good views of Mt. Fuji after disembarking from the cable car. The ropeway ride itself is mildly exciting, and passes over steaming sulpher vents on the way to the top. If the weather is cloudy, however, I would strongly recommend to skip the cablecar to the top; you won't see anything to warrant the expense.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 12, 2024
- TCPERTHWAPerth, Australia33 contributionsJourney through the cloudsThe trip was fun. But on our day we lucked out as it was so cloudy and misty. Visibility was only metres. No views of Fuji and we could only smell the steam vents. We got the Hakone free pass which was worth it for travelling around the region.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 19, 2024
- Susan TMount Pleasant, Wisconsin598 contributionsA must do in HakoneBecause it was going to rain the next day, we rushed over to the ropeway to get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji (just barely but the best view of our entire stay). Thought it was a roundtrip ride so I didn't take as many pictures of the lake. The other family in our carriage was nice enough to take out photos and we did the same for them. The scenery was unique -- the steam rising from the ground, the sulphur smell but we didn't get to the black eggs. We stayed on the tram. It was a very scene ride.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 8, 2024
- Mellie2013Port Moody, Canada2,954 contributionsA MUST in Hakone! We were lucky to visit Hakone during 2 perfectly clear days in mid April. The gondola AKA Ropeway was enjoying full visitor attendance when we reached the top around 2pm on our first day. We also enjoyed it more, early in the morning when it was much less crowded, we had the gondola to ourselves and more enjoyable! We enjoyed the trip twice because we purchased the Hakone & Kamakura 3 day pass from the Odakyu Site-seeing Centre. Worked out perfectly for us. On our clear days, we were graced with views of Mt Fuji, the sulfer craters and clear skies. Blessed we were! If the weather if fair, this is a must visit while in Hakone!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 8, 2024
- msa23_2000Chino Hills, California1,443 contributionsWell run, but cloudy day means you can’t see much.Cloudy and rainy weather made it impossible to view anything but also meant it wasn’t crowded. They are efficient in getting people on and I never had to wait. Lots of signage so easy to follow. I enjoyed the concept of the loop. When you get in, sit by the window facing the views for best photos. If you sit in the middle or opposite side you won’t get as good of pictures.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten May 19, 2024

Hakone Ropeway is a must-do! The journey is an adventure: train, cable car, gondola, pirate ship. Amazing views (when clear), but even in the clouds, it's fun. Worth the extra cost over the JR Rail Pass. Hakone Free Pass handy for exploring the area.

Probably best way to get to Owakudani(black eggs) and later to the lake. Very frequent, goes every few minutes like a ski-lift. Some nice views, MtFuji, if lucky

We arrived here on the cruise from the southern end of Lake Asti and waited in the not too long queue to get into our gondola. For those of a nervous disposition the whole mechanism looked brand new or well maintained, the ride was smooth and quiet except for the slight jiggle and rumble as we passed the pylons and it was not all that high. Our Perspex windows unfortunately were not all that clear resulting in disappointing photos.

Offering nice views of Mount Fuji in the distance and Lake Ashi (and its surroundings) in the immediate neighbourhood, the ropeway, part of the train -bus - ship - ropeway sequence, gets you to the top.

Lovely views over the lake, unfortunately Mount Fuji was in cloud. It was really cold and windy at the top but it was worth being out there for the views of the sulphur mountain. There is a museum up there too which is quite interesting. Also a lovely little shop which has reasonably priced gifts.

Fantastic view although it was raining and also rather cloudy. We enjoyed every single minute. However, when we arrived down the lake Ashi, the rain had stopped but still no sign of Fuji 😞

Hello. I am hoping to take the ropeway to the Hakone Visitor Centre where I will start the Lake Ashi West Bank waking trail. Does anyone know if there is transport at the end of the trail to return you to the ropeway? Thank you.

I am staying with my wife at a Ryokan in the Sengokuhara area. Can I take bus to Togendai, take round trip Lake Ashi cruise, take ropeway from Togendai to Owakudani station, and then return to Togendai and take bus back to Sengokuhara?
Seems to me that would take less time than going from Sengokuhara to Gora to start Ropeway. Please advise.
Thank you.

Hi, Is it worth to purchase the Hakone Free Pass given that some transport is out of service?
Thank you so much.
Written November 14, 2019
We used the pass and stayed in Hakone on the last stop. Just the transport from Odawara station is 1500yen each way then if you do one activity it pretty much pays for itself. We took the pirate ship to the ropes (cable car) went all the way to Gora , took the bus to the Gora Park then took the bus back and it was all inclusive in the Freepass. We got the 3 day one as it was only 400yen more from memory but worth it

Hi, does any know whether can an we still visit this area ?Hakone river for Mt fuji view after typhoon no.19? I am visiting japan next week. Thank you .
Written October 15, 2019
I guess things will be better by the time you visit next week but this is what's happening right now ~
The Odakyu Odawara Line, which connects Tokyo's Shinjuku Station with the Hakone area, is interrupted between Hadano and Shin-Matsuda Station until further notice. Substitute buses are running, but there will be delays. The Romancecar is not running. Consider using JR trains from Tokyo to Odawara, instead (but note that the JR trains are not covered by the Hakone Free Pass).
The tracks of the Hakone Tozan Railway were badly damaged, and trains will remain out of service between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora for an extended time period.
The Hakone Cablecar suffered some damage, but is scheduled to resume operation from October 17.
Many road sections remain closed.
As a result of the road closures, many bus lines are out of service. Buses resumed service today between Hakone-Yumoto, Moto-Hakone and Hakonemachi via the Hakone Shindo road, and the Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus is running between Shinjuku and Togendai, but most other bus lines remain out of service.
Despite the big impact on transportation, many tourist spots have reopened.
Unrelated to the typhoon, the Hakone Ropeway is currently closed between Sounzan and Ubako due to a volcanic no-entry zone.
Written October 15, 2019
Is the ropeway re-opened again?
A few reviewers seem to enjoy their cable-car experience to the top (2 days ago) from 01 Oct 2019
Is the volcano safer to visit now? Expecting to visit Japan in Dec 2019 too :-)
Written October 1, 2019
According to the travelwithamnet blog, as of Sept 25, 2019, only part of the ropeway has reopened ie between Ubako Station and Togendai Station. A further quote from the blog: "There is still a no-entry zone maintained for Owakudani, and the ropeway remains closed between Ubako Station and Sounzan Station. In order to compensate for this inconvenience, there is a substitute bus service running between Togendai, Ubako, and Sounzan."
Togendai Station is where the Lake Ashi cruise ships dock and Ubako Station is the next station up Mt Hakone from Togendai but its not all the way up (ie to Owakudani) but from Ubako, you can still get a good view of Lake Ashi and if there are no fogs, you might see Mt Fuji. I do hope and pray that by the time you visit in December 2019 the entire ropeway will be reopened for your enjoyment. Keep the faith!

the closure of long rope way in Hakone is temporary [for maintanence] or its closed permanently ??
Written September 20, 2019
Closed indefinitely due to seismic activities. Not only does this affect the Ropeway, it also affects Owakudani. Unfortunately no word on when these attractions will be re-opened.

I’m looking to visit Hakone as a day trip from Tokyo. What’s the best way to get to the ropeway from Hakone Yumoto station? We are looking at visiting the Open Air museum first and then catching the ropeway but it looks like most people start the ropeway at Togendai and not Gora?
We’re potentially doing this day trip on a Sunday - are the trains/opening hours slightly different on a Sunday?
Any advice on best ways to cover Hakone in a day would be highly appreciated!
Written August 25, 2019
I was reading your question again and have a couple more thoughts. So first, assuming that the ropeway is operational during your visit, your plan to visit the Hakone Open Air Museum first is a good idea although I would recommend starting early and try to get to the museum at 9 am when they first open. It’s not so crowded and you have the option to spend a bit more time there. It’s also quite an experience going up the mountain riding the Tozan railway from Hakone Yumoto station to the museum. From the museum you can then catch the Tozan railway to Gōra to ride the Tozan cable car to Sounzan to ride the ropeway to Owakudani and then from Owakudani continue on the ropeway to Togendai to catch the Lake Ashi cruise to Motohakone ko. At Motohakone ko if you have time you can walk to nearby Hakone Shrine before going back to Motohakone ko to take the bus back to Odawara to go back to Tokyo. Pls check the bus schedule. That is one way round the Hakone ‘loop’. That was how my family and I did the loop but we started our journey for Odawara. You can also do things in the reverse direction but the Museum closes at 5 pm and it’s also usually more crowded in the afternoon. Again I recommend that you find out if the ropeway is operational.

Was the ropeway running in July?
The website seems to suggest its not operational because of the volcanic activity
Written July 23, 2019
We were there in April and all was fine. I think if it’s extremely windy they may stop it running. Maybe check volcanic activity in the area but I believe if it’s possible to run it they would as it’s a great tourist attraction. Hope that helps

Hi, since Hakone Ropeway is suspended, I'm thinking there is no point in going the normal route from Hakone-Yumoto -> Gora -> Sounzan --> Togendai. Instead how about to go from Hakone-Yumoto -> Moto-Hakone to take the Pirate ship round-trip ? That will save some time , right ? Will I miss anything ?
Also I plan to go to the Yunessun hot-spring theme park afterwards too.
Does that sound like a better plan since the Hakone Ropeway is suspended ?
Written June 10, 2019
If only one section is closed.dont miss. If all is closed and you can get to owakundi by bus. I would still recommend
