This is a good location, right on Okanagan Lake. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were better than average for hotel pillows. The location is literally 20 steps from the beach. That's pretty much where the positive part of this review ends. When I called to advise that we were running late and would be checking in 90 minutes or so later than we had indicated when we booked the room, I was told that would be okay, "as long as we didn't take all night". We hustled along and checked in about an hour later than we had planned. The reason for the clerk's response became apparent, as she and any other staff vanished as soon as we'd checked in; the office closed up and guests were on their own. Judging by the number of plants in windows, and cats strolling about, at least some of the rooms in the motel are occupied by long-term residents, who clearly don't feel any obligation to abide by the "No Smoking" signs around the property. We are non-smokers, so this was uncomfortable for us. The room was large, but poorly lit. At first glance, it looked pretty clean, but the bathroom floor was just plain-old dirty. The $50 extra charge for our dogs ($25 for each) drove the already high price of the room into a range that just didn't match the experience. I imagine that the pricing is driven by the very good location...lesson learned for me for next time!

The location is fabulous. The rooms are older and could use an update. But, the managers were rude to the point of being "ignorant" and have the personality of a "dirty diaper". Unless you are an extreme recluse and don't leave your " 1980's" room after arriving, you should find another accommodations elsewhere. Also, try not to speak while outside your room or the manager is likely to complain about the noise you are making ( be it 10:am / noon / 3:pm / 5:pm etc ) while he sits there puffing on his cigarette and giving you the "evil eye" anytime you are visible. If The Rochester Resort is the only place available next time I'm booking for holidays, I'll stay home.....

Response from rochesterresort, Manager at Okanagan Lakefront Resort
Responded Sep 4, 2014
Having spent over $150,000 plus in the past year or so on upgrading our rooms with new custom made draperies throughout, 32" flat screen TV's in all suites and some rooms, new bathroom and kitchen fixtures in some rooms, air conditioning/heating unit replacement, ( including the one this writer stayed in ), purchasing 70 new Queen and King beds from a very reputable manufacturer for all our rooms ( including the King bed in the room this writer was in), and which we have received favorable comments about from previous guests, I'm unclear on where the 1980's reference comes from. Upcoming budget includes carpet replacement with laminate flooring, more flat screens, painting etc. As with any small business the expense has to be balanced with the revenues, and we have not increased our pricing for the last two years. As on all long weekends we are more visible on the property than normal, to ensure we have a good sense of the pulse of activities, and are able to head off any problems before they escalate, which is our job. Additionally, besides running the office, we live immediately adjacent to it, and being outdoor types, we spend a substantial amount of time outside, and indeed listened to the comments from the writer about being the "black sheep of the family, and you should hear all 30 of them shouting to be heard at a Christmas get together", yadayada, on one of the numerous trips over the two days on the way to the room to refill the glass from a seemingly bottomless whisky bottle. For the record, the entire family was no problem whatsoever, albeit a little loud at times, however with 20 some adults and 8 or 9 very young children that is a given. Certainly did not disturb any other guests, and we were full all weekend. The reference to "UGLY EYE " was completely unwarranted and referenced a lazy eye birth defect, and yes over the years some people have demonstrated their ignorance with a comment such as the writer, however I just shrug it off and consider the source, as one who has nothing intelligent to say, and speaks just to be heard.

The location of this motel is great...right across from the beach. The room seemed to be clean and smelled clean, the beds were okay. This is an older motel, but has had some updating. Our room had newer carpet and the bathroom had a tile floor. There is no counter space in the bathroom...none! The air conditioning works. There is no elevator and it's hike to the upstairs rooms..travel light! This is a very basic older motel. There are no amenities--no pool, jacuzzi, ice machine, breakfast area, lobby area, parking is limited. There is WiFi available. The manager was crabby on the phone when I called to reserve a room for a second night and he was crabby when we checked in. I work in a customer service industry and I find it extremely off-putting to be treated rudely. There is really no excuse. If you work at the front desk of a motel, you MUST be pleasant and helpful; otherwise, you should work where you don't have to deal with the public!

I stayed here during the Penticton Ironman event and it was excellent. The hosts were super hospitable and so into the event. They made us all feel like we were at home. We stayed on the ground floor because we had a dog and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Like most places now, room cleaning is as needed, but getting extra towels or coffee refills was easy. They have 3 great decks on the upper level with BBQs and heaters. The front one gives you a bird's eye view of the beach action. Literally right across the road from the beach. Super dog friendly! I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone headed to Penticton. Thank you for a great stay!

For a meeting at the Okanagan Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre (do not confuse with the Lakefront Resort, it is about 1 km away), I stayed here in the "late off-season" of mid-June with lake activities on the beach ramping up. I was very satisfied with the recently renovated second floor room about midway back in the building. The Lakefront Resort is not much a resort but a motel located across a quiet street from the beach. At this season it was a bit cool for swimming (although great on one 30 C day), but AC needed and worked well and fairly quiet. Outside was a bit worn but they seem to be concentrating on upgrading the rooms first, which makes sense. Some minimal (microwave, coffee maker) cooking in room and it seemed BBQs available in a couple of lounge areas. I think that during the (seemingly much pricier) summer season this would be an excellent place for a beach stay.
Owners/staff very friendly and generally quiet although some music played at some times, near the front.

Went to a wedding in the area this past weekend and a bunch of us stayed here at the recommendation from a friend and I am so glad we did. The rooms were clean, the AC was great and the vibe of the hotel was amazing. The staff was extremely accommodating and the other guests you find yourself running into in the common areas were in great spirits.
The location is amazing as it is a short walk to probably the liveliest beach on the Okanagan, restaurants, shops and various activities. There was always something to do at anytime of the day or night. I will highly recommend it for families, couples and anyone looking for a place that they can kick back and relax.

I stayed at this hotel for 4 weeks and it was perfect! The suite faced the beach with a private balcony and was close to several good restaurants. It had a lovely kitchen with stove, fridge , dishes, pots, coffeemaker etc., 2 comfortable bedrooms, a nice living room and bathroom. The rooms were immaculate, and tastefully furnished. It was obvious that the owners had put thought and care into its decor. The owners were also friendly and available to help should they be needed. I would recommend this hotel highly and hope to stay there again when travelling to Penticton..

My brother booked 4 rooms for a family and friends yearly get together. I had to call and reduce my reservation by a day and will admit I was a little worried about the response after reading all the reviews. No problem, my reservation was changed agreeably. We checked in on time, I thought the rooms were very cute, spotlessly clean and the A/C had been turned on for us so the room was wonderfully cool after our long drive. The lady manager was very helpful - I started to relax. "This is going to be great" I thought....Then I started meeting our neighbors on the first floor and started hearing the stories. Little boys yelled at for riding their skateboards in the parking lot at 11 AM in the morning, mothers having a strip torn off them in front of their small children and more. Over and over I heard "We are never coming here again!"
OK, starting to get nervous again but all was well until early Sunday afternoon. we were sitting outside our room with friends and my boyfriend turned on some music. He did a walk into the parking lot to make sure it wasn't too loud. Our next door neighbor came out of his room and I asked him if the music was bothering him. He said "What music? I can't hear any music". Then he manager came out to BBQ. He gave me the "turn it down" signal. I asked my BF to turn it down more and gave him the thumbs up signal. Then he started towards us. I met him halfway and asked him if he wanted me to check with the neighbors to make sure our music wasn't bothering them. He shoved his finger in my face and rudely said "They don't want to hear it and neither do I, TURN IT OFF!" then turned around and walked away. I stood there looking after him with my mouth open - I don't think anyone has ever spoken to me that way! I can't think of anyone who is worse suited to be in the hospitality industry.
Then it went from bad to worse....
We had a BBQ that evening and as my brother was walking back to my Mom's room on the 2nd floor a plate slipped off onto the ground below. My BF and sister-in-law quickly picked up the pieces and we got a broom and swept it all up. My Mom went down to let them know that a plate from her room had broken. $10 charge to be added to her room. She thought that was a little high and offered to replace it. My brother got involved and a nasty argument ensued. I pushed him out of the office and tried to settle everyone down but unfortunately there was absolutely no reasoning with this couple and they threatened to kick my brother out. While I was in the office my brother decided to call the police to mediate what was quickly becoming an ugly situation (kudos to the Penticton policemen that attended, they did a great job of dealing with the whole mess).
Bottom line was my brother was being evicted from his room for being disrespectful but here's the thing about respect....it's a two way street. If you choose to be aggressive and rude and nasty to your paying guests even when they are polite to you you'd better expect that someone is going to eventually give it back to you. Unfortunately the police told us that they can kick anyone out at any time for any reason. My BF and I went next door to the Crown (lovely place by the way, families and friends were sitting outside their rooms talking and laughing and enjoying the evening, something that would definitely not be allowed at the Rochester) and luckily a room was available.
The rest of us spent a sleepless night and immediately checked out the next morning. Our friends cut their weekend short and went home, my Mom moved next door with my brother and his wife. No one wanted to spend another night in that atmosphere.
So if you, like me, are reading these reviews and thinking "it can't possible be that bad", feel free to contact me through my Trip Advisor account.

Response from rochesterresort, General Manager at Okanagan Lakefront Resort
Responded Aug 8, 2015
We will address this posters review by simply stating that we have Zero Tolerance for excessively loud music, drunken partying and loud profanity at any time, and especially after having cautioned the involved parties twice. Additionally, at no time will we condone disrespect for the property, other guests or staff. Attempting to justify, as this poster did, the abusive, profane, violent threats to our office staff by this individual because he was drinking all day, and has a bad, violent temper doesn't cut it. Calling the police on himself ranks right up there as one of the dumbest things we have ever witnessed in this business, and their assistance in removing him immediately from the property was appreciated. If the posters weekend was ruined, thank the sibling.

The man who, presumably, runs the motel was/is awful; grumpy and rude.

I called the hotel to request an early check-in for one of our two rooms we booked. He was short on the phone 'no early check-ins. We are too busy.'

When we arrived at 11:45am (check-in at 3:00pm) we parked in the parking area. We noted 2-3 other cars and 10-15 empty spots. We intended to park at the hotel and return later to check-in.

We left a note on the car to inform the hotel staff of our cars. As we were about to leave the cars, the man drove up to us and said 'may i ask what you are doing?'

Here is the conversation.

Me "Yes, we will be checking in later but would like to leave our cars here while we go to the lake and get lunch"
Him " there are no early check-ins today!"
Me " oh yes, we are well aware. We aren't wanting to check-in but just leave our cars while we hang out at the lake"
Him " Don't you see how busy we are? *points to the maids working behind him* Check-in is at 3:00pm"
Me "Right, I understand. We just want to park our cars"
Him " come back at 3:00pm"
Me " Your parking lot is empty and we will be guest of your hotel in 3 hours, why can't we leave our cars here"
Him " Don't get lippy with me"
Me "Ok forget it."

As this conversation ended he backed over another guest as she was getting on her bicycle. He destroyed her bike. Completely mangled it.

Fortunately we were able to cancel our reservation and find a different hotel a few doors down. We were meant to spend $800 over the two days we were there.

I will never ever go back to this establishment. I have traveled the globe and never have i ever experienced such a terrible experience, even before checking in!!

The only redeeming quality about this place is the location, which is right on the lake. However, there are many other motels located on the same street - lots of options.

Cyn S wrote a review Aug 2015
The owners of this hotel treat their guests terribly. My family (grandparents, my partner and I and my two sons) rented the two bedroom suite that supposedly slept 6 people. When I arrived we were told that only one child can sleep on the fold out couch and my parents who were planning to stay in one of the bedrooms would have to leave or we would be kicked out. We had to beg a nearby hotel off the strip to take my parents in or we would of all had to leave. The owner said this was explained to me when I booked the room, but it absolutely was not. The owners had no empathy and said we can leave, knowing there was no other rooms available on the strip and we would have to go home we decided to suck it up and stay. The second night my 9 year old son was excited it was 7pm and was laughing and bouncing in one spot and the owner (hotel office below our suite) came upstairs and said the other customers are complaining that my kids are too noisy ruining their stay and my kids need to go to bed now. I said, it's 7pm and they aren't being noisy. The owner then yelled at me and banged her hand on the table saying this is what it sounds like and others pay a lot to stay here. The neighbours came out and heard the owner speaking to us. The neighbours said openly, no one is complaining. The owner didn't care and said, she expects us to remain quiet or we would have to leave, no guests and no noise.

I told the owner they should not rent rooms to anyone with children or any persons who may stay up past 7 pm at this hotel. Over the next 4 days we tipped toed around our room and stayed away from our hotel as much as possible. We watched the owners mistreat many other guests as well. We tried to move hotels, but all the Penticton strip hotels were all booked because it was the week of Peachfest however, every other hotel owner/manager on the strip we spoke to said, our experience is a very common experience for most who stay at the Rochester. During our stay many of the other guests expressed the same or worse dis-satisfaction as well. On our last evening at 9:50pm my Brother, his wife and their two small children arrived to say good bye to us because we were leaving very early however, the owner would not let them on the property and told them to leave immediately as it was approaching 10pm and no unregistered guests are allowed in. It was too late to get my kids dressed to go out to see his family so our families did not get to say good-bye.

I'm disgusted by the owners disrespect to their customers and I am aware they are only in business because there are limited hotels available on the Penticton Strip and people need places to stay, but for those of us who make the mistake to book at the Rochester we end up paying a much higher price of a ruined vacation for making the mistake of staying here.

Do not stay here unless you are ok with unsatisfactory service and extremely poor guest treatment.
