My friend and I stayed for 1 night at Matsuzakaya Honten and thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of our stay.

It started off with a warm welcome from the staff and welcome tea and snacks in the lounge, after which we were guided to our room and given a brief room and hotel tour. We booked the standard room but was surprised by the spaciousness and comfort, from heated blankets to comfortable bedding. The kaiseki dinner and japanese breakfast were also delicious and we really enjoyed both of our meals.

For the onsen, there was both a public and private onsen, the latter which you can book after check in. A nice morning onsen and post-dinner onsen were just what we needed.

What made the stay extra enjoyable was the warm hospitality and the festive decor. With several lounging spaces to choose from, there was plenty of choice for us to relax and spend our time. Thank you to all the staff who helped and served us - your hospitality was the icing on top of the cake!

All in all, I would definitely recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to anyone looking for a ryokan in Hakone. This ryokan nails Japanese comfort and is your perfect home away from home! I’m looking forward to my next visit here.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Our room was lovely, traditional (with tatami floors, rice paper doors between rooms, low tables, futon bedding) yet with mod- cons like a Nespresso coffee maker, flat screen tv, those lovely automated Japanese toilets). We had a room with a private onsen tub and it was such a lovely privilege being able to take a dip in hot spring water whenever we felt like it. The staff were very helpful and super obliging. The food at breakfast and dinner were fantastic. We got to taste delicious traditional Japanese keiseki meals made out of fresh ingredients.
It was an experience of a life time! Would love to be able to visit it again

I can't recommend this place enough. A hundred times. A billion times. This was my first experience with a ryokan in Japan and it was absolutely perfect. The place is located a fair distance from the Hakone-Yumoto Station, but we hopped on a city bus and it took us there in about half an hour (through the windy mountain roads, too, which was cool).

We were greeted with a welcome sakura tea and biscuit snack, then shown to our rooms. The ryokan itself is stunning, clean, well-maintained, and very peaceful. The greenery around it is amazing!! I've never stayed in such a peaceful place before. We booked the traditional Japanese tatami room with private indoor onsen and it was beautiful--plenty of room and a nice view of the green garden.

We booked a private outdoor onsen twice during our stay and I can't express how heavenly this was. Bathing in healing waters on a nice day outside in the mountains--amazing. The changing room and bathroom attached to the private onsen were beautiful, too.

I'm celiac and they were able to accommodate a gluten free kaiseki breakfast and dinner for me. It was excellent! We're both part Asian and love Japanese food, so we had no problem with the menu and will gladly eat grilled fish for breakfast--just a heads up that it's a very traditional Japanese meal. It was delicious.

We also wandered the grounds a bit in our yukata and visited the shrine. The nature around the ryokan was stunning and we got tons of amazing pictures. The staff were wonderful to us the entire time and were extremely polite and accommodating.

Will hands down, 100% recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for tranquility, relaxation, and a great meal.

I stayed here for a night on the way to Tokyo from Osaka for the sole purpose of having a private onsen. Other hotels with private onsens included in the room were about $200 less but with very basic rooms so we decided to pay the extra for a large, fashionable room and stay in this ryokan. That was a great decision.

The entrance of the hotel was very plain so we initially thought we had been ripped off - but once we entered reception and walked through the HUGE property to our two-story, spotless room with two toilets, western and japanese style rooms and an authentic hot spring we knew it was worth it! The onsen was a good temperature and felt amazing in winter. However the garden was a bit boring and people can see you from their balconies when you stray a metre from the bath.

The room made up for this and so did the dinner - which was an experience in itself. I felt very overwhelmed at the quality of both meals we received. The service was perfect as well.

The ryokan is close to the lake and town and is in a quiet location. Would recommend.

Absolutely loved our two night getaway in this lovely ryokan. Ideal mix of newly renovated and traditional spaces. In-room onsen was great for privacy and convenience. The indoor patio space was one of our favorite spots to sit and enjoy the free tea, coffee, beer, wine, sake, and snacks. The staff was incredibly welcoming, helpful, and attentive. Dinner and breakfast was quite the experience - delicious and lots of dishes! All in all, highly recommended. A block and a half off the H line from odawara station.
