Chadwick Stokes - First Concert of 2020

Last year we hit so many concerts. It was entertaining, but a little exhausting, and we have no plans for that many this year. The music scene here is just so amazing, with so many awesome bands coming to Colorado!

This past Saturday was supposed to be our first concert of the year, but you know what they say about the best laid plans?!

Gwen was sick on Friday, and only got feeling worse on Saturday. So while we had a babysitter all arranged, it didn't feel right to do that to Gwen (or to our James!). So, Trav told me to go, and that he'd stay home with her. I texted a few friends, but no one was around... so I went by myself! Not something I'd normally do, but it was actually a lot of fun!

It was a small venue, which is always a great way to get that up close experience. The main act was Chadwick Stokes... a musician I absolutely love, but normally see him in very large venues playing with Dispatch! But first was an opener I wasn't familiar with, until someone pointed out that Daniel Rodriguez was one of the lead singers of Elephant Revival! So two huge bands, and I got to see their lead singers up close in an intimate setting.

They played great sets. Chadwick and the Pintos played mostly their own songs, but with two Dispatch numbers thrown in, which was super fun. They also brought Daniel back out for a few songs.

 It was a very fun night, and I'm even more excited for Dispatch in July!

(Hopefully with Travis... but you know what they say about the best laid plans... )

TSO {2019 Concert #15 - Sort of!}

I would definitely not call Tran-Siberian Orchestra your typical concert, but it is a damn amazing show! Last Saturday the 3 of us headed downtown, and checked out took in(!) TSO for the 2nd time (Trav and I) and the 1st time (Gwen).

Gwen got a little bored during the first, Christmas story part of the show, but was all in for the more rock/light show second part.

I'm still 100% a "respect the turkey" girl, but I'm definitely feeling the holiday spirit now.

Another Day, Another (You Guessed It) Concert! - The Raconteurs {2019 Concert #14}

I'm sorry if you're sick of hearing about concerts. I cannot believe how many we've hit up this year. But, when one of my favorite people (and yoga teachers), Addison, asked me to go with him I couldn't say no! This is the second concert I hit up with him this year, and he's a fun guy to go with.

 I have zero pictures from the concert itself - since it was a cell phone free concert - but it was such a fun show. It was at the new Mission Ballroom (same place as the Brandi Carlile show), and I continue to be so impressed with this venue! We sat all the way up at the top, in general admission seating (love that GA can take advantage of seats!), and the view/sound was amazing.

It was actually a lot of fun having no phones allowed, after an initial "what do I do with my hands?!", and we were all very present in the show. There was great energy, and the crowd was upbeat.

Other then a holiday show, that was the last concert I have this year (unless something pops up!), and it was a fun one to end on. Thanks again Addison!!

Brandi Carlisle with My Babes, Rancid with My Boy, and Dropkick Murphy's with Trav's Coworkers {2019 Concert #11, #12, #13}

Lots of concerts lately! I'll try to keep this quick!

The end of September, the same day Trav and I went skydiving, I headed downtown to meet James and Amanda Panda to see Brandi Carlisle at a very new (brand new to me) venue downtown called the Mission. Its absolutely gorgeous and so well set up! The concert itself was so great. Brandi is amazing, and watching Panda see her made my heart swell. I love my people.

The very next day, Trav and I headed to see Rancid (with Pennywise). Trav was originally going to go work the concert, but I've love Rancid since I was about 12, when Babs and I used to jam to Out Come the Wolves together... so naturally I whined and badgered him until he got us tickets instead. 😂

We headed to dinner first, making a whole date night out of it. Lobster Mac & Cheese and Blueberry Hand Pies! Yes, please.

Then it was on to the concert. Pennywise was fun, but Rancid was the whole reason I was there and they did not disappoint!! They started with a song from Out Come the Wolves, so I was thrilled.

The crowd was great, the music was amazing, and I am so damn happy we went to the show.

At the end I picked up a show... which I wore the following weekend to our next concert!

Clutch opened for the Dropkick Murphys who were just so amazing! At one point they saw some kids who'd apparently been to a few of their concerts, and they pulled them up to sit on stage with them!

The moshing was exuberant, but I loved how people looked out for each other. It was just so upbeat and crazy (in the best way)! I loved getting to spend time with Trav's coworkers too. They are fun and funny.

This has definitely been the year of concerts! I'm still in awe of what we get to experience here in Denver.

KISS {2019 Concert #10}

Last Thursday the three of us headed downtown to see a concert experience!

KISS!

From the very top row. Ha!

We’re not Kiss Army or anything, but we thought it would be a fun show. Damn we’re we right. Lights, fireworks, fire, moving stage pieces! These guys put on a SHOW!

It was impressive stuff. We only knew about 3 songs, but we had a great time.

Gwen lost her damn mind when they played Rock And Roll All Night! This is only the first minute, but you get the idea!

Gwen is not going to forget this one anytime soon.

Another fun concert in the books!

Misfits! {2019 Concert #9}

Another weekend, another concert!

This was the first time I've gotten to see the original lineup of The Misfits, and it was quite the experience.

This is the only picture I got from the Misfits themselves playing, because the pit was an exuberant experience (made 1000x easier by having Travis, and two very big guy friends behind me, having my back), but pictures or not, its an experience I won't soon forget.

We've seen some damn good concerts lately! Just one more part of this whole Denver life that is so amazing to me!

Korn! with Alice in Chains, and Black Flag! {2019 Concert #6 and #7}

We went to two concerts recently, last Sunday and last Wednesday, and saw some killer bands!

On Sunday we saw Korn with Alice in Chains, and Fever 333 as an opener (also Underoath, but I wasn't a big fan).

I was super excited for both of the main bands, they really took me back to middle school/high school! Alice in Chains was amazing. They still tore it up and rocked out their old songs just as hard as ever.

Then Korn just brought the place down!

25 years of incredible music. They played such a great variety of old and new.

We were right down on the floor, at the front, so I couldn't hear so well afterwards, but it was such an amazing energy the whole time.

We just recovered when Wednesday rolled around and it was time to see Black Flag! Different, smaller venue this time. But this time we got to make it a full date night!

We went to dinner first, and I'll say, I was a slightly bigger fan of our mozzarella plate, then of the concert venue! Ha.

We walked around a bit, saw some killer graffiti, and checked out some book stores, before heading in.

 I talked about this afterwards with a few people who all agreed: Heavy Metal, Grunge Metal, and even Death Metal get a bad rap often. They call the music and the people violent, hard, scary... but I feel 100% comfortable and safe at these concerts. It wasn't always the case, but these genres have come a long was, especially in their treatment of women in the audience. You can still have fun in your own way, mosh, scream, whatever; but people look out for people, and while you get the occasional shitty person, most just want to be there to enjoy some killer music together.

Unfortunately I don't feel like hardcore punk has made the same strides. While I didn't feel unsafe at Black Flag, the whole vibe was just completely different, and it still feels like people don't really care what happens to those around them. There were times I thought I was going to walk away physically injured in some way, and did at one point take a heavy hit with an elbow straight to the back, and got slammed into a lot. I'm no softy, so it was okay, but it definitely makes it a whole lot harder to just enjoy the show!

That said, it was still a great night with fun music, and I'm glad I got to see one of Trav's favorite bands play, with him.

Sort of, Maybe, Just a Little Too Old for This... {2019 Concert #5}

So last Monday night, the night after Nahko and Trevor Hall, I said goodnight to Gwen and Trav to head out with a friend of mine - Addison (a phenomenal yoga teacher I have the pleasure of working with and taking class from) and his partner for yet another concert! We headed out to a great smaller Denver venue - the Ogden - to see Local Natives, one of Addison's absolute favorites.

Guys, I think I'm too old for that multiple concerts in a row thing! (At least when I've been fighting a cold, and go go going for many days in a row!)

That said, it was a ton of fun! I really loved the music, and it was great company... so while I was tired, I had the best time.

I'm glad too, since that was my last concert until after all our summer travels!
