On May 14, 2023, Category 5 #CycloneMocha made landfall in Myanmar, causing significant damage in coastal areas of #Bangladesh and #Myanmar. Despite the challenges, Bangladesh's disaster management efforts, led by the Cyclone Preparedness Programme, successfully evacuated over 700,000 people, with no reported loss of life. This case study highlights the effectiveness of proactive measures and coordination among stakeholders in saving lives and minimizing the impact of severe weather events. A key learning is that anticipatory action does not always require triggering Early Action Protocols (EAPs) or additional funding if those are already incorporated into preparedness efforts and organizational guidelines to trigger #EarlyAction. To learn more, check out our new case study jointly prepared by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), American Red Cross, Cyclone Preparedness Programme, and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC. 🔗 Read and download the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/epwfQVU4

Disasters are often portrayed as affecting everyone equally, but the reality is that a person's sexual orientation or #gender identity significantly influences their level of risk and exposure before, during, and after a crisis. This disparity is not inherent but results from unequal and discriminatory social norms and structures. On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia #IDAHOBIT, our #ResourceOfTheWeek is a reference guide IRDR Centre for Gender and Disaster on Gender and Sexual Minorities in #DisasterRiskReduction. By examining the available literature and evidence, this guide promotes a more inclusive understanding of the impact of gender and sexual identities on disaster risk, exposure, and vulnerability: https://lnkd.in/ek8Cj2MH #GenderEquality #LGBTQ+ #InclusiveResilience
