About us
About The IRDR Centre for Gender and Disaster is a world leading trans-disciplinary research centre, based in the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at UCL. Its approach is feminist and decolonial and it aims to employ these in bridging the gaps between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences; and between dominant and subaltern voices. IRDR Centre for Gender and Disaster reposted this
Disasters are often portrayed as affecting everyone equally, but the reality is that a person's sexual orientation or #gender identity significantly influences their level of risk and exposure before, during, and after a crisis. This disparity is not inherent but results from unequal and discriminatory social norms and structures. On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia #IDAHOBIT, our #ResourceOfTheWeek is a reference guide IRDR Centre for Gender and Disaster on Gender and Sexual Minorities in #DisasterRiskReduction. By examining the available literature and evidence, this guide promotes a more inclusive understanding of the impact of gender and sexual identities on disaster risk, exposure, and vulnerability: https://lnkd.in/ek8Cj2MH #GenderEquality #LGBTQ+ #InclusiveResilience

Recently, Centre Director Maureen Fordham and Centre Associate Kevin B. presented on behalf of the Reference Guide Team for the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) webinar on "Gender and Sexuality in Disaster Risk Reduction" 🌟 Maureen and Kevin both shared and discussed the recently developed Reference Guide on #Gender and Sexual Minorities in #Disaster #Risk Reduction with the aim of encouraging emergency managers and disaster professionals to consider gender and sexual minorities in their work. The discussion covered: 🔎 Key themes identified in the work that has already been done. These themes include inclusion and recognition; intersectionality and diverse experiences; agency; and challenges and barriers 🔎 Gaps: missing perspectives from gender and sexual minorities of colour, geographical gaps, and non-binary gender viewpoints. 🔎 Recommendations: as academics, researchers and policy makers, we have a pivotal role to play in bridging these gaps going forward. 🔎 A call to action and collaboration! 🔗 To watch the webinar, head to: https://lnkd.in/ephkgzRS 🔗 To download the reference guide, head to https://lnkd.in/ej_asNrU A huge thanks to the whole Reference Guide Team!
