Through long-term community programmes, new research and stakeholder influencing, The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance strives to deliver systemic change at scale and realize the vision of a world in which communities are more resilient to climate hazards and are able to thrive. The work undertaken in each country varies depending on the nature of the existing levels of climate resilience (as measured using the CRMC process), the nature of the climate hazards(s), local and national policy environments, and the expertise of the Alliance partner. As of the end of 2023, Alliance community programs and advocacy have beneficially impacted 3.14 million people and influenced USD 1.26 billion of funding towards resilience. Multi-sectoral partnership focusing on finding practical ways to strengthen community flood resilience
About us
The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance is a multi-sectoral partnership which brings together community programmes, new research, shared knowledge and evidence-based influencing to build community flood resilience in developed and developing countries. We help people measure their resilience to floods and identify appropriate solutions before disaster strikes. Our vision is that floods should have no negative impact on people’s ability to thrive. To achieve this, we are working to increase funding for flood resilience; strengthen global, national and subnational policies; and improve flood resilience practice.

Young people are at high risk from the impacts of natural hazards but are usually some of the least included in their community planning activities, including evacuation planning for emergency situations. Today marks World Youth Skills Day, a day to recognise the importance of equipping young people with the skills and knowledge required to address global challenges and advance sustainable development. Plan International Pilipinas is working in some of the highest risk barangays to give young people a voice in decision making and address the limited participation of young people in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management planning process. I had the privilege of attending the 5th 'Asia Pacific Science and Technology Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction' (#APSTCDRR) 11-13 July 2024, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. The discussions centered on the pivotal role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in achieving the targets of the #SendaiFramework and the SDGs. Key themes included multi-hazard #EarlyWarningSystems, disaster-resilient infrastructure, and the localization of STI-based solutions for effective governance. Was honored to participate as a panelist, discussing Practical Action in Bangladesh's initiatives on digital innovation in Early Warning Systems to enhance climate resilience. The conference culminated in the Roorkee Declaration, which will serve as a key discussion point at the upcoming #APMCDRR in Manila. Look forward to continuing these vital conversations and driving meaningful change in #disasterriskreduction. #UNDRR #APSTAG #CDRI #SAADRI #COEDMM #IITROORKEE #EW4ALL Practical Action in Bangladesh Practical Action Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance

Great to see Alliance colleagues from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC at the Urban Collaboration Platform in Seoul last week! The three-day conference brought together Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies, IFRC, the Asia Pacific Disaster Resilience Centre (APDRC) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, as well as guest speakers from ICLEI and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to explore experiences, challenges and lessons learned. Monsoon is at its peak, and disaster #preparedness is important now more than ever. Since the past few days, following the heavy rainfall, the water level in many river systems across the country have been rising. Therefore, the alert #warnings are being disseminated regularly to the communities living by the riverside. It is equally important for the #communities to stay alert and be prepared. Here is a glimpse of one of the communities we work with in Rajapur Municipality, Bardiya. The task forces trained by our project mobilised themselves to further aware other communities following the alert from the DHM and the local emergency operation centre. Back in 2018, we committed to build the resilience of 2 million people and increase investment towards resilience by USD 1 billion. Our latest progress report shows how the Alliance had surpassed its targets by the end of 2023; its community programs and advocacy efforts have beneficially impacted 3.14 million people, and influenced USD 1.26 billion of funding towards resilience. In our latest blog, Alliance colleagues reflect on what has been achieved over the last six years and how. As part of The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, the Albanian Red Cross has been at the forefront of flood resilience work in rural communities in two of the most flood affected areas of the country; Shkodra in Northern Albania and Fier and Vlora in Southern Albania. Floods have a particularly severe impact on livelihoods in these areas as most families are dedicated to agricultural activities. Mercy Corps Indonesia have developed a technical model that illustrates how current flooding challenges are due to both river flooding and coastal inundation, which is exacerbated by storms, high-tide, and non-climatic factors like land subsidence. In parallel, a resilient livelihoods approach (RLA) has also been developed by Mercy Corps Indonesia which utilises different ways of working in upstream and downstream communities. Using both the technical model and the RLA, the team have been able to emphasize the relevance of flood risk to development, rather than solely as a disaster management issue. By helping government actors understand why and how they need to move beyond hard infrastructural flood protection measures, and by supporting the development of actions that both address the root cause of flooding and support adaptation to flood impacts, Mercy Corps Indonesia’ work has beneficially impacted the local population of 1.3 million people. It's an immense privilege to work as part of the The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance through my role at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment. The Alliance's latest progress report highlights the impact and change that is being seen as a result of community engagement, learning, research and advocacy work. Plan International have been working in seven barangays in Metro Manila to ensure that youth, young adults and communities have better access and understanding of flood risk information, improved capacity to plan and employ appropriate coping mechanisms to shocks and stresses. “The training was of great help to us young people, especially since we are just starting to learn about environmental advocacy. We can now help develop this barangay into a safe and peaceful place.” – Aires Cavalida, participant of the youth training program.
