On May 14, 2023, Category 5 #CycloneMocha made landfall in Myanmar, causing significant damage in coastal areas of #Bangladesh and #Myanmar. Despite the challenges, Bangladesh's disaster management efforts, led by the Cyclone Preparedness Programme, successfully evacuated over 700,000 people, with no reported loss of life. This case study highlights the effectiveness of proactive measures and coordination among stakeholders in saving lives and minimizing the impact of severe weather events. A key learning is that anticipatory action does not always require triggering Early Action Protocols (EAPs) or additional funding if those are already incorporated into preparedness efforts and organizational guidelines to trigger #EarlyAction. To learn more, check out our new case study jointly prepared by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), American Red Cross, Cyclone Preparedness Programme, and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC. 🔗 Read and download the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/epwfQVU4

Integrating Protection, Gender, and Inclusion (PGI) into Anticipatory Action (AA) is not just an add-on; it fundamentally enhances the quality of our response. For example, increased engagement of women volunteers in camps and host communities during the preparedness and anticipatory stages can significantly improve the delivery of information and services with gender sensitivity. #HumanitarianResponse #PGI #AnticipatoryAction #GenderInclusion

#CycloneMocha struck Myanmar on 14 May 2023, causing severe damage and flooding. Despite the vulnerable conditions, the accurate early warnings and preparedness efforts saved many lives. It is imperative to achieve global coverage of early warning systems within five years. The #AsiaPacific region seeks to reduce annual losses by over US$115 billion through investments in modernizing early warning systems. To achieve it, we need a regional strategy. After a year from our relief efforts, this is the solid image I want to imprint in your minds. When disaster strikes and our focus shifts to social causes in the heat of the moment, we often overlook the fact that many social issues in the mid to long term are tied to infrastructure problems. "What are you talking about, Beren? Please give us an example," you ask. Well, let me illustrate with the dual earthquake that struck Turkey in early 2023. The damage was extensive: roads were torn apart, electricity was cut off, and sewage systems were severely compromised. Why was the sewage damage so crucial? Because it contaminated the potable water network. This contamination posed a greater threat than restoring electricity or rebuilding roads. The result? No SAFE DRINKING WATER. Initially, every FMCG water company sent tons of liters of water to alleviate the situation. However, the aid eventually ceased; it had to. These FMCGs operated for profit and exhausted their yearly budgets, forcing them to halt their assistance. It took a considerable amount of time for other municipalities to step in and aid in fixing the sewage systems. Even then, the damage was extensive, with kilometers of pipes needing repair, and much of the infrastructure lying underground. Detecting regular pipe leaks under such circumstances was a nightmare; you can imagine the complexities of this catastrophe. One of the SDG goals is INFRASTRUCTURE. Goal 9- Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. It might be boring for some but crucial for the masses. Thanks Esra Giresunlu for sharing it. #water #disasterrecovery #waterutility #waterinfrastructure #infrastructure #sdg9 #SDGs #resilience
Today, EBRD embarked on a mission of resilience and recovery, visiting cities in Türkiye that were deeply affected by last year's earthquake. Our first stop: Gaziantep. We witnessed firsthand the impact of the earthquake on vital infrastructure. A shattered pipe part, once a lifeline delivering water to communities, is now a symbol of the challenges faced in water management in the city. Stay tuned as we continue our mission to support. #TurkeyEarthquake #Gaziantep #Resilience #Recovery #WaterSector Sule Kilic Idil Gursel Cem Ocak Merve Gizay Ekmen

🌧️🌱 Did you know that enhanced rainwater drainage reduces the risk of floods and soil erosion? In Tarim, local authorities are rehabilitating roads and rainwater drainage channels with support from UNDP’s Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (#SIERY) Project. During periods of heavy rainfall, houses in Tarim sustained damages, and communities experienced road cuts that hindered their movement and access to basic services. This initiative was marked as a priority within Tarim’s resilience and recovery plans following capacity-building workshops for local authorities’ staff. By safeguarding infrastructure from water damage and ensuring reliable routes, communities are empowered to withstand future challenges and recover from natural disasters. Thanks to generous support from the #EUinYemen. 🌍 #WorldEnvironmentDay

The Somali Region Water Security: A Fight on Multiple Fronts. 👈🏽 👈🏽 The Somali Region of Ethiopia faces a complex water security challenge. Here are the latest developments about the region water security: 1. Challenges: ◾ Drought: Erratic rainfall and frequent droughts threaten surface water and groundwater levels. ◾ Infrastructure: Limited water infrastructure coverage around 40% and damage from floods strain the existed water system's capacity. ◾ Displacement: Refugees and internally displaced people put additional pressure on already scarce resources. 2. Initiatives: ◾ Monitoring and Maintenance: Efforts are underway to improve monitoring and maintenance of existing boreholes to enhance functionality, especially during droughts only . ◾ Water Resource Management: Research is being conducted to understand vulnerabilities in water systems and develop long-term plans. 3. Needs: ◾ Investment: Additional bilateral and multilateral support is crucial to expand water infrastructure and improve resilience. The situation remains critical, but there are ongoing efforts to address the water crisis in the Somali Region. #Improvewatersecurity #Challenges #Waterresourcemanagment #WaterResearches #Investment #Somaliregion.

Pakistan is surely on the path of disaster resiliency provided the collective planning translates to proactive action. Ideally more presenters from any reputed national organisations should have been added to the panel discussions for providing with opportunities that what could hinder the disaster resiliency agenda of government of Pakistan. Creating an enabling environment for the local and international humanitarian and development organisations will add value to the wider effort. I would like to see presentation to support the individual statement as it becomes monotonous without visuals. #Seminar #DisasterResilientPakistan National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Pakistan #Pakistan #NUTECH

🌊⚠️ Flooding is becoming more frequent and less predictable in #Cambodia and Southeast Asia in general. People used to inform households about incoming natural hazards in person. They would go house to house and knock on doors to raise the alarm. This tedious, time-consuming, and inefficient work is already history, thanks to our Early Warning System (EWS) #1294. To ensure vulnerable people are able to move to safe places on time, we have installed EWSs in flood-prone regions of Cambodia. After 10 years of success, we are now implementing the system in the #Philippines. 📚 To learn more about early warning systems, see here:https://buff.ly/3naaIrZ #DisasterRiskReduction #DRR #EmergencyPreparation #HumanitarianDevelopment #Innovation #FloodPrevention, #NaturalDisaster,
