The UN’s ambitious goal of early warning for the world’s entire population looks significantly more achievable after a key vote last month at the Council of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to “increase free and open data provision” underlying its forecasts. “High-quality data are crucial not only for operational forecasting, but also for developing downstream modelling, including impact models vital for assessing various environmental and societal impacts,” according to an announcement this week that made the vote public.

Over ons
The Climate Centre’s mission is to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme-weather events on vulnerable people. The Climate Centre focuses primarily on providing guidance and tools to National Societies and their partners, and fostering the exchange of experience, training and technical back-up for Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers, delegates and managers specializing in the management of disaster risk and health. In the international arena we facilitate access to climate-related funding and advocate for support to the most vulnerable people in debates on climate policy, especially the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the annual UN climate talks, but also related international discussions on development and humanitarian policy and finance. A core objective is to make the best global scientific insights operable at the local level. Key elements include support for awareness-raising and capacity-building, especially in developing countries whose people are the most vulnerable to climate change.

With her watering can in hand, Mariam Albert (photo) carefully sprinkles each of the many tree seedlings that cover the ground around her. Some day these young trees will bear fruit and nuts, and provide oil, cacao and wood for local communities. Just as importantly, they will help diminish the impacts of climate change and deforestation, while providing a vital source of local income.

Hurricane Beryl has caused unprecedented devastation on its path across the south-east Caribbean, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC Americas regional office said in a press release issued in Panama City and Geneva earlier today. No other Category 5 North Atlantic hurricane has struck this early in the year, and it “underscores the new reality of the climate crisis that Caribbean small-island nations face: storms are more likely to rapidly intensify and become stronger, causing severe destruction and giving communities less time to recover in between shocks,” the IFRC says.

Tropical Cyclone Freddy – which last year travelled a third of the world’s circumference in just over a month and embodied the atmospheric energy equal to an entire North Atlantic hurricane season – has set a new world record for the longest-lived cyclone. An international scientific team from the World Meteorological Organization recognized TC Freddy’s duration of 36 days while at least at official tropical-storm status as breaking the previous record of just under 30 days set by Cyclone John in the Pacific in 1994, the World Meteorological Organization announced today and as expected last year.

Against a backdrop of donor funding failing to keep pace with rising humanitarian needs stemming from climate change, IFRC Under Secretary General Nena Stoiljkovic has called for humanitarian solutions to be “customized and made as local as possible”. Speaking yesterday by video link to the 2024 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment (17:20), Ms Stoiljkovic said “climate change impacts all of us, but it doesn’t do so equally” – an obvious example, with temperature records being regularly broken amid unprecedented heatwaves worldwide, was access to air-conditioning.

The American Red Cross selected the Juneteenth holiday on 19th of the month that commemorates the end of slavery in the US to unveil a mural painted specially by the Climate Centre for Global Heat Action Day as an ode to environmental and climate justice (photo). The event, organized by the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region of the American Red Cross coincided with the current expanding and dangerous heatwave in the US, and underscored the urgent need for preparedness and community resilience.

Last month, Kami Rita, a Nepalese sherpa, reached the summit of Everest for the thirtieth time. Rita’s achievement, in some of the least hospitable conditions on Earth, is staggering. For Nepal – where I’m from – the mountains, and the cold, are the cliché. But in fact, it’s extreme heat that’s the growing problem. Everest’s cold and height claims a dozen or more lives most years. But in Nepal the heat takes far more.
