Suzuki has embraced hybrid technology and offers a hybrid model for every car it offers: Across, Swace, S-Cross, and Vitara.

Suzuki Vitara

The Vitara is a mid-size SUV offered with mild and full hybrid versions. It also has the option of ALLGRIP four-wheel drive. The mild hybrid system helps reduce the amount of power needed from the petrol engine, while the full hybrid has the capacity to actually drive the car for short distances. They both recharge while the car is decelerating using electricity generated by the rotation of the wheels. In our review it scored 6/10, losing points for a fairly boring interior and the interior quality being average.

Suzuki S-Cross

The S-Cross is another compact SUV from Suzuki and, like the Vitara, it’s also offered with mild or full hybrid powertrains. In our review, the hybrid version got a wowscore of 6/10, losing points for its dated infotainment, the quality of the plastics used in the interior and an inefficient hybrid system. Its plus points were roomy back seats and boot, long warranty and great reliability record, and the boosterjet engine was fun and frugal.

Suzuki Swace

The Suzuki Swace is a rebadged Toyota Corolla estate with a full hybrid 1.8-litre engine. Our review team found it good to drive and extremely efficient. It got a score of 8/10 for being comfortable and refined, feeling built to last and for its smooth and efficient hybrid. It lost points for its cramped rear head room and for being noisy at speed.

Suzuki Across

The Across is another Suzuki model that’s basically a rebadged Toyota, in this case the RAV4, with some other design tweaks. As a plug-in hybrid, the Across can do 46 miles on electric power. In our review we gave it a score of 8/10, liking its comfortable ride, good electric-only range and low road tax.

How does a Suzuki hybrid work?

Suzuki hybrids work by using a petrol engine supported by an electric motor that is powered by a battery. The battery can help to reduce the fuel used by the engine by up to 20%, and reduces emissions at the same time. The self-charging hybrids don’t have to be plugged-in as they generate and store energy that’s usually lost during braking. They then use it to support the car’s electrical functions or provide instant power boost to the engine when needed, such as restarting or pulling away. A full hybrid has the capacity to power the car purely on 100% electricity for a limited range at low speeds. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model is charged by connecting to a mains supply but has the capacity to be driven on 100% battery power for much further - up to around 50 miles in some cases.
