Edinburgh Low Emission Zone (LEZ) Check

EDINBURGH LOW EMISSION ZONE (LEZ) CHECK

How does Carwow’s Edinburgh LEZ check work?

Carwow’s free Edinburgh Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) check uses your vehicle’s registration to tell you if your vehicle is compliant and whether you’ll need to pay the daily charge to drive into the LEZ.

Our tool also shows you the boundary of Edinburgh’s Low Emissions Zone. You can enter an address or postcode to see if it lies within the zone.

What is the Edinburgh Low Emissions Zone?

Edinburgh has a Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) to help reduce the level of harmful pollution in the city centre from exhaust emissions from older vehicles.

Non-compliant vehicles with higher exhaust emissions that travel within the LEZ will be detected by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will automatically be issued to its registered keeper when the council starts issuing fines on 1 June 2024.

Can I drive my vehicle in the Edinburgh Low Emissions Zone?

You won’t be prevented from entering the Edinburgh LEZ even if your car doesn’t meet the exhaust emissions standards, however you will be fined £60 for doing so. That fine is halved if you pay quickly within 14 days.

Vehicles allowed within the Edinburgh Low Emissions Zone without facing the fine are petrol cars and vans that meet Euro 4 emission standards, and diesel cars and vans that meet Euro 6 emission standards.

Edinburgh Low Emissions Zone FAQs

The boundary circles the city centre from Tollcross in the south, west to Palmerston Place and along Queen Street to Picardy Place. The boundary continues around Abbeyhill in the east of the city on to Holyrood and the Pleasance before heading back along the Meadows to Tollcross.

Fines will be issued from 1 June 2024

The Penalty Charge Notice is £60, but this is halved if you pay it within 14 days. If you re-enter the same LEZ in the same non-compliant vehicle within 90 days of the last contravention, the Penalty Charge Notice will double. Fines will continue to double to a maximum of £480 for cars and light goods vehicles

You cannot pay the charge ahead of entering the Edinburgh LEZ. You will be told how to pay the Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) when you are sent the fine.
