About Tesla

Tesla is an incredibly young company compared with most established car manufacturers. It was founded in 2003, and in 2004 Elon Musk joined as the largest shareholder. Its first model, the Tesla Roadster, went on sale in 2008.

Tesla’s goal was always to stick to electric cars and help to accelerate zero-emission cars going mainstream, something it achieved with the Model 3, which first went on sale in 2017. Now it has a small but desirable line-up of electric vehicles, with the Tesla Model Y SUV being one of the UK’s best-selling cars in 2023.

The future for Tesla is far from comfortable, though. Elon Musk won many fans in the company’s early days for pushing eco-friendly vehicles, but his increasingly controversial statements online are turning many away from the brand. There have also been mass layoffs that hint that all is not rosy at Tesla.

If you’re looking for new models, you can buy a Tesla Model 3 from about £40,000 or a Model Y from about £45,000.

Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in California.
Tesla claims that its batteries should last 300,000 to 500,000 miles, though much of that will be dictated by how it is charged across its lifetime. For example, if a Tesla battery is always fast-charged then that can reduce its life. 
To charge a Tesla, you have to open the flap at the rear of the car to access the charge slot. If charging at home, you will need to use the cable to plug into the car and the wall, while public charging usually only involves plugging into your car. Once this is done, the car will tell you it’s charging, and estimate how long it will take. 
Official data indicates that it takes about 7h 30m to charge from 0-100% with 11kW AC charging, but it’s much more common to encounter 7kW, such as from your home charger, so that’s likely to be more like nine hours. However, using a public charger (modern Teslas can take up to 250kW) will see you go from 0-80% in under half an hour. 
Much like with petrol stations, the cost of charging can vary dramatically depending on where you charge. If you’re charging at home on a special cheap EV tariff, a 0-100% charge should cost less than £6. If you’re topping up at a public fast charger, it could cost anywhere between £30 and £70, with the highest costs typically reserved for the fastest chargers. Using a Tesla Supercharger would cost about £40 for a full charge. 
Tesla has a few factories dotted around the globe. They’re located in the USA (California, Nevada, Texas and New York) Shanghai, China and Berlin, Germany. 
Tesla has a pretty poor record for reliability, though is more to do with build quality for the interior and exterior body panels rather than mechanical issues. Things have improved recently, with newer Teslas scoring fairly well in owner satisfaction surveys.
