About McLaren

McLaren is the road-going spin-off of the famous F1 constructor.

While the racing team was founded in 1963, it wasn’t until the McLaren F1 of 1992 that a road car was made. Despite rave reviews, McLaren looked like a one-hit wonder until 2010, when McLaren Automotive was established as a separate entity to the racing team. Since then, a range of supercars and luxury GTs has taken the fight to the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini

Today’s model line-up includes high-performance convertibles and coupés. All deliver astonishing performance with price tags deep into six figures.

Hybrid power is used in many models to keep emissions in check, although McLaren has yet to launch a fully electric car.

What our car expert says

“McLaren has produced some of the best supercars of the past few decades. The Artura is the pick of today’s range – an absolute rocket in Sport mode. Mind you, the hybrid setup can be infuriating at times.”

McLaren FAQs

McLaren Automotive is part of the McLaren Group, which also includes the McLaren F1 team. It is owned by the Mumtalakat Holding Company, which is the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
McLaren cars are made in Britain. The company’s HQ is in Woking, Surrey, along with its production facility. The carbon-fibre chassis are made in Rotherham.
A lot. You’ll be spending close to £200,000 for a new one, possibly much more depending on which model you have in mind. Around £60,000 is as cheap as early models get on the used market.
McLaren cars don’t sell in big enough numbers to feature in the big-name reliability surveys and owner satisfaction studies. Internet chatter suggests that the cars are becoming more reliable after issues with early models. Even so, we’d still say that there’s a bigger question mark over reliability with a McLaren than most alternatives.

When our reviewers have driven recent models, they’ve noted that the infotainment screen is prone to freezing, which locks you out of many of the car’s functions.

The speed of a McLaren is different depending on which version you go for. The McLaren Artura can go from 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds and go on to a top speed of 205mph. The Speedtail is only a fraction quicker to 60mph, but it has a top speed of 250mph.
Nope, no motorbikes. McLaren has developed a high-end range of electric mountain bikes, though.
