Laura suffered a stroke in April this year and thankfully, she had the opportunity to meet our paramedic Rebecca Mobbs and Triple Zero Victoria Call-Taker, Stuart Atkins, who assisted on the day. Laura doesn’t remember much that day but recalls Rebecca’s reassurance and care as they transported her to Frankston Hospital. The fast identification of the signs of stroke by Laura’s grandson Jarrod, and Stuart, meant help was on its way sooner. Her case was complex and required quick intervention and transfer from Frankston Hospital to Monash Clayton, but Rebecca said the MICA paramedics did a fantastic job working as a team to provide Laura the care she needed. Stroke Foundation welcomes the Queensland Government's announcement today to invest $27 million to expand telehealth and virtual care through the new Queensland Virtual Hospital. The announcement details progress towards the delivery of vital Telestroke services in Queensland, which Stroke Foundation and our community have advocated for over many years. We hope this is a positive step to ensure the service is delivered by the end of the year and enables patients and clinicians in regional, rural and remote hospitals across the state 24/7 access to advanced brain imaging, specialist neurology assessments and acute stroke treatment advice. Over 5,000 Queenslanders experience a stroke every year. When stroke strikes it can damage up to 1.9 million brain cells every minute. Time is brain, and earlier access to treatment will provide better survival and recovery outcomes for Queensland stroke patients. Thanks to the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for inviting our CEO Dr Lisa Murphy and ED Public Affairs and Media Sarah Meredith to the launch of the 10th edition of the Red Book (also known as the Guidelines for preventative activities in general practice) for GPs. We are passionate about preventing stroke and we know GPs are critical to this with 85% of the Australian population consulting a GP once a year. It was great to hear directly from Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney on the government’s commitment and interest in prevention.
