Thanks to the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for inviting our CEO Dr Lisa Murphy and ED Public Affairs and Media Sarah Meredith to the launch of the 10th edition of the Red Book (also known as the Guidelines for preventative activities in general practice) for GPs. We are passionate about preventing stroke and we know GPs are critical to this with 85% of the Australian population consulting a GP once a year. It was great to hear directly from Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney on the government’s commitment and interest in prevention. We look forward to working more closely with the government and the Minister, as 80% of strokes can be prevented! Liam Ferney Chris Forbes

The Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will today, share with us its highly anticipated Status Summary Report 2023 on Road Safety Risk Factors for Kampala. The report will particularly be shared with policy makers of the city to help them understand what needs to be deliberated on at their respective roundtables. The report presents crucial data on two key aspects of road safety: speed and helmet use in Kampala. The team worked diligently with Makerere University School of Public Health to collect and analyze data, providing valuable insights into the current road safety situation as far as those two risk factors go. One of the most important things to note about road safety, is the need to implement evidence-based strategies / data-driven approaches / targeted interventions, and that is why we are focussing on collecting as much data as we can. You cannot fix what you can't measure. Sincere appreciation to the JH-IIRU team Nukhba Zia and Makerere University School of Public Health Businge Otto Balugaba Bonny Enock, for closing the gap and supporting the city with this much needed data collection. We applaud the U.S. Surgeon General's Office for issuing a first-of-its-kind advisory declaring firearm violence in America as a public health crisis. As the advisory concludes, it will take the collective commitment of the nation to turn the tide on this crisis. A public health approach has the potential to curb the alarming trends of firearm-related injury and death that we see in Colorado and across the country, which have devastating impacts to our physical and mental health. As we continue to champion a public health approach to firearm harm prevention in Colorado, Trailhead is excited to use our program office as a hub for building collaboration across the state and working alongside communities to enact solutions that work best for them. Thank you to our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee for arranging for Maureen Hunter, Engagement Officer at the Stroke Association to deliver a presentation on ‘Stroke Awareness.’ Colleagues from Mabbett and GEP Environmental Ltd (a Mabbett Company) dialed in to the very informative and engaging presentation. The presentation covered; what a stroke is, its impacts, risk factors and, the FAST test. If you suspect a stroke, even if symptoms pass, do the FAST test and always call 999. A reminder of what FAST means? ▶ Face: Has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? ▶ Arms: Can they raise both arms and keep them there? ▶ Speech: Is their speech slurred? ▶ If you see any single one of these symptoms, it’s Time to call 999 The Stroke Association provides vital services to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke, visit their website to learn more https://www.stroke.org.uk/ #strokeawareness #healthandwellness #csr
