The presentation of the International Robin Tavistock Award (Tavistock Trust for Aphasia) to Professor Miranda Rose is a wonderful recognition of the amazing work, results and collaboration that Miranda is achieving in international aphaisa research. Congratulations Miranda!

Professor Miranda Rose, Director of La Trobe’s Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation, has received the Robin Tavistock Award for her contribution to the field of aphasia.    Aphasia is a significant communication disability following stroke and other brain injuries where people can have difficulty speaking, reading, writing, and understanding language and numbers.    “I feel honoured and very humbled to receive this international award. It reflects the hard work and generous collaboration of the many national and international researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience of communication disability that I have been so fortunate to work with,” she says. Professor Rose, who established the Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation in 2019, was lead investigator in the largest comparison trial of aphasia rehabilitation to date, which examined outcomes from constraint-induced and multi-modality aphasia treatments.    She and her team also created the Communication Connect web platform, which supports people living with aphasia to communicate better and live well once they leave rehabilitation programs.    Read more: https://bit.ly/4crDsBm   #LaTrobeAlliedHealthHumanServicesAndSport #LaTrobeUniversity #Aphasia

    Research & Clinical Practice Lead

The International Aphasia Rehabilitation Conference, 1-3 July 2024 at UQ St Lucia, Brisbane brought together a global community of researchers, clinicians, educators, students and people with lived experience of aphasia. I loved the opportunity to meet up with colleagues and friends and make new ones! Thank you to the amazing organising committee and delegates for a truly positive and supportive forum in which to share ideas and exchange knowledge. I’m grateful to the scientific committee for the opportunity to present work on preventing and treating mental health conditions after aphasia. Highlights included showcasing our qualitative study on modified cognitive behavioural therapy and sharing progress on our mixed methods study which offers people with aphasia a choice of a low intensity psychological therapy e.g. behavioural activation, problem solving therapy and relaxation therapy. Together with the Australian Aphasia Rehab Pathway (AARP) team, I’ve contributed to adding best practice statements on managing mental and psychological health within AARP. Professor Miranda Rose presented this fabulous body of work. Stay tuned for the new and updated statements available in August 2024. It was a proud moment to listen to Dr Jas Sekhon present her PhD finding in counselling training for speech language pathologists too 👏Congrats Jas! Finally, congratulations to Emily Eley for presenting her scoping review, also published in Aphasiology. Em investigated the effectiveness of cognitive linguistic interventions for aphasia in the first 90 days after stroke 🙌 proud supervisor moment! Special thanks to A/Prof Sarah Wallace and Prof Dave Copland, co-chairs of IARC. Thank you to Monash Health for supporting me to participate and engage in IARC. Events such as this are vital for advancing our understanding and management of aphasia. I look forward to sharing my learnings with the Monash Health team. Let’s close evidence practice gaps & create opportunities to improve the quality of life for those living with the impacts of aphasia.

We wish to thank Alexandra Salem from Oregon Health & Science University who recently presented our April seminar - Automatically assessing paraphasias in discourse: Breakthroughs and remaining challenges. This talk will cover our recent efforts to automate assessment of paraphasias in discourse using machine learning. We will discuss methods for automatic paraphasia and target identification. We will cover problems we ran into, what we built to address those issues, and what work is still needed. Alexandra Salem works as research staff for the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at the Oregon Health & Science University. Her background is in computer science and her work focuses on automating assessment of language disorders using machine learning and natural language processing. https://lnkd.in/grVYDFYB

CASUAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT ROLES: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST The Aphasia CRE is seeking expressions of interest from Australian speech pathologists interested in joining our team at La Trobe University as casual research assistants (trial assessors and therapists). These are work-from-home opportunities well suited to people working part-time, on extended leave or re-entering the profession. The trial assessors assess people with aphasia and the trial therapists provide a group aphasia intervention, both over Zoom. Watch our March Seminar with Dr Katie Strong on our YouTube Chanel now -https://lnkd.in/gC9AP3G3 Life changes like stroke and aphasia threaten our sense of identity and place people with aphasia at risk for mental health issues. This seminar will explore how clinicians can use stories to support people with aphasia in navigating who they are and will be. Literature linking identity and story will be reviewed. Evidence-based methods for story co-construction will be shared. Dr. Katie Strong leads the Strong Story Lab at Central Michigan University. Her research uses qualitative methods to explore how speech-language pathologists can support people with aphasia rebuild their identity and improve their quality of life by co-constructing stories about who they are and will be.
