I took my 18 y/o brother to Germany when he graduated high school. Touring these castles is something we both wanted to do. It was nice and easy planning, especially for a first time (and probably last, but still) trip to Germany. Perfect because we didn't have a rental car. And if we had a rental car, we would've missed out on a lot of the history of not only the castles, but also the surrounding area. It is a beautiful, scenic drive. Frankly, well worth it. We were able to squeeze in a walk up to Schloss Hohenschawngau as well. Trying to see everything makes it a busy day and we didn't get to spend nearly enough time at Schloss Linderhof. We both thought that if you had the time, you could rent a car and do a several day driving tour of the region, seeing the castles. Oberamagau was also a nice stop and a great place to pick up gifts for people back home.

The take away is, even the 18 y/o boy had a good time.

Castles were great to see. However in April: flowers weren’t put out yet, none of the fountains were going and some were still covered from winter. Tour guide inside Both were informative and answered questions. There is construction going on behind Linderhof castle and on the very front entrance to castle. The trail to the overlook bridge had also been laid recently, but should be open in a few days. Our tour included these 2 castles, but not the Hohenschwangau which is very close by.

This trip to the Castles was pleasant.
Our guide told the backstory of Ludwig and his odd behavior.
Once there, it is reminiscent of Disney World or Land. Crowded, and people stopping at a moments notice for a selfie or family photo. The hike up to the main castle was okay but requires you to keep a sharp eye on the ground for horse droppings. The timed entry is a joke with groups staggered at 5 minute intervals. Then you only get herded in to a few rooms. The artwork is spectacular and well preserved but it all seems a bit rushed. If you wanted to study the figures on the ceiling - not possible as people are right behind or in front of you. Then you are cattle chuted to museum shops loaded with trinkets. Seems so low brow given the beauty and history of the castle.
On the way down, one treat not to be missed is the fresh donuts! Divine!

We loved the Neuschwanstein & Linderhof tour. Our guide truly cared about offering each of us his best. Before we'd stop, he'd share some of his favorite places in town or at the castles. His extra attention to detail made it so much fun! We loved hearing his stories and really appreciated the gelato recommendation.

As good as Neuschwanstein is my wife and I thought Linderhof to be superior. Much of Neu' is great but the walk/horse/bus ride to the castle and its many, many steps makes it a little tedious. Of course Ludwig 2 went waaaay over the top at both places and was deservedly accused of madness and Neu' was the inspiration for Disneyland's Fantasyland BUT ..... Linderhof concentrates every excess of every castle/palace of Europe in one small location. If you must see one, make it Linderhof!
