- Emily HSan Francisco, California9 contributionsA must for Architecture Enthusiasts! The work of Catalan master architect, Lluis Domenech i Montaner, is best represented here. The progressive way in which the entire hospital complex is conceived was extraordinary over 100 years ago and still is today. The architecture design was dedicated to the healing and health of the patient. Make a visit and you will see how the gardens, vistas, and beautiful architecture all come together to promote wellness. Science and spirituality come together in a most compelling way. Beautiful place for a day visit and they have a great gift shop for authentic and unique souvenirs.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten September 7, 2023
- John WDouglas, United Kingdom2,289 contributionsModernist masterpieceDomenech i Muntaner is at least the equal of Gaudi. This is his master piece. And amazing hospital, with each ward block a separate pavilion. Amazing brick, tile, glazed ceramics. Each block connected underground by a white tiled central spine corridor. It’s accessible, with ramps and lifts. Really good half day.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 22, 2024
- Fieldface1 contributionReally cool and really random experienceFor me it was so so random coming here I was visiting a customer who is based at the Health Hub that uses one of the buildings on site. I never even knew this place existed getting through security was a bit of a faf but was able to look around to see the buildings after and they are very nice and cool. A thing that really confused me was at the bottom of the stairs for the private buildings was a sign saying not for visitors. That was not strictly true because I was visiting that building so I got a bit lost because of that. You cant really tell people somthing is not for visitors without them knowing what you are visiting.Visited January 2024Travelled on businessWritten January 30, 2024
- Zoe FSheffield, United Kingdom311 contributionsA Hospital That You Really Should Visit!!What a fantastic place to visit! It is a World Heritage Art Nouveau site and well worth the €16 entry fee! The hospital was still in use in the early 1990’s but the original concept and building work was from the early 1820’s. Each different building had its own “speciality”, one for men, one for women, one for infectious diseases etc. They are being so well restored, it’s awe inspiring in places. There are artefacts from different time periods, including an old X-Ray machine and areas have been set out as to how they would have been utilised. There are also underground tunnels which connect each building that really make you think, how many people have walked through them, how many patients have been transported to a building, how many professionals have had to take a moment. If more hospitals were like this today I don’t think many people would mind having to be there!!Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 1, 2024
- TommoMelbourne, Australia55,732 contributionsHistorical and an architectural masterpieceThis building was formerly a hospital until 2009 and built between 1901 and 1930. The new hospital is built beside this building. The architecure is unique and amazing Art Nouveau) and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It contains 12 pavilions connected through underground galleries. It really is a historical and architectural masterpiece and offers offers workspace to high-profile social organizations such as the WHO, Banco Farmacéutico, Barcelona Health Hub, EMEA, UN-HABITAT and more.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 9, 2024
- Vincent C469 contributionsBeautiful ArchitectureI mean we went after seeing the La Sagrada Familia so it was not as impressive and we did not do the audio guide when the ticket box said not to due to some groups touring today. However, you learn a lot about the history of the place, the hospital care and design at the time. Lots of pavilions which were OK but the architecture was lovely. The main building was gorgeous and if face the main building where you would enter from the back on a sunny day, you can see the reflection of the pavilions behind you and the La Sagrada Familia straight-lined through the windows as well. We spent 1.5hrs here or so and it was worth the admission. We did not buy in advance due to lower season but during higher season; you may want to.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 12, 2024
- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,029 contributionsNice Experience Away From the CrowdsIf you are looking for an experience away from the chaos and crowds of the busy parts of Barcelona, this is your place. Sant Pau is a beautifully restored Barcelona hospital. The various buildings feature stunning architecture and professionally landscaped grounds. You will find Sant Pau to be very quiet and slow paced, which can be a nice respite from busier areas of Barcelona. They offer a high quality gift shop and many shops and restaurants are nearby. NOTE: You can get your ticket here as a combination ticket with the more popular Palau de la Musica Catalan.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2024
- SteviefullKidderminster, United Kingdom1,944 contributionsA Surprisingly Beautiful BuildingHaving visited Barcelona before I thought I'd look a bit further afield for something different and this was on the radar and what a find it was. Built in 1902 and serving as a hospital from 1916 for nearly 100 years, clearly designed to help the patients with their mental health as well with plenty of greenery amongst the buildings. The buildings themselves have beautiful marble interior and are certainly different from any hospital you would have seen. At 16 euro each it wasn't cheap but on a sunny late spring day walking from building to building it was a good way to spend a morning and something a little bit different.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024
- Irina Y59 contributionsNot to be missed attraction in BarcelonaWith so many must-see attractions in Barcelona, this is usually overlooked and it is a huge loss. It is an amazing site. Architecture and history is very interesting and ticket price is not bad in comparison with more famous sites. The only thing negative is that the pamphlet to guide us wan not really clear and it was hard to find thingsVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 19, 2024
