We took our three teenaged boys to the Sierra Mar over the Christmas period, and since we have returned home, they have not stopped talking Spanish. We all really enjoyed our time there. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. The beach was great - it has the natural brown cuban sand and the water was warm and clear. I am a beach lover and only went to the pool once to swim over and haul my husband away from the swim up bar! There is a dive shop at the beach and we all went scuba diving. Good time. For those that wish to just snorkel, there is a reef not too far from shore that you can swim out to. It's beautiful - lots of coral and fish to see. Our only complaint is the rooms. They are very small and simple and need updating, but the view from the rooms make up for them. The maid service was excellent. The place is very laid back and relaxed. If you want white sand beaches, and tons of action, the Sierra Mar is NOT the place to go. It is a little secret tucked away in the Maestra Mountains, and the scenery is like something from the movies. Enjoy your time there! PS. The best surprise for my husband was the fresh squeezed orange juice machine they had set out every morning.

I’ve been travelling Cuba since 1988. This is my 7th trip this year and my 3rd to Sierra Marr since 1990. There have been many changes over the 24 years of its existence due to joint ventures and tropical storms. The latest being hurricane Mathew this fall.

The area is still wonderfully mountainous and full of flora and fauna not prevalent elsewhere. We can attest to the incredible sunsets and sunrises. Mathew brought the beach back in this time instead of decimating most others! It’s still a brown silt more than sand and the snorkeling is murky when the holas roll in as it was in December. Just 2 days of seeing your feet in the water. Still Iswam with a school of bar jacks, saw a lion fish, sergeant majors, squirrels etc. out on the 50 ft. reef in front of the hotel about 200 ft. off shore. Not clear enough for my new underwater camera.

As with so many of the smaller, older resorts not enough money has been forthcoming to keep it updated to the standards which with it was built. The food was beautifully prepared and presented but the hot tables need replacing desperately. It’s very hard on the kitchen staff to constantly fighting an uphill battle. Too much into those overbuilt cayos and not enough for our cozy resorts many of us prefer. Hot food on the grill is excellent. A pasta grill was set up on occasion lunch and dinner prepared to your requirements. There is a snack bar nearby, the a la cartes are delicious, the beach restaurant is open for a full course lunch. Alas the ranchon , just newly renovated , has had a major power meltdown and who knows when it will be funded again. The bathrooms there are functioning so no more hiking back to the room for el banyo!

The ocean view rooms on the 1st floor have been refurbished but they are still working on the garden view ones. The upper level ones above the mezzanine are back in operation to a certain extent. The elevators work but the one on the left growls!!!As with all the older resorts the toilets may still run constantly , the taps are iffy and hot water comes and goes! Be sure to turn the shower heads to the wall instead of flooding the bathroom. Do the tunnels between floors there is till leakage from time to time. However, we all deal with it as does the cheerful staff. Reception says 400 rooms are useable but there were only 190 touristas there going into December. Due to interment of Fidel Castro many people were not guaranteed their room in Santiago and chose to relocate into resorts etc.

The staff is much improved at reception. Mercedes changes rooms if possible, Sandra does the public relations which has its own desk now in the front lobby from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The newer manager was front and centre, ate in the buffet and was attentive to daily requirements. The kitchen staff is terrific filling up the fruit, veggies and dessert areas quickly. We had turkey, roast beef and pork on the carving station. The breakfasts , as always, were the best.

Animation was limited due to the death of Sr. Castro but back Dec. 5th. Love the piano bar in the lobby.

All in all, I had a very pleasant time, was well cared for and met some lovely people. Mes amis francais let me practice my broken French on them with great hilarity!! My fun time on the beach was highlighted by a new friend! I was reading on the beach lounge, book in one hand and a glass of water in the right one. I felt something on my arm and here came my lizzie friend who proceed to have a drink out of my glass and posed for a number of pictures! Son e Sol! Merry Ho! Ho! Carol e.

Well.. I hate to say it but the Rose coloured glasses have come off. We have been going to this resort for nearly 8 years, up to two to three times a years, it is sad to say that the resort is on a downward slide.

Visited the Resort March 3rd to the 10th and was there the first week in January 2016. Out of two planes there was a small bus load, around 20 people went to the resort, when we left they had 16 coming for March Break, last year at this time the resort was busy.

Two of my family members were there for over two months and saw first hand things that they had never seen before along with another friend that was there for six months and has been going there over 15 years.

There is a noticeable decline in the Hotel, especially the food, along with the attitude of the staff. I have to say that the decline is since the New Manager took over the place.

Diving seems to be more lucrative for the staff/Hotel so the catamaran rarely goes out, if you do manage to book a time slot the staff may not show up or are not interested. It only went out for one ride during the week I was there.

Security seems to be non existent and/or are wearing blinders, locals come in from the beach, set up behind the bar and are provided with drinks and food while security turns a blind eye. Many times we witnessed what looked like friends of management come in to the resort not wearing wrist bands and spending the evening drinking and eating. Many a night I saw a kitchen employee sitting at the lobby bar enjoying a beer while watching TV. If they did an inventory of booze/food consumed it would not add up for the amount of Tourists at the resort.

Thefts are rampant, a couple of rooms were broken into via the patio doors while I was there. One guest walked in on the thief entering through the patio door, they can break in even if you lock the door, they just need to jiggle the doors and the lock will open so don’t forget to ask the MANAGER to provide you with the Sticks you need for your room.

The Food is not as good as before, 3 to 4 trays of rice every day, there is no Tonic or Aqua Con gas, no Pastries in the morning, no Croissants. Not many premium brands to be found at the Havana bar. There is limited fresh fruit, never saw a Shrimp the whole time, no potatoes at night. If you are late for Breakfast there will be no Bread left as they do not restock it. The quality and variety of food is sad to say the least, it was unbelievable what they can do with Hot Dogs. The Beach Rachon ran out of Hot dogs, burgers most days by 12:30 daily.

The staff is still great but a lot of long timers are starting to look elsewhere. I give credit to our maid who took great care of us, the awesome waitresses and waiters that tried to accommodate us as much as they could.

We do love the staff and the area but may have to look elsewhere moving forward.. the love affair may be over for us and many of the other tourists we talk to.

Response from Emir E, Director de Relaciones con Clientes at Hotel Brisas Sierra Mar
Responded May 16, 2016
Our guests’ opinions are carefully read and every consideration is looked after. Unfortunately, Management, Public Relations or Front Desk were not addressed to express any kind of dissatisfaction about the hotel and its services; otherwise, we would have done everything possible to clarify any concern or solve any situation. All our returning guests are aware that the day pass service does not include having access to the rooms’ area. The rules are carefully explained upon guests’ arrival. Besides, they also know that a kind treatment to the staff and guests is a policy of our resort. In the case of the elevator, it is true that it was working unsteadily due to a technical problem caused by humidity on the electrical systems; heavy rains caused power failures outside of the resort that affected some electrical devices of the elevator. All of our guests were aware of that situation and we also asked for apologizes for the inconveniences. Regarding the rooms’ balcony doors, some locks have worn out and most of them were changed. Before changing the locks, wooden bars were especially designed to provide better security and a pleasant stay for our guests. Management did appreciate the suggestion of the wooden bars that some of our returning visitors recommended to us after having this experience in some other countries they have visited. Concerning to the comments about food, there are two À la Carte restaurants that offer national and international dishes highly demanded for our guests. Also the beach grill restaurant is available everyday with lunch and snacks. Ecological restaurant at the beach area was available for lunch and dinner with nice music included. The buffet has a different menu everyday according to Brisas brand standard designed for two weeks. We checked our requisitions during that period and we could verify that some products were not available at the buffet as well as at the bars, for example: fruit and vegetable variety was limited, there were not seafood, tonic and sparkling water, piña colada, brandy, etc. The most important attributes of Brisas Sierra Mar Hotel is the beauty of the location as well as the kindness, professionalism and human values of its Management and staff. The service that is provided by our employees makes our resort an exceptional spot in the region. Most of them have been working here since day one or for more than 15 years. Recently Management and staff built the new park “sunset”, a patio for the artists, a new snack bar, Havana Club bar and some renovations were done at the Ecological restaurant, etc. Our guests value these improvements. During all these years Hotel Management have always checked that the employees observe the rules established. Our beach is 1 km long and it is protected 24 hours for the hotel security department. Guests offer drinks and food to the locals that stay in Playa Blanca, a beach that is close to ours, although they are informed in the briefing that it is not allowed as well as they do not have access to our hotel unless they pay for the services. Maybe someone confused some of the locals with clients staying in our resort. We do appreciate all our guests comments and suggestions especially when their main goal is to improve our services in terms of fulfilling customers holidays expectations and to be much better hosts to the clients.

This was our 5th trip to Cuba, never complained before.

The food is good altough the buffet is very small. Was sick the last day despite taking all precautions.

The beach is small. You will need water shoes, there are a lot of rock and weeds and we saw sea urchins. There is nowhere to walk along the beach but plenty of chairs. Lots on insect bites covered our arms and shoulders, noticed other guests were the same.

The room was not clean, dirty pillow, insects and lizard in the room. There is no fridge in the room. We asked for a bottle of water and were told to go buy one in the store. You also have to pay for the safe.

They stole our face towel from our room on the second last day. They wouldn't let us check out. We asked to speak to a manager and were basically called a liar. We had lost the towel according to them and guests are responsible for room content they said. We were made to understand that they would not let us leave if we didn't pay. We payed the 5CUC as we had no choice. This is a lot ess than what we had given in tips. I understand crime happens but no amunt of vigilance can protect you from this crime to what amounts to extortation by management. We offererd to let them look in our bags but they refused and mocked us. We also met another tourist who told us that they had their camera stolen by security gurads. A staff member told us that theft was common at this hotel. We will never return for this reason, the humilation that we had to endure ruined our vacation.

I have to say that the views were breathtaking, and the weather was sunny and warm, everyday! Umberto the security guard went above and beyond for us during our stay. He caught us fresh lobster, and the chef cooked it up! WOW it was the best lobster that I have ever had in my entire life. The staff worked very hard, and I have to say that I really wish I could have done more for the exceptional service that was provided! **** Umberto**** security deserves to be recognized that is for sure. Incredible gentleman, that needs more English lessons!!
I would like to see people bringing cutlery to give to the staff, as they are in need of forks etc. This may sound like a weird request, but it is something that they don't have. Plates and Forks. I am sure if you were to bring this for Umberto, he would thank you by catching you fresh lobster for the chef to cook up for you. Anything you can do to help. I know that a lot of people give shampoo and nail polish. I went to the village, and they have a collection of access in those things. Its forks, plates, baby clothes, and running shoes, bikes, that they really want. The maids gets most tips, so its nice to spread it out to the security, etc. Also, special thanks for Annie anything for taking us to Playa Blanca. " White Beach" it was one of my fondest memories. I was so tearful when I left. I just felt so grateful to be Canadian, seeing the struggles that they have they have a very positive attitude. Please if possible bring my friend Umberto cutlery, clothes, and toys for his little baby girl. I am positive that he would catch you fresh lobster from the ocean. Enjoy your vacation, and polish up on your Spanish!

We stayed at Los Galeones from March 9-15, 2005 and, even though we had to get there via Toronto from our home in Winnipeg it was worth the extra effort and expense. Brisas Los Galeones is a great place for anyone wanting a quiet getaway without the crowds, the noise and the line-ups at the bigger Cuban resorts. With only 25-26 guests (when we were there) you get to know everyone in a very short period of time. There was first rate entertainment at almost every evening meal but not much in the way of late night entertainment - except the revelry that the guests produce! By the end of the week you are pretty much friends with everyone so the party atmosphere is easily generated. This is not the place of late nights and loud discos. It is a place of laughter, warmth and great fun. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. The food, although simple, is beautifully prepared and piping hot. It is really healthy food with lots of cooked vegetables and fresh fruit. We had an ocean view room (most rooms have a great view) and it was wonderful to step out on the balcony every morning to take in the breath-taking scenery or to be lulled to sleep at night listening to the surf of the ocean far below. Of course, the price you pay for the great view is a challenging walk up from the beach or the local town. But I'm 53 and in pretty good shape so, frankly, I enjoyed the exercise. There is a twice-a-day free shuttle back and forth to Sierra Mar. It's 20 minutes on awful road but worth it if you want a change of scenery. The food at the Sierra Mar buffet is pretty good. We went to Sierra Mar three times for scuba. There's a good dive shop right at Sierra Mar and it costs about 30 convertible pesos per person. The equipment is pretty good. One of our dives was to an old wreck. If snorkelling is your thing you may as well stay at Los Galeones. It's great. The mud bath tour is probably worth the $15 per person. We didn't go on any of the other tours. Be warned - don't run out of cash. Los Galeones and Sierra Mar are a long way from Santiago de Cuba which is the only place where you can get cash on your credit card and ONLY if you present your Passport. In a pinch you can use cedit cards for tours or scuba but only if you push the issue. They really prefer cash. Take Canadian dollars and get it changed into convertible pesos. Getting money changed is not a problem, it's just hard to get more if you run out. On departure some shops in the airport will take Canadian currency but not loonies or twoonies. Los Galeones is the kind of place that you want to return to year after year. It has an atmosphere that is really captivating and contagious! I'm not surprised they have so much repeat business. I know this much - we'll be back!

My husband and I were there Jan 2003. Very clean resort,the chambermaids performing swan lake with the bed linens and towels and shower curtain( you have to see this to believe it!)It was our first time to ever go to an all inclusive -so we may not be the best experts on these things. The water is filtered so no worries there. ROOM:They didnt supply any mini shampoos just soap, so that was a bummer that we had to go and buy some-kinda wierd for a resort eh?. The animation staff is lively and fun, aerobic classes, spanish class with Lesbia(I kid you not), volleyball, the cabaret shows are more risque(in costumes) than to pay $50 USD to go see the big Tropicana show.You can go walking outside and visit some of the hamlets nearby- friendly people they wont bother you.
The beach- is nice, yes its a bit seaweedish but walk a few more metres and its clear. Yes the sandflies and mosquitos will snack so bring on the Deep Woods and OFF. But hey, there is a beach bar so bring on the daquiris... But if you look around there is a forest so of course, there are mosquitos (duh!) you can go walking along the beach past the resort border. and there is a cemetary to visit.
The only thing is a small group of "professional "beggars you have to get past.But the walking is fab along that endless stretch of beach! They are ok, it may just seem intimidating the first time. But you have to laugh a bit because 2 of them have empty backpacks ready and waiting for whatever goodies you might have...
there are sea kayaks, pedalos and a hobie cat (a staff will sail it for you)and bikes for free. They are starting to work on a mini organic garden concept -very pretty. They also raise some chickens, goats, pigs. What really surprised us was finding out that there is a 30(!) percent repeat rate of guests. The staff seemed to welcome people as family almost. Quite something to see.
FOOD:The buffet restaurant was pretty good overall. Maybe it could have been a bit more creative but hey, nothing bloody or raw! A fairly euro type of food and service. Breakfast, the germans would haul off chunks of cheese, coldcuts and coleslaw (they're german -what do you expect) the french would nibble on the croissants (not so good) and mini pastries and cappucino or espresso. Btw, the capp and espresso are to die for and real milk (someone told us some resorts have powdered milk.)Us cdns would dive for the omelets, pancakes, bacon, fresh fruit juices-guava, mango etc. Lunch- rice, pastas, diff potatoes, battered fish, gazpacho, paella(really good) ,roast meat of the day, cuban bread, basic salad, supper simliar but things would be changed i.e octopus. Desserts were very euro: flan, creme caramel, delicate biscuits, rice pudding, mini pastries, profiteroles, milles feuilles, jello /pudding for the kids and fruit. The 2 a la cartes good (1 cuban,1 euro ).
Snack bars: basic hotdogs, hamburgers, plantain chips and mackeral fish! Those bar girls rock! They can shake those cocktails till the rooster crows(and boy does it ever crow!)There is also the guy wacking green coconuts down with a machete to make rum punch drinks at 4pm. The pool wasnt deep its more for floating with a drink in hand. So overall -not really anything to complain about-just those tiny little things. So go there!

With the Sierra Maestra mountains on all sides straddling the Caribbean Sea, the views are spectacular. Especially given that this is where it all began. Can just imagine what it must have been with Fidel, Che, Camillo and their brethren's planning to take back their nation.
The resort is in a beautiful location with Oceanview rooms all around however, given the age of the resort, it is time for some upgrades. That being said, the people at the resort are just wonderful (as has been our experience at every resort/town/city we've visited in Cuba). It is all about the people and the principles they live by. The entertainment was top quality. We went early June and the resort was practically empty (we were told it was low season). As well, most tourists prefer to go the usual touristy places like Varadero, Cayo Coco, Holguin, etc. Which was fine with us because we practically had the entire resort to ourselves.
The city of Santiago du Cuba is absolutely charming and is a must visit. We visited the city with its grand cathedral, Moncada Barracks, graveyard where Jose Marti is buried, plus several other points of interest.
Beautiful place, lovely resort and absolutely wonderful people. Can't wait to go back.

Stayed at Brisas Sierra Mar during the last week of September, third visit since 2009.
The Good
The staff and locals are wonderful people: friendly, helpful, kind and warm. The hotel staff works hard to make the visitor's stay a pleasure. The hotel currently employs artists for local improvements, such as sculptures and hand-painted embellishments. It was a joy to meet those artists, to admire their work and to see local talent being promoted. It was an even greater joy to meet some employees again who have become personal friends over the years.
The flight on Cubana was smooth, comfortable and punctual, passport control and customs in Santiago were polite and efficient, the hotel room bracelets were handed out at the airport by the Hola Sun representatives and the ride to the hotel (1 hour and 10 mins.) on a clean and comfortable bus was relaxing and pleasant. The road from Santiago to Chivirico has been rebuilt beautifully and there is no longer a single trace of evidence of its past rather adventurous if not dangerous condition.
Upon arrival at the hotel, there was a short and delightful welcome ceremony, the dinner buffet was still open and was a pleasant surprise with pretty displays and a nice variety of food and dishes.
The room was spotless, and - unlike in previous years - the sliding closet doors did NOT come out of the railings and the headboards did NOT come off the drawers. The balcony door closed well, but could not be locked. The air conditioning worked efficiently and flawlessly throughout the entire stay at the hotel, and the hot-water supply was never disrupted.
The beach has been supplemented with several new palapas, there are new comfortable and nice-looking beach lounge chairs. The beach was clean and quiet, no noseeums, only a few isolated mosquitoes.
A very special and appreciative thank-you goes to the Hola Sun representative Pedro: Pedro is the most efficient and helpful travel representative one could wish for! Thumbs up for a big promotion - he deserves the recognition, and I congratulate everyone who will have the privilege to deal with him!

The Not-So-Good
Throughout the entire week, the elevators did not work due an electrical failure after a major rainfall. The stairs were challenging during the prevailing hot weather conditions, the staircases are poorly lit at night and become slippery when wet. The challenges presented by the staircases prevented me from visiting the beach as often as I would have liked to.
The water seepages from the ceilings in the room hallways persist as they did during previous visits, warning cones on the floor mark the most treacherous spots. The hallways are poorly lit and the slippery floors may present a problem to visitors with physical challenges such as poor eyesight, poor balance or poor surefootedness.
The toilet in my room was useless for 98% of the time during my stay, since the toilet tank failed to refill with water and the toilet could not be flushed. The problem was reported to the front desk, the management representative promised an immediate repair. This "immediate repair" remained a promise: the toilet was NOT fixed during the full period of my stay. Most of the time, I saved my "business" for the toilet behind the lobby - no problems there, but a rather awkward approach for a hotel guest to deal with nature's calls!
On the day of departure, a large amount of water came through the ceiling in the room entrance area and created a significant puddle on the tiled floor. For once, I was glad that this was my last day at the hotel, and this was a first for me: I always had wanted to stay a little longer and had not been ready for the trip home.
Another first for me in 15 years of visiting Cuba was being harassed by an employee who appears to be working in the laundry department: The man insisted on me disclosing my room number to him while he fumbled his private parts through his pants. I was saddened by this unprovoked disrespectfulness and reported the man to security. I also insisted that the man must NOT lose his much-needed job over this incident, but should certainly be instructed that his behaviour is unacceptable.
The problem of old, ugly and fat men parading young Cuban girls has existed at this hotel (and at many, many other Cuban hotels!) for many years. Various related discussions on my part with hotel management and locals revealed that there is very little that can be done to stop this practice. I respectfully disagree: The Cuban laws are clear with respect to prostitution and there is no restriction for the local authorities to enforce the law. In addition, the men involved may wish to seek professional help for their low self-esteem and paedophilic tendencies rather than seeking selfish sexual gratification by exploiting girls who are young enough to be their granddaughters.
Summary
It saddens me to see this once beautiful hotel not meeting the challenges of management, time and climate and falling increasingly more into disrepair. It saddens me even more to realize that I may not see my friends there again. I will continue to read the traveler reports about Sierra Mar, and if no major overhaul of the hotel is reported by independent sources, I must chose not to return: a working toilet in a hotel room is not an extravagant request, it's a basic amenity; harassment by a staff member is not acceptable; the failing elevators may be just an inconvenience, but at my age (64), I will think twice before braving the staircase challenge again; the aging plumbing system and even more though the shaky electrical system are a source for concern. All this hurts - I love this place and its people, I love this part of the country, and I hope that this latest experience there can be remedied and does not mean a final good-bye!

Response from Emir E, Director de Relaciones con Clientes at Hotel Brisas Sierra Mar
Responded Oct 15, 2015
Brisas Sierra Mar Management and Staff appreciate your comments regarding our resort. Our guests’ opinions are carefully read and every consideration is looked after. They are an opportunity to improve our services since our main purpose is customers’ satisfaction. During your stay our main elevators were not working due to an electrical failure caused by a major rainfall. New pieces and parts are being bought to make it work. Our hotel has being built in form of terraces situated among mountains. When there are heavy rains they cause water liking in the rooms hallways. Cubanacan Holding Company is aware of this situation and it is part of a renovation project. Regarding the incident you mentioned, it is under an investigation process and an answer will be provided as soon as we have the results. It is true that some couples staying in hotels in Cuba have a difference regarding their ages. In order to prevent any kind of incident, our hotel checks our guests’ personal documents to guarantee that we are welcoming real adults that is why we have set an age of 21 years old for admission. Also their records are checked in our system. Besides, hotel rules are carefully explained to all our guests like inappropriate behaviors (coarse language, sexual behavior, etc.), are not permissible in the public areas, as well as, our resort is a place for families and children and any guest that breaks hotel’s rules will be immediately expelled from the resort and will not be welcomed anymore. In addition to that all the staff is on the alert of any irregularities regarding this kind of behaviour and they must report to Security Department, Management and Guest Service. We do not deny that this kind of attitude exists for many years all over the world; but also, love does not make distinction against races, sex and ages. We do apologize for the inconveniences you have had during your stay. It will be a pleasure to welcome you in the near future. Best Regards.

Just returned from a week at this resort. Great trip! I give the Brisas Sierra Mar 5+ points for a 3.5 star resort. Highly recommend it for people looking for happy, clean place to stay at a low price and those who won't complain about every little thing. Being at the south end of the island and on the Caribbean side, the water is really warm and temp is hot and sunny. Great snorkeling right off shore.

1) the staff and other vacationers, at least 50% of the people staying there were repeats, some 10 + years! Moma has being going to the resort had at least 7 years for 6 months at a time;
2) weather was sunny and hot, even on overcast days;
3) clean (my #1 requirement);
4) food - five places to eat including the Buffett and 24 hour snack bar. A bit repetitive at times but great variety;
5) music - live music every evening in the lobby bar, live band every day at 4:00 at the pool bar; live bands in the a la cart restaurants, evenings shows and sod I'll events
6) 60 minutes from airport on a smooth paved road;
7) Maintenance - it is a bit worn but constant work being done to improve the area
8) value - worth every bit of the low cost, can't go wrong

The main dining room often (not every night) sets out tables outside for the evening meal. About an hour or two before dinner hour you will see them setting up. Ask the attendant to save you a table (a tip is nice to offer) and he'll put out a name tag on a table for you. It's very pleasant taking your meal on this patio.
