My husband and I and our 2 kids (age 9 and 5) stayed at this resort during the last week of January. Overall we were really impressed with what the hotel had to offer for the price that we paid.

We flew with Sunwing - which was excellent, as always. (Half an hour early both ways!!) The Sunwing brochure rates this hotel as a GOLD property which, in our travel experience, may be a bit misleading. This property is a 3.5 star property - so be aware of that before booking. With a little love and maintanance, however, this property could easily be resored to GOLD status. A coat of paint would do wonders to spruce this place up.

The rooms are TINY and, as a family of 4, we were pretty much all on top of each other all week. The weather was absolutely perfect for our entire stay, so we didn't spend much time in the room anyway and we adjusted to the close quarters. An added bonus was that even though we booked a standard room, we got a room with a spectacular ocean view. The rooms were very clean but the lack of hot water was a negative for me. I only had one semi-warm shower all week. The rest were pretty much frigid.

The activities staff did a great job and had daily scheduled activities (water aerobics, dance lessons, spanish lessons, pool volley ball etc.) and they tried to get everyone up off their beach chairs and participate. They have a daily walking tour at 8am which was also cool. They had a hike up a mountain, a bird watching tour, a trip to a waterfall and more. Also, one afternoon, they had a bus come in to the hotel and pick up some guests to take them to a local baseball diamond for a game of baseball against the local teams. My hubby didn't hear about this until it was too late and was disappointed. If you play baseball, bring your glove and play ball!. (although they did have gloves for those who wanted to play)

The nightly shows were pretty repetitive (seen one, seen em all) with the exception of the unique "water ballet" show one night at the main pool. That one is worth checking out. The entertainment staff tried hard, and the shows were decent. The musical entertainment, however, was AMAZING! They had a fabulous piano bar in the lobby every evening, which was quite nice, and they had other bands and singers that would roam around the property during the day and evening and perform at the various bars and restaurants. The 4 man acapella singing group was particularly impressive.

The drink selection at the bars was pretty good (great beer too - 2 different kinds!). There were also a lot of dining choices (4 a-la carte restaurants, the main buffet and 2 snack bars). The a la cartes weren't overly impressive (nothing special, really) , but the ecological restaurant is a must-do! (reserve your a la cartes as SOON as you arrive!) All in all the food was all very tasty and plentiful, which I have heard is not the norm in Cuba.

The beach was actually quite beautiful, contrary to what I have read in some reviews. Yes, it is dark sand - not very "Cuba" like, but it is a lovely long stretch of beach and the water was like glass pretty much every day. Barely a ripple! There are a variety of water activities - snorkelling, paddle boats, kayaks etc, with equipment available at the dive shop. They have no child size life jackets, so bring your own. We took a paddle boat out to the reef (about 200 metres or so off shore) and snorkelled. It was not the best snorkelling we have ever seen, but it was really beautiful. If you try to snorkel close to the shore, you won't see much. Do bring water shoes though....

All in all, for the price we paid ($1600 incl taxes for a family of 4) it was a fabulous vacation. Perfect weather - breath taking scenery and a great atmosphere for relaxation. I'd go back again in a heartbeat!

The resort is nothing more than a front for human trafficking in prostitution. It goes unchecked by what they may call "security". I was completely and utterly disgusted by the conduct of the locals in offering themselves and their companions up for sexual services, the number of visitors engaging in the conduct and supporting human sexual trafficking.

Female members of our group were uncomfortable being on their own and two of them were boldly propositioned to hire the services of a prostitute.

The resort is described as a 60 km drive from the airport. This is true, but what is not said is the road has been washed out for four years and the drive took close to two hours. If you are at the resort and require emergency medical services, good luck because it will take them the same time to arrive from Santiago de Cuba.

The resort sits on wonderful grounds and has so much potential, but it appears to be in total neglect. The pool had a slimy bathtub ring around it that could be easily wiped away if the resort had the ambition to do so. In the seven days I was there, only once did I seen the pool being cleaned, but chemicals were added every night.

In my room it was musty and smelly. It was not until my last night there I finally figured out the midnight itching was bedbugs. My phone only worked when I held the plug in place.

The food was below Cuban standards.

On the weekends locals are allowed to purchase a day pass. The Saturday we were there the place was over run (200 plus day passes were sold) to the point a mob mentality took over and the registered guests were physically blocked from bars and food services. The locals gained control of the main dining area and I could see them taking bags of food out from the buffet. There were absolutely no controls in place. The locals cursed the guests and scolded them for not knowing Spanish.

By day four we took refuge down by the beach, which is a good beach.

I will say each and every staff member I dealt with was pleasant, courteous and appreciative.

You have been warned!

We have been to Sierra Mar about ten times over the past many years. Everyone who works at the resort are the most friendly people. The food is not as good as it used to be. In fact, it was quite disappointing. Wilzer, the hotel manager is doing a great job in making the hotel look better and its good to see that our room was freshly painted and there are lots of improvements going on with a new patio being erected near the dining room. I noticed a nice new fountain had also been erected and the beach has improved quite a lot and there are several toiletries now in the room, such as shampoo, etc., which were never available in past years. The swimming pool was good, but it will need repairs soon, as the lining needs to be replaced and I wonder how long before they can afford to do that. I think my biggest complaint perhaps was the pillows on the bed!!!! I really think they have been used for the past 15 years and they are absolutely flat. I folded up a blanket and used it as a pillow each night. I think this is probably the last time we visit. Its time for us to visit other places.

I could start this off saying how the flight delays were terrible etc, but hey, it happens! AND I am writing about the hotel, not the flight. :D

Overall, it was a decent trip. We were in the Caribbean, wasn't doing dishes or cooking, and enjoying the best rum!
I'll outline the goods and bads listed below:

Check-in
Check-in was smooth and fast. The Hotel Sunwing rep was waiting at the airport for us and checked us in the bus on the way to the hotel. We arrived the hotel around midnight, and there were rum punch for us as well as bellboys who brought us to our rooms. Probably was one of the fastest check-ins we`ve had!

Rooms
The rooms were very dated, but comfortable and clean. We had a 2 very nice rooms. It was my boyfriend`s parents anniversary and I let the hotel know in advance and they arranged a fruit plate and champagne to be waiting in their room. We booked ocean view rooms and they were ocean view! If you didn`t already know the rooms are built down the hill, so all amenities are basically on the top of the rooms. There are a number of stairs, so if you are on the first floor, there is a big climb to get to the main amenities. We were on the 3rd floor so it wasn`t too bad (rooms 328/329). We paid for the ocean view rooms, and I brought screen to keep the door open at night and hear the ocean, but it didn`t work. The A/C was loud, but it was still hard to hear. Most rooms it seemed as though they would have some sort of ocean view, if not direct.
So, here I will state the first downfall... Even though the only food we kept in the room was in sealed containers and the rooms were cleaned everyday, I did find a cockroach in the room (on the shower curtain) on the 2nd day. I was definitely creeped out, however I also understand that cockroaches do live in these climates and there is not a ton you can do about it. There were no other bugs in the room, and my boyfriend's parents did not have any. At this point, maybe I was a bit paranoid, so kept a keen eye. I saw 4 others. 2 out during the night around the resort and a dead one, and then another in the room on our 2nd from last night. Again, I was very creeped out, but it does happen, and you are going to a warm climate.

Pool
The pool was fabulous! As was the pool bar. We spent most of our time at the pool. The 2 downfalls are that it should be skimmed out daily. As well there were an excess of chairs. However, we were at the start of the season, and there were maybe 50 people at the resort. Therefore, there were always seats for us. There were the people who put their towels on the chairs and only spent about 1 hour at the pool all day. Come busy season the pool area will be crowded.

Food
Welcome to Cuba! Be warned the food is bland and not what you are used to. Many people bring hot sauce and spices. However, they do to keep the food good and varied.

The breakfast buffet was 7:30-10:30am
The breakfast had a range of cereal, yogurt to boiled eggs, pancakes and french toast to fried potatoes and bacon. As most resorts there was also the egg station where a cook makes eggs to order.
There was a continental breakfast at 6:30am in the lobby bar. We were never up that early, so don't know what it was like.

Lunch buffet was 12:30-2:30pm
Lunch buffet was a smaller version of dinner, but good.

The Rancheron Resteraunt was 12-4pm
This was downstairs near the beach. Your options were ham & cheese pizza (I asked them to add pineapple to mine :D )
Hamburgers, hotdogs and french fries. They were all very good.

Dinner buffet was 7-9:30pm
Dinner was good and usually a variety of meats available, as well as 2 kinds of rice and 2 kinds of pasta (alfredo and tomato), many veggie dishes, deli table (meats and cheeses) and a dessert table. There was usually a grill where we even got stuffed turkey one night.

Cafeteria 4:00-1:00am
This was beside the pool bar. It also served hamburgers, hotdogs, frenchfries and grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Again, all very good!

Overall, I found the food here to be a bit better than most places we have been in Cuba. The best by far was the breakfast fried pork patties. The were breaded and fried and excellent! Also the soup. The cooks made fabulous soup! It rivaled my grandmothers, and that is saying something!!!
There was a pig roast on wednesday, but were on the scooter trip and when we got back we were all quite filled up from the farmers spread.

We ate at La Bodeguita (Cuban) al-la-carte. It was great!!!
As well La Mariposa (Italian) al-la-carte. It wasn't great the meat was a bit overcooked.

Excursions
We did the trip to Bacardi Island. It was 45 pesos and well worth it. It consisted of a boat ride to the island in which you got to fish on the way there (father in law caught a small tuna). We then arrived on the island, were able to snorkel around for an hour of so. Also it included a seafood lunch. Fish, shrimp and lobster (HUGE!!!!!) It was great. Then we were able to fish on the way back.
10am-3pm

We also did the scooter trip. This was 25 pesos. Again, well worth it.
We took scooters to a local school, a local farm where they had an arrangement of juice, fruit and snacks for us to try. They also made fresh ground and hand brewed coffee for us! Then continued to a bat cave and a red sand beach. We liked this because you got to see some of how the locals lived, and some nice tourist sites. But it also wasn't a long trip so we had alot of the day left. The road though is HORRIBLE! Made it a bit bumpy, but I guess that was part of the fun.
10:30-12:30

Service
Great service all around. The waitresses Gladis and Sonia were excellent. As was the pool bartender Adonis.

Additional
There were some "no-see-um" bugs at night that liked me, but left others alone. A few mosquitos, but not bad. I had afterbite, so that helped.

Santiago area is beautiful. It really is a wonderful part of the country. There are fabulous mountains, so the scenery is incredible. The people are great. Because it is in the mountains, there is a long road, and saying it is not in good shape is an understatement! Potholes... HA! More like craters. Much of the paved part is washed out to sand road, but there literally were areas of the path where the road was washed out. The area is poor, beautiful. Therefore, we brought a full bag of give away clothes. Good news, the road is getting worked on. Things that are needed are quality clothes, school type supplies and daily items such as toothpaste, feminine products and shoes. Staff was very thankful.
Our bus guide was great and very informative.

We had a good vacation, and thought I might concider going back to this resort if the price was cheap enough, there were other resorts that I would probably go to before this one. Not because of anything specific on the hotel's part, they did everything they could to make our stay great, but due to the room concerns and it being a bit smaller than our liking. However my boyfriends parents will definitely be back.

We have always stayed at 4 1/2 or 5 star resorts but we have been curious to go to a 3 star resort because sometimes they get really good reviews. So we decided to try one. Brisas Sierra Mar got quite good reviews so it seemed like a good choice. It was. We loved the grounds - they are mature and quite lovely. We had an ocean view room and enjoyed some spectacular sunsets. The food compared with some 4 or even 5 star resorts we've been to. The buffet selection was quite good and the a la cartes were also very good. We loved the lunch shack near the beach which had a shaded patio with gorgeous trees and cool breezes. Most days the lunch shack had a Cuban band playing. We found the shade around the pool was lacking. The beach is more like a Canadian beach than the powder white sand beaches of the north shore but we knew that it would be like that so we were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and helpful and the front desk staff were the best we've ever encountered. Agreed that some parts of the resort need some fixup or renovation but it did not affect our enjoyment whatsoever. We got some good deals on coffee and rum in the resort store which were the same prices as the duty free at the airport. All in all we had a great time and would definitely go back.

unfortunately it's true. you need sand flea protection. I use my own olive oil a, basil and skin so soft homemade mixture that works for me. the pervs and pros are there but mostly low key. the food is fine. the mountains and rain forest are incredible. the elevators may not be working and it could be a long hike to the beach and back up to the reception area. it's brown sand and silt rather than the coral sand elsewhere. just track the reviews and make your own judgment call. carol e.

the beach is extremely accessible from the lower section. located just behind the ranchon. the beach is also very safe as there is a reef about a hundred yards out which makes it safe and shallow. Also there is a lifeguard available all day and is very attentive so say hi to him and make sure he knows you're there and he will look I feel great. and Chino at the Tiki Bar on the beach is great as well

if there's the slightest wave snorkeling from the beach is silty. there's a lovely 50 ft. reef right in front of the hotel within walking distance in the water but if visibility is poor hard to see anything. further off with the paddle boats is good and hola has a dive boat snorkeling tour included if the boat is fixed. the beach is more brown silt than sand. and bring your own equipment plus water shoes.
